This man stood up to thugs operating with the imprimatur of the State, and he did it for all of us. We are all indebted to him.
It is a shame he had to go through all of this. I hope he got a nice settlement, but that is not enough. The cops involved should be charged with kidnapping and should do prison time. Yes, I know, it will never happen, but I can dream, can't I?
Oh, and do not try this at home, without significant preparation both legal and mental, would be my advice.
Pingarooni. This is a good one.
Native San Diegan here. I love this true story!
I know both restaurants and can visualize everything!
So, was he really wearing a kilt or not?
Maybe the cops got a little over-excited.
Wonderful true story! We have to know our rights.

I just read all the responses on the calguns thread, and Sam replies to the question.
Yes, he was wearing a Utilikilt. It’s mostly a West Coast thing, you probably wouldn’t understand. I know I don’t. We went by their main store in Seattle, on Pioneer Square, a couple years ago during a double decker bus tour of the city, and saw some guys milling around wearing them.
Then again, this guy probably has big brass balls the size of baseballs, and needs the kilt since pants don’t work for him!
In any case, here’s a link to the one he says he was wearing:

Bttt.
Thanks, I had seen reference to that, but hadn’t found it yet.
So the payout was probably this plus attorney’s fees, which I’m sure were substantial, a like number or more.
Survival Kilt?
I think I’ll pass on that one.
Sadly the slip into JBT is all too often automatic for many LEO. The “us” vs. “them” and respect my authority attitudes are a very dangerous path.
When things turn really bad LEO’s are going to need law-abiding gun owners but sadly to few of them see that.
We do not encourage Unloaded Open Carrying of firearms in urban areas at this time, said Gene Hoffman, Chairman of The Calguns Foundation. But we believe the civil rights of gun owners must be defended to the utmost.
I wonder if they still meet there?
I hope our cops are more up on the law now than they were then.
Very interesting especially because I can see Belmont Park as I type this.
Yes, our cops know the law now, LINK in post #6, and incidentally, The Calguns Foundation, doesn't encourage Unloaded Open Carrying of Firearms in urban areas.

Thanks for the ping to a good read. I could talk about the multiple officers I’ve dealt with in my half a century, but I won’t. Just when you think you’ve seen them all, another one pops up. I’ve never been arrested and thrown in jail, yet, and I’m proud of that. The cop I want to talk about is one from 30 years ago. He stopped me, said a real prayer for me, and let me go. He had the greatest effect on me of all them.
