Dancing With the Stars: Shock and Awe in the Ballroom (Free Republic blamed)
The Toronto Star ^ | Wednesday, November 17, 2010 | Debra Yeo

The Internet's been buzzing with talk about how members of the U.S. Tea Party movement have been getting out the vote for Bristol Palin on Dancing With the Stars.

The blog Jezebel had a post about it today, complete with quotes from conservative message boards about how Bristol's supporters were exploiting ABC's email voting system to cast multiple ballots for Sarah Palin's daughter.

Jezebel quoted one site, FreeRepublic.com, that urged its members to "make liberal heads explode" by voting for Bristol, "even though she is not the best dancer."

Well, my liberal head is kind of exploding right now because Bristol made the finals on DWTS at the expense of a far superior dancer, Brandy.

And if Bristol thinks she made it just on the quality of her dancing, that's about as believable as seeing Russia from her mother's house. Even if her presence in the final three isn't part of some right-wing voting conspiracy, Bristol's appeal to viewers isn't strictly about skill on the dancefloor.

Maybe it's her youth, what Len Goodman called her vulnerability or the fact she's not typical Hollywood, which is the argument she herself made on Monday's show. And there's no denying she's come a long way since Week 1, given that she had no previous dance experience.

But in my opinion, the three best dancers aren't in the finale and I'm bummed about that.

I don’t watch this show and I’m not sure why this bothers me as much as it does. I disapprove of Palin supporters voting for her daughter simply for political reasons.

I remember the chapter about the left’s fanatical orthodoxy and intent to politicize every single aspect of human life in Bork’s Slouching Towards Gomorrah.

Anyone doing this, please read this wise man’s words if you get a moment and rethink postion please. I mean no disrespect. The libtards drive me crazy too.

Remember when comedians and poets used to win such an award?

Even beyond comedians and poets, there are professional audio book narrators who pour their heart and soul into their craft, bringing 1,000 page books to vivid life, using different voices for dozens of different characters, and injecting real drama into subject material which might otherwise be rather dull and dry. If there are going to be awards for them, they deserve recognition.

Thank you. The reason the left “owns” hollywood is because the right never dares to crash their party. Too bad, so sad.

“But in my opinion, the three best dancers aren’t in the finale and I’m bummed about that.”

That is the bottom line. And Rick Fox was better so was Kurt Warner - others were too but my memory is no match for so many contestants and the length of the season.

It’s embarrassing to see Bristol still there because of her last name. Brandi and Maks were awesome, but I will concede that Brandi isn’t that likable. Too much diva with Maks early on.

As for viewers in cahoots to support Bristol, uh, duh, the viewer votes have been a popularity contest for as long as there has been a DWTS. Tom said last night that they had the most votes ever the night before. To the producers that translates into ratings, But still these are the finals now, the producers could have dropped whoever they wanted. How would we have known?

He seems like it, but I don’t like Derick either. I think Kyle is a lot of fun to watch.

DWTS is a pure Voting Democracy in action, apparently the “real” fans who are upset would rather have DWTS as a Republic with checks and balances and all that ‘nonsense’. Teaching moment?

I was thinking the same thing. Popular vote for president?

I've watched a few of the DWTS episode simply because of Bristol. She is not very good but since the libs are making a big deal out of it ..
I'll vote for her. never bothered to vote in the past be will this time.

While i understand what you’re saying, television is vapid. DWTS is a vapid popularity contest. Lots of VERY good dancers have been voted off because they didn’t have a fan base. So what.

Here’s the ‘funny’ part (which would REALLLLLLY make liberal heads explode):

The purpose of the public ‘voting’ is to allow the producers and directors of the show (sometimes known as ‘the judges’)to determine ‘who’ promotes the most ‘viewers’.

It doesn’t matter why they get the attention of viewers, only that they do.

Hollywood knows you can’t just have perfect ‘judging’ where the exact ‘right’ talent gets the highest score every time and wins. The public loses interest rather quickly if that happens.

There has to be an ‘underdog’ that fights to the finish but in the end loses to the real talent. It has to keep the viewers following up until the very end, when the happy ending occurs.

The ‘underdog’ can be because of a recent physical injury, or a recent bout of the flu, or being a famous person’s child, or being rich and stupid, or the producer’s latest squeeze. Doesn’t matter. You’ve seen all these on DWTS, American Idol, etc.

The ONLY WAY they can keep the public WATCHING is IF THERE IS CONTROVERSY.

During the contest, other than the underdog and the top talent, none of the other contestants get fair treatment.

Bristol isn’t still ‘in there’ because of FREEPERS. It’s because of the ADDED viewers that will watch because of the controversy.

If no law has been violated then TOUGH. The rules are set up by the show that certainly wants the RATINGS that Bristol’s continued presence brings.

I love the sound of libs’ heads exploding.
