Christopher Hitchens, the provocative British author who lives in the United States, has criticised his adopted countrys current political mood.
In an interview for the Sky Arts programme In Confidence, which airs on Thursday night, Hitchens described his disappointment at the way in which he felt Americas generosity and self-confidence had dwindled.
The great thing about the United States and the historically magnetic effect it has had on a lot of people like me is its generosity, to put it simply. Broadness of mind, curiosity, willingness to accept strangers, allowing them to become citizens really quite easily, assimilate to their arrival.
However, he went on to argue that:
There is a tremendously cramped feeling now, a mean spirited feeling, that was very much to be detected in the last election cycle. People talking in what I would once I suppose described as Dennis Thatcherite terms, you know, curmudgeonly, but rather less amusing than him. The country is filling up with riff-raff, the country is going to the dogs, the President doesnt seem to be sixteen anas to the rupee, he might even be a Kenyan. Petty, spiteful stuff of that kind and coming from some quite senior people. It hardly even deserves the name of cynicism or pessimism, its just sour and nasty and boring.

Hitchens was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus last year. The prognosis looked very grave until a few weeks after his diagnosis he was asked if he would like to be a guinea pig in the new science of genome sequencing as a possible cure for cancer.
Samples were taken from healthy tissue and from his tumour and on each of them six billion DNA matches were run, in order to catalogue any mutations found in the cancerous cells.
In The New Year came the good news that there is a genetic mutation found in the tumour for which there already exists a drug.
"At least it spares me some of the boredom of being a cancer patient because what Im going through is very absorbing and positively inspiring," he said.
Mr. Hitchens has fully described the current occupant of our White House.
OK, so leave. Head back to your native land.
ditto
go home to generous gracious Britain or any other EU country full of happy campers. Portugal maybe. Or Greece.
I don’t like to dump on a guy with a terminal illness, but my gut reaction is the same one I had when John Cleese started shooting his mouth off about George W and Iraq.
If everything here sucks so damned bad, GO BACK HOME TO LONDON!
Hitch, you’re sour, nasty and boring about Christianity so what’s the problem?
Yes, Obama has failed. But fear not, Mr. Hitchens. I predict he'll be fired from his National Community Organizer position in November of 2012.
“Mr. Hitchens has fully described the current occupant of our White House.”
Or any of the nations of the former Warsaw Pact.
Hitchens is just projecting his stuff on America — like the libbies always do.

The first two are manifestations of free market capitalism in which one is most closely rewarded for one’s own efforts and GOD-given talents, more fairly than in any other economic system. It is atheistic Communism that is destroying those beneficent characteristics.
The second two are still very much a part of America, but RULE OF LAW is necessary for their proper utilization. Gringo-hating, parasitic, illegal invaders are not the proper way to assimilate into American culture.
If the US is becoming less attractive to English Commies, there may be hope for us yet!
There was a time when people who came into this country did assimilate, they adapted to the country.
Nowadays the immigrants expect the country to adapt to them.
The American people have been raped and abused by a minority foisting its socialist views and laws on the majority. I was born in the country. I love my country. I have every damned right to be pissed at the destruction of my country. I enjoy Hitchens from time to time and I wish him no ill will, but the man can be extremely nasty and curmudgeonly. I wouldn’t describe him as happiness and light even before his illness. I guess he is righteous in his nastiness, but the rest of us are supposed to smile and say, “Thank you sir! May I have another?” If we bore you, Mr. Hitchens, with our justifiable concerns, go find some titillating country to live in.
“Hitchens is just projecting his stuff on America like the libbies always do.”
Spot on!
This jewel of his describes what has allowed the cancer that is called Islam to metastasize throughout Hitchens’ original nation:
“Broadness of mind, curiosity, willingness to accept strangers, allowing them to become citizens really quite easily, assimilate to their arrival.”
Note carefully Hitchens crafted the last part of that sentence - “assimilate to their arrival.”
The Brits did that, and look at Londinistan.
The Swedes did that and look at Malmo.
The French did that, and just now awakened sufficiently to ban Moslim attire covering the face.
America WILL be forced, by the Moslims themselves, to play Cowboys & Moslims.
America doesn’t do submission at all, and Islam means ‘submission’. We are citizens, Europeans are subjects. Hitchens is babbling proof thereof.
projection alert.
Because your Socialist Happyland has no money for cancer research, Hitchens, you come to the USA for your survival and then trash us. What an ingrate.
We should be much smarter about whom we let come to this country.
