Gingrich announces he's running for president

ATLANTA (AP) --- Newt Gingrich, the House speaker who led a national GOP resurgence in the 1990s before facing ethics questions and resigning, is running for president.

Gingrich's announcement, made on social networking websites Monday, came after months of public flirting with a bid. He enters a slow-to-form GOP presidential field that has left some Republicans craving more options as they search for a nominee strong enough to credibly challenge President Barack Obama.

The former Georgia congressman, well-known to most Republicans, brings to the race a years-in-the-making political machine with ties to early nominating states as well as a network of supporters and donors. But his personal baggage --- he's acknowledged marital infidelity and has had two divorces --- could hinder his chances of winning the party's presidential nomination more than a decade after leaving the House.

Still, he spoke confidently of wide support.

LOL! pretty spot on on your reviews. santorum says the right things, but when he’s done, you say “who was that guy?”...oddly forgetable personality. NM guy was quite the dandy and couldn’t answer even the joke questions...i figure he won’t make it past the next debate. RP needs to be sec. of treasury...big power, low visibility. he probably does have it down more than anyone else, but does come across like a kook more often than not. pawlenty may be good but looks like a phony wityh all his hand motioning and robotic delivery. ehhh, personality fail. newt may as well be karl rove...complete stiff waste of time.

i can’t wait until the field settles out. west/cain would be a bad-arse ticket

Newt better have a plan to combat the media trash machine.

Strange how quickly they forget. Didn't they beat him like a drum during the Klintoon Impeachment?

I actually like Newt quite a bit, one of the few GOP intellectuals. That said, he has too much baggage to win..

Hey Newt! When it comes time, I'll be proud to watch you flushed down the loo?! Don't forget to keep your water wings nearby!

For all the times I voted for you, I can finally stand up and say you have suckered me for the last time.

Another Rodney King republican. Can’t we all just get along?

Now of course it wouldn’t surprise me if he were to become the gop nominee. Whenever you think that gee, the gop *couldn’t* get any more useless, they go and figure out a way to lower the benchmark.

Why?

Any candidate for federal office can pay themselves from campaign funds a salary equal to the position they are running for. And since it's more than a year before the election (and why Jesse Jackson and the rest always declare no later than August), he can pay himself two years of salary, above and beyond anything else the campaign pays for (like family members 'working' as consultants to the campaign.)

Why is he running? Because he gets to pocket almost half a million dollars, and once the campaign folds, he can do pretty much whatever he wants to with the remainder of the 'war chest' - not that there'll be much left at that point. He's got just enough name recognition and status to pull in enough campaign donations to cover this, probably a nice RV...err, campaign bus, and all those buddies he can employ for a time and then dump them on another campaign so they'll be employed through November of next year.

And the 'GOP' war chest goes down another 3 million overall. Thanks Newt!

“And people wonder why I keep saying that Obama will be re-elected.”

You aren’t the only one. I think obama has a very good chance of being re-elected as well. The gop has made snatching defeat from the jaws of victory an art form.
