Vietnam vets betrayed again: Pentagon bureaucrat wants to abridge 50th-anniversary ceremonies
The Washington Times ^ | November 11, 2010 | Jim Robbins

Posted on 11/10/2010 8:39:35 PM PST by Abakumov

The 50th-anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War should be a time of reflection and redemption, when a grateful country pays a long-standing debt to veterans who nobly fought in the conflict but came home to scorn and spit. But if a Pentagon bureaucrat has his way, the Viet vets will be denied their rightful honors once again....

The proposed budget for the commemorations was $100 million, which was less than the amount spent on the World War II and Korean War commemoration efforts. For example, the 1984 commemoration of the Normandy landings alone cost $38 million....

Enter Michael L. Rhodes, director of administration and management at the Pentagon.... According to an August action memo prepared by Mr. Rhodes for Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates and obtained by The Washington Times, he urged Mr. Gates to reject the proposed commemoration program and adopt instead a "targeted" $30 million program. The memo describes the new approach as "a dignified and meaningful DoD Program of national recognition [that] need not be tied to the full timeframe of U.S. military involvement" and that will "provide nation-wide participation, while utilizing the resources involved in the most effective manner."

Mr. Rhodes' plan cuts the time frame of the commemoration down to 2015-18 and inexplicably features a kickoff in his former home of Honolulu, which is not exactly a resource-effective location. Hawaii is inaccessible for most veterans and is in a time zone where most Americans could not watch the event live on television.

Vietnam stands as a monument to Democrat bungling. Maybe that’s why Rats don’t want it grabbing headlines again.

As a combat wounded Vietnam vet living in Hawaii, I say Mr. Rhodes should stick it where the sun doesn’t shine. There are enough communists in Hawaii, to include a 1960s anti VietNam War hippie as our recently elected Governor and many others to put a sour taste in my mouth already. Congress and the American people turned their back on us one too many times.

I tried to caution others 6 years ago when Kerry ran and the people I chatted with here didn't believe me when I said the RATS are still the same RATS they were back in the mid 60's through the early 70's.......... We have an interesting scenario playing out right now, they (rats) are faced with a decision, benefits, increases, and cola for vets HAVE ALREADY BEEN FROZEN. THEIR not so new tactic is how do they cut military expenditures... they have a choice, either slow and reduce enlistment and PAY RAISES.....OR...cut funding for current military operations. EXPECT BOTH! THEY DID IT THEN,THEY'LL DO IT NOW.

I recall the day when our C.I.C quit.
I heard it on AFVN on my transistor radio.......
“ I shall not seek, nor will i accept the nomination of .......”

I said to the Gunny.....”Our Commander In Chief just quit!”

Gunny`s reply....”We be F’d again... Typical!...lock & load”

Vietnam veterans, our war dead, and their families are betrayed every day as we trade with the Communist government in Hanoi and the Red Chinese government that armed & assisted them. Both Communist Vietnam and Red China should be treated as North Korea is: evil enemies of the free people of the world.

I don’t need any more ‘welcome home’ bs. It doesn’t mean anything to me anymore. The country already ‘welcomed’ me home and I’ll stick with that one. At least it was honest.
