WASHINGTON Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season.
The most recent extension of jobless benefits expires Dec. 1. Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year.

Watch the Unemployment rate drop by 2% overnight.
Yep, and that is precisely what the scumbag Democrats count on.
They want to add as many government-dependent parasites to their "base" as they possibly can.
That’s nice, but our side is too stupid to couple it with a message demanding tax cuts for businesses, LLCs, S-corps, etc., to allow businesses to really hire people...no, we have to be stupid and just vote against it without sound bytes for the media saying tax cuts...
One of our relative has been collecting unemployment for ever. His wife works so he tells us it cheaper for him to stay at home and watch the kids then to go to work. Plus he gets paid for staying at home.
This is risky...
What you do is not extend during news of job growth or through some type of incentive for businesses to create new jobs (tax cuts).
By just doing this outright...it could easily backfire on the GOP and the Dems will have a field day.
You make a valid point. In the current congress, the democrats hold a substantial majority and the republican minority can not block anything. If it failed in the house, it was the democrats who blocked it, not the republicans.
“Watch the Unemployment rate drop by 2% overnight.”
You beat me to it!
good!
Maybe the bums will go get a job now.
lol, well I guess the Democrats can whine about it then in the elections TWO YEARS from now !
ROFL
Oh...I remeber that scene. I still have that movie...one of the few that I kept
The idiot Dems tried to jam the bill through under the House’s “fast track” rules. A “fast track” bill requires a 2/3 vote to pass, so the GOP has more than enough votes to block it.
Concur and agree completely.
That was a pleasant surprise to me.
Under the 2/3 rule. Now we will see how much pressure gets applied to the people who didn’t vote for it.
I agree to a point because over the decades, everyone we all ever knew who was collecting miraculously seemed to find a job a week before the benefits and federal extensions ran out.
I was out of work during the Carter Recession, and did in fact find a job. At a gas station.
This time around though, "Get a job" doesn't work, if there aren't any..It's not like we can pick fruit or mow lawns, because THOSE jobs are all taken.
“our side” isn’t my side. “our side” is who I’m fighting to defeat. The states just booted 600+ democrats from their state positions. “our side” just elected 80+ conservatives to the fed gov. “our side” has sent a clear message, and “our side” must continue to focus on what needs to be done. “our side” needs to keep the pressure on their side. This won’t be changed in one election, we MUST continue.
For over 10 years, I’ve been fighting, going to rallies where only 6 people showed up. It’s fabulous that finally, people are awake to the constitution. But, we can not fall back on the same old mindset. We must keep the pressure on full force.
Much as I feel for the ones who are unemployed, some of which
are friends, I am SO happy to see news of saving OUR money instead
of spending it!
They can't. The house is in lame duck mode. Democrats control.
They see the tidal wave and are trying to survive it.
Exactly. All the votes are public. If someone could post them, that would be helpful.
Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season. And the Pubbies aren't even in the majority, which means this is media spin at its usual. Thanks USALiberty.
Yep. I hope they have a plan ready to get this economy churning and burning.
People need to know that they can and should work at McDonalds to support their family if need be. It’s not the governments job (and us taxpayers) to support them.
Yes. As painful as it is over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, we must be vigilant. Obama strikes at these times. Obama figures family oriented Christians are not paying attention at these times.
Case in point. Congress put a cap on taxpayer money that would be spent to paper over the fraud of Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Franklin Raines, and Maxine Waters in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac debacle. On Christmas Eve Obama removed the cap by “Executive Order” in the dead of night.
Watch for similar actions in the next 60 days.
“Time to go BACK TO WORK!”
I’m not sure what state you live in, but nowadays it is simple to enter any ZIP code in Monster, Careerbuilder, etc. and see exactly what is out there. Here in northern NJ many people who wanted to “get back to work” have simply fled the state. The few jobs that exist pay probably 75% of what they did 3 years ago (while taxes, insurance have only gone up), and there are hundreds of applicants for each job. This is probably the main reason the new rail tunnel under the Hudson River was really canceled; there is simply no demand for it anymore.
