House GOP Uses Gimmick To Achieve $100 Billion In Cuts
NPR ^ | Feb 15, 2011 | FRANK JAMES

Posted on 02/19/2011 8:32:14 PM PST by JimWayne

So to get to $100 billion, House Republicans are using a gimmick. They're measuring their cuts not against the actual level of spending.

What they're doing instead is cutting against the airy fairy numbers in President Obama's proposed fiscal 2011 budget.

That budget was never passed. It might as well be a unicorn because it doesn't really exist.

This is from NPR and so they will attack the GOP, but since the GOP is going back on their Pledge, I thought it might be worth posting even though it is from NPR.

So even NPR is calling the Obama idea of a budget unrealistic.

what’s our annual deficit? $1.4T? That’s what we need to shoot for. Not a measly 100B.

They are just doing reverse-baseline budgeting to pad their spending cuts, the same way the Democrats have always done to demagogue spending cuts.

POTUS Obama is toast, and most liberals, even the nutcases, know he is taking the labor union movement down with him. He is certainly about to cause the destruction of the Democrat Party in the 2012 election. I hope the Democrat party and the labor unions see the handwriting on the wall and grasp its reality. Otherwise, they will flush down the toilet along with Obama and his hate America minions. The Dems should force obama to resign right now or impeach him. It’ll save their political butts!!!

RE :"Instead, it comes from the roughly 12 percent of the budget, $450 billion give or take, that represents discretionary spending. (The rest is mandatory spending like entitlements or interest payments on the federal debt. Or it's defense spending.) So to get to $100 billion, House Republicans are using a gimmick. They're measuring their cuts not against the actual level of spending"

On the other hand Democrats will do everything in their power to stop even these lesser cuts, and may be successful. They want to see even more cuts that they will block and attack politically?

I often wonder whether progressives consider NPR to be part of their wonderful “independent media” in spite of all the government funding it gets. In any case, if Republicans were to use fewer gimmicks than in this budget or any budget the Democrats have proposed since 2006, the NPR would be fifty four times as critical about that budget. GOP, you’re making NPR nervous. That’s not enough. Make them howl.

I agree but the point is that the GOP's Pledge has the 100B number written into it and GOP is unable to get to even that number.

The GOP pledged to reduce the 2011 Budget by $100 billion, the only 2011 budget that exists is Obama’s Budget. What are they supposed to measure budget changes against?

As for the GOP failure to cut $ trillions out of the budget, the vast majority of that is either interest payments, which must be paid to avoid default, or entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid). Yes, they should cut entitlements, but it is political dynamite, which must be handled with care.

Sorry, you are wrong. The exact wording of their pledge is as follows:

With common-sense exceptions for seniors, veterans, and our troops, we will roll back government spending to pre- stimulus, pre-bailout levels, saving us at least $100 billion in the first year alone and putting us on a path to begin paying down the debt, balancing the budget, and ending the spending spree in Washington that threatens our children’s future.

I don’t believe the GOP is going back on their $100Billion pledge.

The GOP wanted to cut 100 billion from nobama’s budget as it existed at the beginning of this fiscal year, Oct 1, 2010.

However, that budget never got passed. Instead, a series of Continuing Resolutions have been passed to keep the government afloat.

If you prorate nobama’s budget that never got passed through the end of this fiscal year (Sept 30, 7 months), the 100 billion is reduced to 65 billion.

The GOP did what they said they would do.

The GOP did what they said they would do.

And the best part is yet to come...

We have yet to see how they'll play the Continuing Resolution on the debt ceiling.

And we have yet to see what they'll cut out of the FYE 2012 budget.

So far, so good.
