The Media's Sarah Palin Obsession - by the Numbers ['Breathtaking']
Associated Content ^ | January 26, 2011 | Mark Whittington

Posted on 01/26/2011 2:54:32 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The pledge by the Washington Post's Dana Milbank to ignore Sarah Palin for the month of February has caused the Hollywood Reporter to run the numbers on the former Alaska governor on her mentions in the media.

The results are, mildly speaking, breathtaking. That is especially true considering that Palin holds no elected or appointed office and has not yet announced to run for any.

Not surprisingly, MSNBC, the liberal alternative network, turns out to be most obsessed with Palin, even exceeding Fox News, for which Palin works as a news analyst.

Keith Olbermann has mentioned Palin on 320 segments of his new defunct "Countdown" program. He is beaten by Chris Matthews, who has talked about Sarah Palin on "Hardball."

Fox and CNN mention Sarah Palin only slightly less than MSNBC. With the exception of President Obama, Sarah Palin was the number one newsmaker of 2010.

How does a part-term_governor and_a failed vice-presidential candidate become the subject of such scorn and adoration in the media? Palin, at times, seems to have become the alternate President of the United States, her every word hung upon as if they came from the Oval Office and not from a home office in Wasilla, Alaska.

The theory seems to be that the coverage of Sarah Palin is driven by MSNBC and that network's pathological hatred of the woman. According to the Hollywood Reporter:

"So basically, the 24-hour news cycle on any given week might go like this: Olbermann attacks Palin. Fox then attacks Olbermann for attacking Palin. Olbermann counterattacks by calling either Palin or Rupert Murdoch the 'worst person in the world.' And so on."

But then, what is the source of the hatred? If Sarah Palin were really stupid, or crazy, or diabolical as her detractors suggest, she would have become marginalized long ago....

She is an existential threat to everything the left holds dear. In their nightmares, liberals see Sarah Palin raising her hand, saying, "I solemnly swear—" as Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George H. W. Bush look on. Obama has a scowl on his face. Clinton has a barely disguised leer. Father and son Bush glance at one another with be awe and amusement.

Nice writing, but she left one out of her list, and he will be watching with pride:

She is a relatively young, telegenic, articulate purveyor of conservative thoughts and values with a large following. She is the one person in America, aside from Barack Obama, whose name is mentioned in the same sentence as "President of the United States."

Works for me.

The reason they pick on her so much is that they know she has been campaigning close to two years already.

Once you enter the race, you are fair game.

That is why the others have waited and stayed out of the limelight. Two less years of being savaged is a plus.

The MSM is actually holding back. They have damned her with faint praise.

Seriously, it will not surprise me if she chooses to NOT run for president, as frankly, she's already in a remarkable position of power & influence, right where she is right now. She may decide to consolidate and grow that power & influence, it wouldn't surprise me.

In either case, I am glad that she has become an active voice in our national debate. And I'm also glad she isn't afraid of anybody, not even screwball Chris Matthews, who seems to have a peculiar crush on her and has had her on his show very frequently.

For me, I think, her most distinguishing characteristic and charming feature is that RINOS must loathe her and can't express one molecule of it to such a gracious poised intelligent lady.

LOL

Your post doesn't make sense on any level.

For one thing, she is no more running than Romney or Guiliani. In other words, none are declared and none have made any announcements. She isn't an official candidate simply because you have announced her as such.

She has a very limited run weekly show, unlike Huckabee's regularly scheduled television show. And Romney would love to be on television everyday, but it would only hurt his likeability.

I don't know if she's running or not, but it is not her fault that the media is obsessed with her. It's sort of pathological, really.

Some budding young research psychologist should look into the theory the media are acting out their feelings of guilt for pushing the weaker and harmful obama over the much more experienced, capable and likable Palin.

The only way they can ease their guilt now is by attacking her and making her look bad. Thing is, she won't cooperate and be defeated and humbled like any garden variety republican they're used to would be, which makes them try even harder.

It's a vicious cycle. They know, at some cognitive dissonant level, that by attacking Palin, they've become what they hate, but they can't stop themselves.

They know she’s inevitable.

They knew it the first time they saw her.

It's why they go insane every time they think of her.

ineluctable

I have to apologize for my reply, I thought that you and I were on a Rep.Bachmann thread, so my reply to you makes NO sense here. I asked a mod to delete it as it was in the wrong thread but they didn't.

It will not surprise me if Governor Palin chooses to not run for president in 2012, but at the same time it would not shock me if she tossed her hat in the ring. I think, however, that she is enormously enjoying her present life, particularly all her media exposure.