Under our previous governor they admitted NJ had lost population without factoring illegal immigration into the mix. We’re losing another representative/electoral vote after the last census; the state (along with NY State) is de-populating as companies and workers/taxpayers flee. That is how NJ will correct its unemployment problem; the people will continue leaving. I hope the other states have a lot of employment opportunities, because a lot of “Jersey Shore”-looking people are coming to a town near you...
Remember last Christmas Eve. Our fight is just beginning.
I dunno this sounds like a Demorat trick. Just enough of them vote along with the Republicans to block the extension and then blame them and call them Scrooges for ruining all the unemployeds Christmas. Will have to see how this plays out.
As John Stossel says, in our society today we have “makers” (productive participants) and “takers” (dependents that take from the system).
Purdue University has a very new (and very non-PC) slogan.
“We are Makers - All”
“Fly-over Country” is rising up.

By “blocked” the MSM means GOPers wouldn’t vote for it unless it was paid for with cuts elsewhere, right??
You have that right. No quarter.
this is a double edge sword , yes I’m for not extending unemployment when you got jobs here and people just does not what to work , but when there are next to no jobs or you cant relocate to india or china then not extending is a problem 7-8 dollars and hour jobs are not going to fix the housing problem or the credit problems , or debt problems yes unemployment will come down because people not going to file , but more people will be on the street there is a big difference in not wanting to work in a good economy and cant work in a bad economy fox news had a article on the other day that for every job opening in america five americans are filling out applications for those jobs ,there are not enough jobs here in america to fill the unemployment slots.another thing to consider when these small companies have to fit the bill for obama care you think they are going to hire keep dreaming....
“It’s ABOUT TIME! How many “extensions” do people expect? Time to go BACK TO WORK!”
and to think all this time I thought jobs come from business, not from unemployed people.
Guess what? Businesses aren’t hiring! Fix THAT problem and then the UI extension isn’t an issue.
Thanks, I appreciate your support.
The GOP wants to extend the benefits, they just want to utilize unused Stimulus money to do so.
It’s a matter of creating more debt versus using debt that has already been approved by the Dems.
and they will be able to do that soon. In 2012, nobody will be able to say that republicans blocked something during a lameduck session when the dems had the House.
Working by the rules got us nothing. Oh, wait - it got us OBAMA. It got us a huge pile of Wall Street and Big Government giving loans to nobodies until the system snapped - I played by the rules, saved to buy a tiny little house that I fixed up and sold off to get a better one. The rules won, paco. They sold us all down the river floating paper to nobodies and mortgages written on TP. All those good, law-abiding risk taking hard workers shifting into overdrive in unpaid for SUVs and loading up the unpaid credit cards.
I didn’t work in real estate, finance or for the UAW. I got handed a pink slip just the same. Nothing I did contributed to this mess - and I was left with the cleanup.
Oh, I did get that low paying job and I kept (as I always have) it all in check. But just like under Jimmah Carter I went to work for myself too.
As far as I’m concerned they can shut down the government.
Like a lot of people I’m not worthy of a real statistic.
Good for the Republicans however they don’t own the majority until January. That means Nancy’s Democrats that she led to slaughter had to have bailed on her. LOL
The first order of business must be to get this economy moving. Then we can deal with habitual long term unemployeds.
The smart move would have been to cut foreign aid first.
I’d like to thank everyone on this thread. I have been out of work since late May. Though I have applied to nearly 200 positions - all of which I’m either greatly or vastly over qualified for - and this has yielded just two interviews with no offer, I see here that I’ve got it all wrong. The unemployment check - which is half of my salary and which I’ve contributed to my entire working life, has held me back. Thank goodness this madness is coming to an end. I look forward to the coming weeks when my original 26 weeks runs out and I cannot pay my bills. Then and only then, will I get back to work. Unemployment will be 2%. I will no longer be a bum. And with magic similar to hope and change, I will be back to work. Because, we’ll, that’s how easy it is. Thanks so much everyone!
