Dancing With the Stars: Shock and Awe in the Ballroom (Free Republic blamed)
The Toronto Star ^ | Wednesday, November 17, 2010 | Debra Yeo

The Internet's been buzzing with talk about how members of the U.S. Tea Party movement have been getting out the vote for Bristol Palin on Dancing With the Stars.

The blog Jezebel had a post about it today, complete with quotes from conservative message boards about how Bristol's supporters were exploiting ABC's email voting system to cast multiple ballots for Sarah Palin's daughter.

Jezebel quoted one site, FreeRepublic.com, that urged its members to "make liberal heads explode" by voting for Bristol, "even though she is not the best dancer."

Well, my liberal head is kind of exploding right now because Bristol made the finals on DWTS at the expense of a far superior dancer, Brandy.

And if Bristol thinks she made it just on the quality of her dancing, that's about as believable as seeing Russia from her mother's house. Even if her presence in the final three isn't part of some right-wing voting conspiracy, Bristol's appeal to viewers isn't strictly about skill on the dancefloor.

Maybe it's her youth, what Len Goodman called her vulnerability or the fact she's not typical Hollywood, which is the argument she herself made on Monday's show. And there's no denying she's come a long way since Week 1, given that she had no previous dance experience.

But in my opinion, the three best dancers aren't in the finale and I'm bummed about that.

I wish the voting was not part of the show. Seems to make it more of a popularity contest rather than a display of mastering a skill.

Yes, like most Elections recently.

Bristol is not a very good dancer.

It doesn't matter. What matters is that it is MAKING MORE PEOPLE watch the show, and spreading publicity all over the internet for the SHOW.

That is WHY the JUDGES have kept Bristol on the show. Because that is what the producers want.

My hat’s off to Bristol for having the guts or should I say lack of stage fright to appear before millions in a dancing competition. She attributes her success so far to working very hard in practice sessions. Her parents can be proud and viewers admire her.

. .that's about as believable as seeing Russia from her mother's house.

Yeah, whats-her-name from Saturday Night Live was trying to be funny when she said that. Of course, Sarah herself never did.

Bristol was/is the best non-professional performer on the show. THAT is why she is still there. Brandy is intimately familiar with choreography as is Jennifer. In my book that’s not fair fighting. America knows this and that’s why they vote for her.

Sure, I’m with ya on that. It is about as significant as a board game. I just don’t want to be like them. At all, EVER!

Bristol, "even though she is not the best dancer."

Yeah. Well. The only difference between Bristol Palin and Barack Obama is 155 days in The Senate.

With respect, I think you fall into the trap that the Republicans have been falling into for 40 years.

The Left owns the schools. The Left owns the media. The Left politicizes everything. Carrie Prejean lost out as Miss America because her views on homosexual marriage mirrored the overwhelming view of the American people -- and also mirrored the view of Barack Oabama. Well, a homosexual judge took offense and had her thrown out.

Within that heavily political environment, if Republicans continue to turn up our nose and say "We're too good to play that kind of game", then we will lose 100% of the time.

I see voting for Bristol as a way to send a message -- America doesn't hate the Palins, America doesn't fear the Palins. The media needs to get the message that attacking the Palins and treating them like dirt is just not a smart move.

This is a way to level the playing field. I won't cower and I won't lose the game by insisting on playing by rules that the other team is free to ignore.

Aw, you mean Soro’s didn’t worry about this vote? Too bad this isn’t the voting process for U.S. Senator’s, then we could have rid ourselves of Reid & others!

I love the fact that no matter how much Liberals try to bring down the Palins, they just keep getting more popular and keep coming right back at them. The Palins are the perfect antidote to get the Libbies’ panties in a bunch and they can’t do anything about it. I’m loving every minute of it.

Does anybody complain?

No. They DO usually watch the show, which is what the whole controversy thing is about.

There is a strong movement afoot to discredit Sarah Palin AND make Free Republic look like a cheap gossip blog. And that movement is headed by and supported by FReepers

Secret double reverse VRWC!

And Jim Rob should stop it.

Maybe you can start a website and then put a stop to it.

For the record, I've never watched a minute of Dancing with the Stars. It's just funny to me anytime a liberal gets all snippy and irritable about dumb stuff.

Which is worse? Voting multiple times for a contestant on DWTS or voting multiple times in an actual election?

Breaking News: 2/3 of the people b*tching about multiple votes being cast for Bristol Palin on DWTS voted 2 or more times in the last presidential election.

First this young girl didn’t have any confidence and worked hard to compete against many on that show who are used to performing in public of some sort. I have watched this particular time because of Kurt Warner but he and other athletes had to work hard to be able to dance as well. Emmit Smith won on another season and he was NOT the best dancer as well.Everyone who watches the show knows the fans are voting for who can dance and who they like but this time it has all been about going after the Palin family. Just this morning cnn was blasting 16 year old Willow for not using the right language when defending her family on FB and one lefty cow said she should have her mouth washed out with soap but when VP Biden said the same thing, that would be a full grown man who is representing the country’s leadership, nothing was said of that.On Fox news Liz Troutface commenting on the tlc show Alaska with Sarah that Sarah was toting her retarded child around.I don’t like to see anybody get picked on and the left has so much hatred for this family even the kids!I think it only draws people to the Palin family. I say who the people vote for wins, be it Dancing with the stars or an election in politics. And the losers suck it up!

2) It's a ratings bonanza. The show is loving this outcome.

I couldn't (even though I tried) have said it any better.

I don’t watch the show but we voted 5 votes on each device (phones & computers at home and work) for Palin (for a total of 55 votes from us). I like LIBs being upset. I like it very, very much.
