Cop shoots, kills family dog (Golden Retriever)

A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.

But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.

“He’s a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but he’s never bitten anyone.”

A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

“Well, ya see Cathy if this had been a citizen that shot this dog, the citizens name would be all over the papers and Internet....

People are getting really angry about law enforcement playing military and treating the rest of us like escaped enemy...

Know what I mean Cathy?”

So What? Now you are justifying actions against average citizens from crazies? I condemn it all around.

Honestly, you are backing up someone advocating the harrassment of a LEO’s family. If that is the way you live your life, I am sorry for you.

“The Golden Retriever, with its intelligence and eager to please attitude, is one of the most popular breeds in the United States according to AKC® registration statistics. The working ability that has made the Golden Retriever such a useful hunting companion also make him an ideal guide, assistance and search and rescue dog. The golden-colored coat is the hallmark of this versatile breed, and can range from light to dark gold.”

[...]

“Temperament: Friendly, reliable, and trustworthy. Quarrelsomeness or hostility towards other dogs or people in normal situations, or an unwarranted show of timidity or nervousness, is not in keeping with Golden Retriever character.”

There was apparently an INVISIBLE fence. Until this thread, I didn’t even know what an “invisible fence” was. If people can’t clearly tell that your attacking dog is confined ... it isn’t as confined as it should be, and you run the risk of people overreacting to an apparent attack.

"Keep your dog confined."

Uh, the dog was "confined" - to the yard.

You are apparently part of the rabble who want a police state. An UnConstitionalist. A retarded, moronic, idiotic, feeble-minded Statist.

I'm 45. I've had hundreds (if not thousands) of dogs run toward me barking. I've never been bitten once by one of those dogs. Not to mention the fact that a single vicious dog isn't all that hard to deal with if you don't run away like a scared sheep.

When did Golden Retrievers become a threat to grown men? This is just ridiculous. He's far more likely to get hurt by a drunk woman who is coming toward him swearing, should vulgar drunk women also be shot on sight?

If you aren't willing to accept the slightest risk, don't go into police work.

If you, as a private citizen, are walking down the street minding your own business, and somebody’s dog comes running toward you, what do you do?

You kidding?

This happened a hundred times to me ridding bike as a kid...I never had to shoot one of those dogs...

BTW, mailmen go door to door for a living...How do they possibly survive without a gun and shooting dogs on a daily basis?

I ask this out of true ignorance, and I am prepared to be educated -- Police officers carry tasers, as far as I know. I would imagine (but do not know) that a taser would be effective against a dog.

Why wouldn't a cop draw his taser, not his gun, when a strange dog approached? I would picture that as safer for everyone.

Totally justifiable.

Kitty scratches can get really infected.

/dripping sarcasm

Frankly, I can’t believe that although I’m sure you’re telling the truth.

It’s just so...completely insane.

Havee the cops all forgotten the possibility of using non-lethal force?

Non-lethal force is reserved from lefty protestors, non-whites and mooslimes only.

Didn’t a completely deaf person get shot by a cop for “not following orders”?

I could swear I read that here some time ago.

You have a problem with the word "attacking".

Should some woman start attacking you with kisses, caresses and aggressive body contact, would you shoot her?

Haha. You must just be one of those retarded, moronic, feeble-minded canine supremicists ... an unconstitutionalist wanting jack-paws on the throats of good people/cops everywhere. They attack with impugnity while we wait around looking for “invisible fences” and waiting for flesh to be broken before identifying aggressive animals.

Absurd. Good grief.

You'd better be "over reacting" only if my dog is OFF my property. As it was, this dog was still on it's owners property.

You have utterly failed to explain how a dog on it's owners property was a threat.

What I do is stop and face the dog. If it stops and doesn’t show signs of aggression, I back up a little, and soon go on my way. Shooting it, even if I happened to be armed, does not occur to me as a first response. But then I’m not a cop with control issues.

Precisely. I would add that if you did shoot a dog under the circumstances decribed, this very cop would put your face in the dirt, cuff you and throw your can in jail.

To quote Orwell, "Some animals are more equal than other animals."

Not all cops carry tasers ... but, if he had one, it would’ve been a better option.

The mailman is still freaked out whenever he hears her bark. Some people are just scared of any dog.

Why not look at it from the mailman’s perspective.

He probably has 100 dogs on his route that are just like yours. Bark like crazy and looks like it wants to attack.

99 are probably, like yours, just barkers that wouldn’t hurt him at all.

1 would attack him and do serious physical damage the first chance it got.

How can he tell the difference between the 1 and the 99? He can’t. So his options are to treat all barking dogs as potential biters (and avoid getting bitten by the 1) or treat all dogs as non-biters (and gurantee he will get bitten by the 1).
