Abortion May Be Less Traumatic Than Childbirth, Study Finds (America, It's Sign For the End of Days)
Politics Daily ^ | February 1, 2011 | Della Lloyd

As the abortion wars heat up once again, there's a new study out that's sure to add fuel to the fire. A leading medical journal reports that having an abortion may be less damaging to a woman's mental health than having a baby.

The study -- which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine last week -- tracked 365,550 girls and women in Denmark who had a first-trimester abortion or first-time delivery between 1995 and 2007. Researchers selected females with no history of mental health problems prior to getting pregnant. They then compared the rate of mental health treatment (as measured by an inpatient admission or outpatient visit) within the 12 months after the abortion or childbirth as compared with the 9-month period preceding it.

The study found that women who had an abortion sought psychiatric treatment at roughly the same rate before and after that event, while the incidence with which women who gave birth sought counseling increased dramatically after having a baby.

Specifically, one percent of women sought help for possible mental disorders in the nine months before the abortion, while 1.5 percent did so in the 12 months that followed. On the other hand, 0.3 percent of women who gave live birth visited a psychiatrist for the first time in the nine months before birth compared to an average of 0.7 percent in the year that followed. So even though women seeking abortions are statistically more likely to have emotional problems to begin with, the study concludes they actually "suffer" less after the abortion than their counterparts who have children.

The scholars' conclusion? Contrary to popular belief (and heretofore received scientific wisdom), women's mental health is not seriously compromised by having an (early) abortion.

I'd like remind my fellow Freepers that today is the firs of February, and so want to wish you all a Very Happy Black History Month.

I'm the first one to be irreverent, derisive, mock those with incurable moonbat madness disease but the extent in which this drivel is straight out the bowels of hell, the worst sort of journalistic pornography ever to puke its way out of what is the demented liberal mindset, in its most cynical, disingenuous form I've ever seen, the gravity of recklessness is beyond the pale.

Let's just examine the seeming rationale for what this study is supposed to infer. Maybe, I'm missing something, maybe someone might see what I am incapable of; I couldn't get myself to get much beyond the first few paragraphs so incensed was I by the casual tone, sense of disconnectedness in which the author conveyed herself. So what conclusion, what link does this so-called study try to establish?? Is it supposed to ameliorate the feat, encourage the implementation of abortion?? That somehow because abortion is deigned less traumatic, proves what?????

The fact is the perspective in which this study was posed is inherently faulty, fallacious. Abortion less traumatic than childbirth?
Not to the aborted child.

And when the Ancient Greeks used to "expose" unwanted babies, was that a sign of the "end of days", too?

It ought to be possible to oppose killing infants without being an apocalyptic ninny.

women seeking abortions are statistically more likely to have emotional problems

and, therefore, it stands to reason they are more likely to make poor decisions - like having an abortion to begin with

I can’t wrap my mind around the idea that an unnatural act of massacre requiring the intervention of morally derelict monsters is somehow less traumatic than the NATURAL act of creating life.

Assumptions according to excerpt
- the child is not wanted to begin with
- women not seeking abortion were excluded from the study

And not to forget as described by Obama, the baby’s a ‘burdern’ after all.

It was not at all anything of a religious nature in which I added the comment. Sorry you missed the subtlety of what I tried to convey.

After our daughters were born, my wife and I were the happiest people on earth.

These people are sick. Sick in a NAZI death camp sort of way.

Do you know how far and wide ancient Greece used to spread? Yes, for Greece it was a sign of the end of days; it is a culture & population in decline (and this relates to their economic woes - a shrinking number of workers supporting a growing number of retirees). Compare Greece and Turkey in terms of birthrate, and you’ll understand that not only is northern Cyprus gone for good, it is only a matter of time before the Turks take back what the West wrested from them almost 200 years ago. It won’t be violent; they’ll be invited in by the last Greeks to keep the trains running, etc.

You have to understand that for some people the idea of having to feed, care for, and think about anything other than themselves is traumatic; in that way the contention is probably correct.

What would be the cost of monitoring 365,550 subjects over a 12-year span? The money could have been better spent on a free condom program.

Yes, true but just proves the point that any data culled from the study of those you’ve correctly identified as chronically narcissistic, can not be used, extrapolated to the population at large with any scientific validity.

I thought that taking a life and not having any emotional reaction was a mental illness? I guess the APA will be removing sociopathy from their clinical guides now.

Abortion is not about saving women’s lives!

49,551,703

Total Abortions since 1973

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions)
The reasons were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions — California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the chart carefully.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)
· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing
· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby
· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child
· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)
· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career
· 7.9% of women want no (more) children
· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health
2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So how many women’s lives have been saved by abortion?
Less than 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be “due to a risk to maternal health.” A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But let’s say they did. That means that nearly 45 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.3 million women. Or put another way; 35 babies are killed to save each woman.
Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.
I think (personally) with each generation Americans become less receptive to children (or anything else that may cramp their do-as-you-please attitude). Employers see it in the work ethic, and I personally see it in co-workers spending exhorbitant sums on pets (including health insurance) while openly stating opposition to having children. We don’t want to sacrifice anything; we are becoming Europeans (with all of the demgraphic consequences that entails). Their Muslims are our Mexicans, and they are here for the same reason: too many people opting for abortion or any other means to avoid parenthood.
