Former US Secretary of State who served under Ronald Reagan joins list of senior security officials calling for Pollard's release.
Former US secretary of state George Shultz has joined a long list of former senior American and Israeli security officials calling upon US President Barack Obama to release Jonathan Pollard.
In a letter obtained by The Jerusalem Post Tuesday night, Shultz wrote that he was impressed that the people who are best informed about the classified material Pollard passed to Israel now favor his release. He cited former CIA director James Woolsey, former chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Dennis DeConcini, and former attorney- general Michael Mukasey.

“I am writing to join with many others in urging you to consider that Jonathan Pollard has now paid a huge price for his espionage on behalf of Israel and should be released from prison,” Shultz wrote.
Shultz served as the US secretary of state from 1982-1989 under President Ronald Reagan and played a key role when then-defense secretary Caspar Weinberger took action to ensure that Pollard would be given a life sentence. Shultz is currently the Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
“This is huge because he is the only one out of the Reagan- Weinberger-triumverate who were involved in the case who is still alive, and he is saying enough is enough,” Pollard’s wife Esther said.
“This is startling news that a man of his stature has gotten involved. It adds dramatically to the compelling nature of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s call for Jonathan’s release.”
Shultz is the first former US secretary to openly call for Pollard’s release and is a respected Republican figure. People involved in the effort to release Pollard said Shultz’s endorsement would go a long way toward persuading other Republicans to join the campaign.
As secretary of state, Shultz handled some of the earliest high-level contacts with the Israelis when the case first broke. According to the 1987 Eban Report by the Knesset committee that investigated the Pollard affair, Shultz requested and secured from then prime minister Shimon Peres a commitment to return the documents that Pollard had provided to Israel.
These documents were then used by the Americans to indict Pollard, and served as the only evidence against him.
Israel’s cooperation in this matter with the US was virtually unprecedented. It was reportedly the only time in the history of modern espionage that any country had ever cooperated in the incrimination and prosecution of its own agent.
I know this isn’t the case with Pollard, but I tell ya what. If I ever somehow got my hands on documents indicating that the U.S. was planning on selling out Israel to the muzzies, you bet I’d hand ‘em over to the nearest Israeli embassy.

Just because Pollard started off spying for Israel, and most Jews think Pollard was spying only for Israel, a new report from the Department of Defense, “Changes in Espionage by Americans: 1947-2007,” lists China, on Page 108, as a beneficiary, alongside Israel, of Pollard’s espionage.
In 1993 Secretary of Defense Les Aspin reported that Pollard had tried 14 times to disclose classified information in letters written to various recipients from his prison cell.

By his own estimates Pollard passed to his Israeli handlers more than 800 classified publications and more than 1,000 cables, probably the largest cache of materials ever passed through espionage. At one point, when Pollard's new wife was hoping to clinch a job interview at an international public relations firm with branches in China, he brought home five secret studies on China. Her presentation was assessed as brilliant.

Pollard also tried to sell/trade secrets with investors, revealing classified information that he thought could aid them in their investments, and for which he hoped to be rewarded later.
In short it seems that there wasn't much that Pollard wouldn't steal, and nobody he wouldn't sell it to.

I’m trying to figure out why you (and some others) seem to take a special interest in this weasel Pollard? Couldn’t you just as easily work on freeing John Walker, Jr., Aldrich Ames, or Robert Hanssen? What makes Pollard so different from those other traitors?

First, name calling is not a substitute for a factual, cogent argument.
Second, Pollard spied for one country only, gave info to one country only - Israel. He was never even charged with anything else. Of course you can read all sorts of stuff. The question is one of credibility.
Third, I did answer your question but I will try again. My interest in Pollard is that I believe he is being treated differently than other spies who were traitors and caused substantial lethal damage to the US.
Pollard spied for a friendly country and according to many people I consider patriots, like George Schultz, did no harm to the US.

Ron Olive, the source of the Pakistan and Australia BS, came out with that tidbit years later in a book he was trying to sell. Credible? Not to me. What advantage does Obama and the US gain by freeing Pollard - strategically, politically, domestically - he’ll take a LOT of flak for doing so, why would he create a new kerfuffle for himself. Perhaps in exchange for a peace deal by Bibi.....

Moreover, in light of the defendant’s continued disclosures of sensitive information for publication by the press, there is ample cause to believe that Pollard will continue to divulge classified national defense information without restraint.
