I agree. Is asking for a little common sense too much?
The stock market is not the be all and end all of our economy, IMO. If there is a big sell off, so be it as long as the liberal agenda is stopped dead cold.
When the new Congress is seated, the GOP will be in a position to put the brakes on the liberal agenda.
But we're not going to be in a position to advance the conservative agenda...without doing deals.
That's the truth of it.
Hold fast for now. Win again in 2012.
Like giving Sam Donaldson, another retired millionaire reporter for ABC news, mohair/wool subsidies??? He has an alpaca farm in New Mexico that he has been receiving wool subsidies put in place to make uniforms for the military in WWI for pity sake. All these talking heads get in on the subsidy gravy train, then rail against cuts for the “poor” which they really believe they are. Until you change this logic...
I agree. Stop sending billions of Aid to Kenya first.
Even if that's so, these are not "tax cuts" but rather maintaining current rates. No one sees a cut, rich or poor, they just avoid a tax increase.
I hate the spin the Left has on this topic. They're so damned good at controlling the narrative
it's amazing anyone knows up from down any more.
But my impression is that DREAM is dead in the water anyway -- if they get to it at all.
Understand that we still don't have a budget for FY 2011. Literally nothing has been done. And, of necessity, that will consume much of the time remaining in the lame duck.
At this time, the economy is simply more important than any other single issue.
“GOP surrenders on spending cuts in other words.”
If you have never fought, can you surrender? I’m going with capitulate.
And again, I disagree. The economy is the most important issue to Americans, but do you really think that the dems give a damn one way or another about a passing a budget? You can count on nothing but a continuing resolution, just like we had in the last few days, but there will be no budget passed by this Congress. They have the liberal agenda to advance, and that is their number one priority.
We all know that Obama had plans for the 65-70 Billion in new revenues for 2011. Who’s he kidding? Obama is also in fear that if all passes, the economy will improve to some extent, and if unemployment starts dropping,he knows he’s chopped liver in 2012!Yet he will take all the credit if two million jobs are created next year THANKS TO THE REPUBLICANS ADVICE!
There are 2 approaches to the welfare problem. Reagan talked about welfare queens and simply slashed the budget. Many people couldn’t adjust cold turkey and we had problems at the margins.
But I think we should approach UI the same way we treated welfare in the 90’s. Let’s block grant it (along with job training programs-see link below) to the states and eliminate the entitlement mandate. The federal govt should allow maximum flexibility but would ask the states for results: are you really putting people back to work?

We had so much unfinished business from the 90’s but Bush didn’t shut down a single cabinet dept or program despite having both the House and Senate. That is truly a shame.
Certainly, it is their leaders' agenda. But I really don't think they can get there from here. We've already seen some significant defections from the cause. And, so far, the Republicans have stood firm.
I don’t have a real problem with this deal. For me it isn’t so much about the people on UI as it is about more people being on UI once the tax hike hits. Another way of looking at it would be to take care of these people who are already on it or pay from multitudes more who will be freshly laid off for no real reason at all. The government is already at the higher end of the Laffer Curve and raising tax rates isn’t going to generate more revenue. So the debt problem will get worse, deal or no deal. It’s just a matter of knowing by how much or being surprised.
“Republicans said they would probably agree to extend jobless aid for the long-term unemployed.”
Now there will be no incentive for the unemployed to take a low-paying job, or a part-time job. I don’t blame them, I blame to govt. for killing any incentive to find a job.
My husband has a master’s degree, but he took a job at Wal-Mart for two years which didn’t pay much more than minimum wage. Why would anyone do that if they can receive unemployment and not have to pay for transportation, and other costs, while collecting the same amount staying home?
Give him lean budgets, and let him know in private that they will get leaner if he dare veto.
Kiss him in public, tell everyone how he wants to end the deficits and you agree with him. That he's come around. That you like him.
After he Vetoes, give him leaner budgets, and announce that the president wanted budget surpluses like Clinton had, so you cut more fat out of it to please him. Play the tape of Obama praising the budget surplus of the 90’s.
If he vetoes again, cut more. The People will cheer!!!
If he threatens to shut down Goobermint, give him a bill to keep SS, Defense, and Treasury going while we hash out the budget. If he Vetoes the SS and Defense bill, he's toast. He can't. So have it ready to go.
The only reason they have not yet passed is that the RINO’s did stand firm on this one issue, no other items will be considered until the tax extensions are passed. Once that is done, the RINO’s can no longer be counted on to block the rest of the liberal agenda, and as we've seen over the last two years, the liberal agenda will be pushed through in the next two weeks once the tax extensions are behind them. What other obscenities will be pushed upon us once the tax cut extension compromise is finished? How much more long term damage to America will be pushed through in the next two weeks? Where is the break even point?
So much for standing firm. This “compromise” is only a tactic from the left to get the liberal agenda voted on prior to the end of this lame duck congress. I fail to see how that is good for this country over the long term. IMO, the Republicans are being played the fools in this "compromise" talk, and we the producers are the ones who are going to suffer for it in the end, one way or another.
We win the election in dramatic fashion and still think the people want compromise. Vote the bills separately.
Pray for America
I'm all for it.
But keep in mind that we'll still have a Democrat-majority Senate. And to get conservative House bills to the President, you've got to win approval in the Senate.
Otherwise, Obama's a$$ won't be touched.
