Buzz Builds for Kel-Tec KSG 12ga Twin-Tube Bullpup Shotgun
The Truth About Guns ^ | 12 January, 2011 | Robert Farago

TTAG loved it some Kel-Tech Sub-2000. Capt. John Raguso reckoned it was a far better choice for home defense than a shotgun: less recoil, more bullets, wieldy as a pen knife, foldable for bug-out duty, accurate, cheap, lovely! Throw in some frangible ammo to eliminate that pesky over-penetration problem and Bob’s your uncle. I’m getting one in 9mm, which may force me to switch from a Springfield XD-M to a Glock 19 (yes one of those), ’cause the Sub-2000 takes Glock mags. Anyway, the Sub-2000′s a hit. Not a runaway success, but a solid hit. But this, THIS is monster . . .

14+1 rounds from a compact shotgun? As our KSG post viewing stats and Oleg Volk’s fascination [below] prove, the buzz is building for this ballistic bad boy. We’ll make a beeline for it at SHOT. [Click here and here for more KSG gun porn]

At 15 feet, bird shot is as good as buck

thats what i used to think...but the evidence seems to be that although 'on the surface' the birdshot will have the same effect, the pellets dont penetrate deep enuff to be a sure stopper [except for the wad possibly]...ouch] unless the BG is 'buck' naked...

im link challenged, but 'www.theboxotruth.com' had some cool demos on different penetrations...

For home defense I load buck and slugs even in my 20 gage.

#4 resides in the defender, due to the fact that the bedrooms are laid out across the hall...

otherwise, 00 and slugs would be in mine as well...

I load 2&4 duplex in my pistol griped 12 gage, but the 20 gage is closest to the bed and has a laser on it.

More than likely not. Recoil is mostly based on the length of the barrel. Since the barrel on this one is about 10 inches, recoil will be light. It also looks like a gas operated receiver. Muzzle flash and target acquisition may be a real set back though. Much of the powder will finish burning outside the barrel and obscure the target.

Along the same line SEAL Conrad (Connie) Watson in the book POINT MAN favored 5 shot as the best shot size for entry and close combat.

I’ve seen bird shot vs. human body at close range, it is ugly. It basically makes about 10 pounds of hamburger. If there is clothing in the way, it mixes the fibers with the meat. The wound is big and it is deep. Deep enough that even if dressed for Anartica, it is not going to make a big difference for the person shot.

It would be my choice to use #4 Buck for home defense. Slugs or 00 would easily go through walls and possibly hit the neighbors, your children, pets, etc. The same goes for high powered rifles.

At close range, even 7 1/2 trap loads would be a great home defense round and extremely lethal at such close range.

OMG.

I need one.

Maybe two. One for each thigh holster.

Is that Chuck Norris holding it?

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

I wouldn’t trust anything smaller than #5 shot. My duplex loads are military issue.

At night, target acquisition after the first shot could be a real bugger if the muzzle flash is as extreme as you suggest.

" Recoil is mostly based on the length of the barrel. "

That's the first time I've ever heard that.

I always thought recoil was a function of the energy in the cartridge and the mass of the weapon firing it.

I have the saiga 12 and the MD arms 20 rd drum.
What I like about this ketec is that it is so short.
The saiga could be unwieldy in confined spaces such as a hallway.

That is an 18” barrel on that bullpup.

Muzzle flash and target acquisition may be a real set back though. Much of the powder will finish burning outside the barrel and obscure the target.

You've got to remember that this is a bullpup design. The trigger and pistol grip are moved forward relative to the breech end of the barrel. The chamber in a bullpup design is right under the shooter's ear when holding the weapon in firing position - the barrel isn't really shorter, just partly sunken into the buttstock.

The shooter will experience more muzzle blast, though.

the price/round of shotty ammo makes me want to be confident in birdshot for ‘close encounters’...

“That is an 18” barrel on that bullpup.”

Yes it is. I'd like to get one and have it threaded for choke tubes, then put a Metro barrel extension on it and see how it does with 900 fps subsonic loads. Muzzle flash would be nonexistent and the sound level low enough not to need ear muffs.

Last time I looked, those Aguilas were only ‘guaranteed’ to cycle correctly with a Remington, and with a Mossberg with ‘some’ user touchy-feely knowledge....

That must be the guy, and I must have mis-remembered the specific size of buckshot. Heck, I read the story in an “outdoorsy” magazine in a barber shop going on forty years ago.
