River tops levee in Louisiana
AP/WWL ^ | 5/12/11

The Mississippi River has topped a levee north of Lake Providence in extreme northeast Louisiana, flooding croplands as an effort by farmers to shore up the 100-year-old structure was thwarted by the rising river.

About 12,000 acres behind the 18-mile-long levee, mostly planted in corn and soybeans, were flooding Thursday morning though no homes appeared to be in danger in the thinly populated area.

Maintenance on the levee was abandoned years ago after another, higher levee was built farther back off the river.

Here is a stupid question, we don't have floods in my area.

Is this caused from a lot of Spring rain upriver or from the snow runoff?

Correct, everything follows down hill and poor Louisanna is at the bottom of the hill.

What’s Behind the Record Mississippi River Flooding?
http://www.worldweatherpost.com/2011/05/05/whats-behind-the-record-mississippi-river-flooding-livescience-com/

This year’s massive flooding along the Mississippi River is the result of unfortunately timed rainfall and still melting snow. The overwhelmed river has already set several records, and more may be on the way.

C’mon, get real. Everyone knows HAARP is causing all of this flooding to trigger a New Madrid earthquake.

This flooding is caused by “The Rising Tide of Racism in America”.

Global warming is causing the glaciers to melt and the oceans to rise, which causes the Great Lakes to back up into the Mississippi. /s

The problem is not with the weather - but with man's effrontery to it.

When they started building the levees in the 1800’s,Twain said: “”One who knows the Mississippi, will promptly aver — not aloud, but to himself — that ten thousand River Commissions, with the mines of the world at their back cannot tame that lawless stream, cannot curb it or confine it, cannot say to it, Go here, or Go there, and make it obey; cannot save a shore which it has sentenced; cannot bar its path with an obstruction which it will not tear down, dance over, and laugh at.”

Man's machinations of nature, for material gains, has caused countless deaths and havoc.

Build your cities and homes and farms in flood basins, build your city on the edge of the ocean AND build it below sea level - and weep and wring hands when nature follows it's course and floods you out.

When will we learn? Probably never, as long as a dollar is to made in the short run.

Twain added: they "might as well bully the comets in their courses and undertake to make them behave, as try to bully the Mississippi into right and reasonable conduct."
