Haredim threaten to boycott Mamilla Mall
Ynet News ^ | 25 Dec 2010 | Ari Galahar

The ultra-Orthodox community is threatening to boycott Jerusalem's luxurious Mamilla shopping complex due to electric ornaments resembling Christmas lights, which have been placed along the boulevard.

Wall posters calling on the public to boycott the mall's stores began appearing in haredi neighborhoods several days after the ornaments were placed in the shopping complex.

The ads – titled "Is Jerusalem becoming Christian?" – were signed by the Rabbis' Committee for the Sanctity of Jerusalem. They stated that "if this idol worship is not removed immediately, we will declare a consumer boycott against the mall and the Mamilla Hotel, owned by businessman Alfred Akirov."

The haredim are troubled by the fact that the Mamilla Boulevard is one of the most pleasant ways to reach the Western Wall, prompting tens of thousands of Jews to cross the mall on their way to the holy site, "forcibly exposing them to real paganism".

The shopping complex's management clarified that it had nothing against the haredi or religious public and was willing to cover the light bulbs with a large cloth if they violated Jewish Law in any way.

"Every year, from before Hanukkah through February, we light up the boulevard with these lamps in order to begin the holiday of Hanukkah with a lot of light, and then continue with the lights throughout the winter," explained the Mamilla Mall CEO.

"Because I don't wish to hurt anyone, I agreed to first of all remove the green plastic, which was aimed at covering the electricity system's cables, and because they interpreted it in a completely different way I decided to remove it. I apologize if I have caused anyone injustice."

According to the CEO, Christmas trees were never placed in the mall and will never be seen there.

What sort of "threat" is that? The luxury shopping mall is going to be boycotted by angry, miserable, heavily dressed religious types. A disproportionate number of whom are on welfare.

Unfortunately, most Jewish children in Israel aren’t taught a thing about Christmas or Christianity.

Take them off the damn dole ...

There is a distinct tone, in that ad., of a group of men who badly need to go and get jobs.

I think you have the Jews mixed up with the Moslems.

Which, doubtless, is for fear that some might understand Christianity to be a logical or reasonable religion.

Just what are the Hanukkah lights supposed to be “idolizing” anyhow?

Can't say I really have a dog in this fight, other than the observation that work is a blessing that keeps a man sane. The old rabbis had a saying, "The man who tries to interpret scripture while not having a job will distort its meaning." (sorry, this is a third-hand paraphrase of something I think I read once. Correction welcome.

It's strange though -- an atheist, or one of these fanatical and malignant cultists, can be a Jew in good standing. A Jew who discovers Yeshua, however, "goes out to an evil culture" (is excommunicated).

Shouldn’t they stay out of malls and spend their time studying Torah (their one and only raison d’etre on this earth according to them) anyway?

I think you have the Jews mixed up with the Moslems.

That was not my intent. I was aiming to contrast the protesting styles of these civilized Jews vs. the protest styles of the uncivilized barbarian Palestinian savages.

I apologize for the confusion.

The more accurate view of work from the Historical Christian point of view is that it is one aspect of Adam's Curse. No?

work is a blessing that keeps a man sane

Perhaps from a purely rationalistic, secular perspective this makes no sense. But from the viewpoint of Divine Law it most certainly does.

Well, the ground was cursed for our sake. By making it harder for us to provide for our families, God provided a character-building mechanism. This reverses, to a limited extent, the damage done to us and to our environment by the Fall.

Every freeper should know that “Black Veil” loves to post anti-Jewish and anti-Israel stuff. He lives nice and comfortable and atheistically in Australia and presumes to judge Israel a nation surrounded by 200 million hostile Muslims. He despises the religious Jews in Israel. I have religious cousins in Israel and have visited them and hung out with what Mr BlackVeil would condemn as the ultra-religious Haredi. They are very nice modest people who don’t live extravagantly. Their children don’t get spoiled, are so happy with the simplest toys and don’t get many of them. The women cook delicious food with Mediterranean influences... I ate in their homes.

BlackVeil— Plus you also teach in University. What a shock. If I am wrong about this Mr BlackHearted BlackVeil then let me know

Me— A Jewish American who supports all who fight against the worldwide Jihad and that includes Israel, the Serbs, Russians, Filipinos, Thais, Hindus etc. I never liked the communists and now it is the Muslim threat with the ChiComs also a big problem. Putin Russia is also very irritating
