Obama drops climate change talk as green movement fizzles

The public is increasingly skeptical of global warming and far more worried about the economy than the environment

What the heck went wrong?" That, apparently, is the question roiling the environmental community as it realizes that the fight against climate change has fizzled.

As Brad Plumer writes in the New Republic, everything was looking great in 2008 for a sweeping effort to make good on candidate Barack Obama's pledge to start turning back the rising oceans. The Democrats held Congress. Both John McCain and Mr. Obama had promised to push for capping carbon emissions. Corporations had gotten on board. Al Gore and "An Inconvenient Truth" had seemingly softened up the public to the point where it might go along with whatever a popular president promised.

"Instead, the climate push was ... a total flop," Mr. Plumer laments.

Thanks Ernest. He dropped climate change talk in order to run for reelection. That same line of demagoguery will reemerge after he wins in 2012, count on it.

>>It was just plain bad science pushed by politics.

Well, on that note, it is worthwhile to recall the words of one Dwight David Eisenhower.

In the same farewell speech that the Left likes to quote so frequently in which he warns of the "military-industrial complex", he also very much warns of the Big Science / Big Government complex.

Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades. In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers. The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present -- and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

What was have here with ClimateGate and all the Green nonsense pushed by politicians as a means to a power grab is exhibit A for the prescience of Eisenhower on this issue.

Right. The Maldives Islsands are about five feet above sea level. For twenty years now we have been told they will slip beneath the waves any day because of global warming. Just last year a resort company announced plans to build a resort vacation destination in the Maldives.

I think I recall master scientist Ted Danson warning us of an underwater New York in twenty years. That was 1990. Where’s Ted nowadays?

"What the heck went wrong?"

What went wrong is that it became obvious that your stupid theory was a bunch of bull, and that you were having to resort to telling bigger and bigger lies. That's what went wrong, you global warming con artists!
