Hello Kitty and pink paintwork: How gun manufacturers are targeting female market .....

Gun manufacturers have been responding to a soaring interest from women with female-friendly 'purse pistols' in an array of trend-led colours and designs.

Despite the concerns of anti-gun campaigners, there has been an 83 per cent rise in the number of women buying firearms for personal defence, and handbag-sized models are fast becoming a sought-after accessory across the U.S.

Most weapon brands now offer a 'female-friendly' range that wouldn't look out of place in a toy shop, with many offering to customise pistols with pink paintwork and Swarovski crystals.

And when Sarah Palin admitted to being a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, membership soared by 20 per cent.

Manufacturer Taurus has a range of pistols with pink mother of pearl hand grips, while TJ’s Custom Gunworks will embellish weapons with the Hello Kitty logo.

Sig Sauer, which supplies the US military, also offers several designs, including the P238 Lady, which boasts scroll engraving, gold flower inlay, and a rosewood grip.

Peggy Tarturo, executive editor of Women and Guns magazine, explained why the female-friendly firearms were proving to be such a commercial success.

She said: 'You’ll see guns scaled down in terms of grips more attractive for women.

'Average women tend to be smaller, and so especially with a long gun, you’ll notice between a gun that didn’t fit you and a gun that did.'

Pink shooting accessories are also becoming increasingly popular with Ontario-based Packing in Pink selling earmuffs, range glasses, apparel and target sheets in the saccharine hue.

Dee Edwards, co-founder of the charity Mothers Against Murder and Aggression said: 'I am utterly disgusted by this.

'It is not fashion, it is not style, it is ... glorifying guns and making them seem acceptable.

I think anything that makes a deadly firearm appear more like a toy or a fashion accesory is not a good thing. I don’t care about sales, I care about people’s personal safety. And treating any deadly weapon with respect and not decorating it like a damn party favor or handbag.

No sale! I’m a woman and “Hello Kitty” does not give me that equalized feeling. No sale on the Barbie pink one either. Nothing that says “there’s gotta be a My Little Pony around here.”
I want something that says there’s gotta be One Hell Of A Marine around here.

"Honey, does this gun make my butt look big?"

Somehow, I don't think that one would be answered 'yes'.

Well, they are acceptable, so go take a long walk off a short pier.

I bought a hand gun 2 years ago. Yes, the pink revolvers are very cute and stylish...but...I ruled against buying one.

The dark color of the solid back revolver is far less noticeable. The last thing I wanted to do was draw attention to the defensive weapon that might save my life. This is especially true at night and dark places.

I’m all for increasing gun sales, but this cheapens them.

Guns are for grown ups.

A gun is supposed to be a deterrent first and deadly force should always be the last resort. My fear, is that a woman’s going to pull her ‘lil pink gun out of her purse and some attacker, instead of stopping and/or being frightened off, is going to think she’s pulling a toy gun on him and continue to attack.

The more people that own them, especially women,
the less support there will be for,
or more accurately, the more resistance there will be to

gun control.
