Truck tonnage may have increased 2.9% year-over-year in August, but the collapse in month-over-month levels is much more illuminating.

Tonnage fell by 2.7% from July to August, according to the American Trucking Association.

That's the biggest month over month fall since March 2009.

The chief economist at the ATA, Bob Costelo, says this slowdown was expected and that it should be slowing further with the economy for the remainder of the year.

From the American Trucking Association:

"...this slowdown was expected....."

Well, that's unexpected and likely unprecedented.

One of my best former friends - he voted for Obama - is an executive with a trucking company. He is getting killed right now financially, I have heard from several people. But he is still supporting BHO - a white, protestant, 54 year old otherwise southern gentleman - it makes me sick.

Just a reminder: When trucks don’t roll you don’t eat.

There could easily be seasonality that hasn’t been taken out.

Uh, never mind, though there does appear to be a fall off in the Late summer/early Fall in the previous years.

This is a really good indicator of the economy. Anyone at a factory door can tell how the local economy is doing by how full the peddle route truck is when it shows up at the door to pick up your shipment.

A lot of independent owner/operators farm on the side (or vice versa). They get scarce come harvest time.

I used to count on 48' flatbeds to move my freight, and this happened every Fall for as long as I can remember.

Here in Australia there's a difference ... more trucks on the road.

The Australian Road-Trains are the longest trucks in the world. They have 3 or more trailers and are 53 metres long, ( 174 feet ) hauling 115 metric tons (253,531 pounds).A super Road-Train has 7 trailers and hauls 190 metric tons.

You see something like this you want to head to the roadside!!!

It’s those diesel trains that can go 400 miles on a gallon of gas.

I work for a company that has about 250 trucks and 7 terminals in the west. We’ve had our ups and downs, but have generally been busy. One of our biggest problems is finding experienced and qualified drivers. We get lot’s of apps, but few who look like anything we’d hire. We generally haul specialized freight and haz-mat. BTW, I’m not a truck driver.

How do they keep the rear cars from traveling into the other lane?

Reason for road trains is there is no rail lines to outback towns ...

Speed - plus they can brake individual trailers so if one gets a bit frisky they can steady the whole train by ‘dancing’ the brakes ...had a ride in one .... awesome!!!! Real Road Warrior rigs ....

We went to order some carpet squares about four months ago. It had to be a certain color and type. The sales guy was willing to make a good deal on this but then it came to the delivery time. We figured it was local...but it wasn’t. It was to come from a warehouse in Texas. These two pallets sat on the waiting dock for six weeks, until their truck was completely full and then he left for Virginia. Two years ago...the truck would have left half-empty.
