Best self-defense handguns typically conjure thoughts of high priced custom handguns. But in reality, you can get great self-defense handguns for under $500. In this collection, we'll look at affordable quality for any budget. And while these handguns may not be built by master gunsmiths, we'll submit that combat accuracy and rock solid reliability can both be achieved with any handgun on our list. And with that, let's look at the best self-defense handgun for under $500. Note that prices are based on December, 2010 survey of top online handgun selling sites (e.g. Buds' Gun Shop & Gun Broker).

a bare bones new 1911 for around $350-400

nothing beats a .45ACP

probably need to get an imported one for that price...

I’d have to go with the Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge for the long-gun choice. For a handgun, under $500 a Glock Model 22 (.40 cal). If you are willing to spend a bit more, a standard GI spec. 1911 is really a better choice.

Is the Stoegar Cougar at about $400 any good? ( Formerly Beretta Cougar). It is available in 9mm, .40 S+W, and .45 ACP.

Agreed. No better all purpose weapons than the Mossbergs, or similar shotguns of other manufacturers. I’m trying to buy specific Mossberg 590 Series and the 930 series. Hard to find for some reason.
