Libyan rebels pay a heavy price for resisting Gaddafi in Misrata
THe Guardian ^ | Thursday 21 April 2011 | Xan Rice

The graves outside the shrine are packed tightly together, thick stripes of cement with small concrete blocks poking out of the earth at either end. Some of the graves are about six feet apart, like those marking the remains of Khalid Abushahma, the first protester to be shot dead by Muammar Gaddafi's forces in this Libyan port city on 20 February, and of Ali al-Hadi, who died just two days ago.

Other graves barely span two feet. Ibrahim Omran, a baby buried on 7 April. Amina Abdullah, a small girl, two weeks before. Sanad Aduraat, a toddler killed by a bullet on 6 March. Carved into the cement next to Aduraat's name, next to all the names, is the word al-shaheed, meaning martyr.

"Gaddafi is the reason for all this," said Abdullah Almohandis, an old man in a brown hooded cloak who oversees the cemetery.

Heavy explosions boomed in the distance, as they do here for many hours of each day and night. Almohandis held his open hands to the sky, shaking with rage.

The war in Misrata is now two months old. The graveyards are filling up and the hospitals are overflowing. In their attempt to end the uprising, Gaddafi's forces have killed at least 1,000 people. Around 90% are civilians who have died because of indiscriminate shelling or shooting, doctors here say.

Fighting has been so heavy that parts of the city centre are now almost completely destroyed. Buildings, homes and mosques are pockmarked with bullet holes. Walls have been completely blown away, or are blackened by fire. Entire suburbs near the front lines are empty of families, who have crammed into other parts of the city, closer to the sea. Communications have been completely cut.

A serious problem is Qadaffi’s mercenary snipers who are killing anyone they can, who sticks their head out a door, including children who just want to play outside.

And how reliable is the source for that info?

In the fog of war, hard to tell if it’s a rebel sniper or just an ordinary civilian peaking out of the window.

Maybe they’re hoping one of their leaders will say “NUTS” to a surrender demand, inspiring the world, and then Col. Creighton Abrams will lead the forward elements of 4th Armored to their rescue. There’s a better chance of that happening than NATO riding to the rescue.

At this rate, the rebels will win the siege of Misrata. There’s so many Loyalists and they cannot easily replace their losses even if they end up killing over 100,000 rebels and civilians alike in Misrata.

Correction: Not that many Loyalist troops in Misrata.

A very liberal friend of mine has a sister who writes for the Guardian.

He can’t stand reading his own sister’s extreme leftist slant.

Someone here at FR said a few weeks ago our best course in Libya was to let the two sides fight to the death and then we come in bomb and the winner.

I still haven’t heard anything that sounds better.

That they have managed to keep Gaddafi's forces to one side of the city seems a miracle, or at least a masterclass in guerrilla warfare.

Yeahhh, miracles come a little easier when you have NATO's Air Force on your side. Funny the writer never even mentioned this little factoid. "masterclass in guerilla warfare" my ass.

The Brits really are lost, aren't they--just like in 1938, they don't even know what side they are on.

Kaddafi certainly has his bad points, but he has done more for the people of his country than most Arab leaders.

As a matter of fact, C, most of Kaddafi's points are bad. In the decades since he took over from our pal, King Idris, he has squandered the country's oil wealth ...well over $100 billion per year ... on himself, terrorism. and and a stockpile of arms that, as the hapless rebels are finding out, bottomless.

Libya is a flyblown hell hole, which over the past 3 or 4 years, has not even been able to feed itself, much less educate its young people, those it does manage to educate in Europe, it cannot employ. A great deal of the infrastructure in this festering sore on the planet, such as it is, is built and maintained by foreigners.

The rebels are heavily infiltrated for sure by Islamic ani of the worst sort, but the "good" rebels had very good cause to revolt against Kaddaffi. Of course, Kid Kenya managed to screw them over quite handily. Libya is also divided by fierce tribalism.

Our man in Washington has screwed this up from the get go, as he did in Egypt, by choosing sides, then backing off support for those chosen. Kadaffi is bringing in mercenaries from around the globe, but principally from sub-Saharan countries. Kadaffi himself is a complete ignoramus with a Jr. High education who apparently gets most of his ideas of the world from MTV.

He's got to be whacked. I have no idea of whether or not whoever follows this wanker will be better or not, but now, thanks to the insane dithering of Kid Kenya, we had better find out. If not, The West, and particularly the Mombasa Moonbeam will lose all credibility. That is not good.

OH-OH. Here we go again. Maybe the rebels should not fight in civilian areas if this is such a big problem.

There is no end to our money McCain and Graham-nesy are willing to spend in new wars. Be glad McCain is not president in spite of Obama.

Gaddafi is fighting tied with one hand behind his back. He has already proved that he has cluster bombs. He has in his posession SCUD B missiles and FROG missiles. He can rain those missiles on Benghazi any time he wants.

Those missiles are probably inside bunkers. He has about 10 tons of poison gas(Mustard Gas) in shelters also.
