Huge Senate majority votes to advance $858B tax package ( 5 R's Vote NO)

_resident Obama's $858 billion tax package won a huge bipartisan majority in the Senate Monday evening, setting it up for a contentious debate in the House.

In a 83-15 vote, the Senate quashed a filibuster by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Va.).

Fifteen lawmakers voted against it, including five Republicans: Sens. Tom Coburn (Okla.), Jim DeMint (S.C.), Jeff Sessions (Ala.), John Ensign (Nev.) and George Voinovich (Ohio).

Nine Democrats and one independent voted against the bill: Sens. Jeff Bingaman (N.M.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Russ Feingold (Wis.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Kay Hagan (N.C.), Frank Lautenberg (N.J.), Pat Leahy (Vt.), Carl Levin (Mich.), Mark Udall (Colo.) and Sanders.

“It makes no sense to me to provide huge tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires while we drive up the national debt that our children and grandchildren will have to pay," Sanders said in a statement after the vote.

A vote on final passage could happen as soon as Tuesday if opponents agree to waive the 30 hours that must elapse after a vote to end a filibuster.

Given Monday’s lopsided vote, the package is expected to win final passage easily, which one Democratic leadership aide predicted would “likely” happen on Wednesday.

Obama said he understands members of both parties are "unhappy" with the compromise, but he said the package is "first and foremost" a "substantial victory" for middle-class families.

>>Can’t understand this mass exodus of conservative values.
What is it going to take for us to overtake this betrayal,
Revolution ?<<

In a word, yes. The a$$holes in Congress know one thing and only one thing - reelection. Once they can fool enough people to vote for them, it’s back to business as usual. RATs destroying America and RINOs helping them.

The GOP is in a death spiral, broke in both money and ideals. If Romney is nominated, it will be the last nail in the coffin and guarantees four more years of 0bambi.

If he is not deposed, that will be the last election we will ever see.

Conservatives are certainly holding their own in destroying America too. How many of them voted for this mess? That is what is shocking most.

Coburn: No on tax bill but Yes on Food Safety. He tilts at earmarks and busts budgets. He is starting to confuse the hell out of me.

Here is an idea. Increase taxes on higher wage earners and we will figure out how to not be higher wage earners. Get it? I earned 6 figures for many, many years. This year I chose to run in the red... Get it?

As usual, Onyx, you are right on and beat me to the punch with your answer to Java.
Java; seriously? To my knowledge, no poor person ever got a job from a poor person.

The successful entrepreneurs in our country are better than any stimulus. They keep our free market going and employ people!! DUH, Java.

And for those who don’t but are successful, they deserve to spend their money or not, any way they want to.

Can anything Mr Obama endorses, be considered a “substantial victory”?

Robbing the dead and lots of families have to sell family businesses and farms to pay the inheritance tax. Outrageous and completely wrong!

...and most likely for pennies on the dollar, in this down economy. Robbing the dead. Sounds kind of Nazi like to me. The Jews were stripped of everything of value and last but not least their sorry lives, oh and after, the gold in their teeth and the luggage they brought with them.

I don’t see a big difference. If we aren’t quite there yet, it won’t take much longer. Government at the rate we are going will need every ounce of wealth from living and dead to carry on as in the past. The living will be slaves and the dead are the lucky ones.

How to win life’s lottery. OK! enough negative for one day.

Give it more thought. Too many people pay NO taxes at all. If we’re going to pay taxes, then everyone ought to have to pay.

Double Amen to that. The ticket to class warfare, and the winnah is...

The ones who don’t have to pay.

So...explain to me again why it costs $858 billion to leave my tax rates the same, but it costs nothing to raise my taxes (as the House democrats want)?!?! Whose money is it, anyway?

This vote makes a great campaign ad for any Tea Party conservatives out there who want to challenge some RINOs in the primaries.

That's the only good that can come of this.

How did they assign an $858 billion "cost", anyway?!?!

My understanding is that they used a 5-year scoring by the CBO, yet this is only a 2-year extension of the tax rates. Disengenuous labeling...from the media and democrats. Go figure.

Stimulus I was a trillion dollar slush fund for Obama supporters to steal from. But only the Democrats could be blamed for it ruining the economy and not creating any jobs.

Now we have Stimulus II and it too will put our children and grandchildren further in hock to the Chicoms with nothing to show for it.

Only this time the blame lays solely on the GOP senate—sans FIVE senators.
