At town hall, federal worker losing her job confronts Obama (Gave her info to Reggie Love!)
The Washington Post's Federal Eye ^ | March 12, 2011 | Ed O'Keefe

Posted on 05/12/2011 11:31:14 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A federal employee who is on the verge of losing her job confronted President Obama about her status during a CBS News town hall meeting broadcast Thursday morning.

And by the end of the day, she’d heard back from the White House.

Karin Gallo, a spokeswoman for the National Zoo, told Obama that she’s four weeks away from losing her job because of budget cuts.

“Just under three years ago, I took a job with the federal government, thinking it was a secure job,” Gallo told Obama during the town hall, which was taped Wednesday afternoon at the Newseum.

Gallo, who is seven months pregnant, told Obama that she and her husband are also building a new house. (Watch video of the exchange above or here.)

“I’m stressed, I’m worried. I’m scared about what I — what my future holds. I definitely need a job. And — I just wonder what would you do, if you were me?

“Where were you working?” Obama asked her.

“The National Zoo. And — I would be non-essential employee number seven,” Gallo said.

“Workers like you, for the federal, state, and local governments are so important for our vital services,” Obama said. “And it frustrates me sometimes when people talk about ‘government jobs’ as if somehow those are worth less than private sector jobs. I — I think there’s nothing more important than — working on behalf of the American people.”

“Well, I — I thought that — I’d be more important and secure,” Gallo said, cutting him off.

“I agree with you,” he said....

If she was hired under civil service rules and giudelines by the Office of Personnel management, she darn well knew her status. I will bet that she falls into a “seasonal” category, employed only when there is sufficient need for her services.

The National Zoo certainly sounds seasonal... BUT, she says she’d been working since three years ago and if this was seasonal she’d darn well know it by now.

I’m not unsympathetic. I think they should replace the Senate with the animals at the National Zoo, it couldn’t make things any worse.

You know when I heard this exchange the first time, when Obama said:

“And it frustrates me sometimes when people talk about ‘government jobs’ as if somehow those are ...

... my heart skipped a beat thinking was I actually going to hear:

Obama said. “And it frustrates me sometimes when people talk about ‘government jobs’ as if somehow those GOVERNMENT JOBS ARE GUARANTEED.”

Alas, no. Typical Democrat Liberal pablum instead:

Obama said. “And it frustrates me sometimes when people talk about ‘government jobs’ as if somehow those are
worth less than private sector jobs.

What a country where you can whine to the President of the United States about your personal situation and he will act like he can do something about it. Listen preggo, unless you are Bill Gates or Barack and Michelle Obama, we are all in a tough situation. Take a number and get in the back of the line.

This child understands nothing. Last in, first out. The higher paid, long term semi-no-ahow hacks must be protected.

"Why?" asketh thou? Simple. It is they who can contribute the most to the party that put them in. Besides, the National Zoo probably has a staff of at least 10 highly paid "spokespersons," and a GS-15 supervisor @ $200,000 + perks, with 3 Assistant Spokesperson Supervisors. Also let us not forget Affirmative Action, although Gallo is a woman, she may be a White Woman, have no mental or physical disabilities, may be conversant in neither Spanish nor Ebonics, and is obviously not a Congressman's girlfriend ...yet.

Rush tore into this one today. He really nailed it and then he made a point about her pregnancy and Obama’s position on Abortion. I'm sure the Libtards are having a cow over that, but Rush always has to have a Media tweak of the day.

Snerdly checked the website for the Smithsonian since they oversee the National Zoo. He found a list of job openings there, so I guess the Woman is too lazy to check the Internet for another position while having the time to take off work to whine to King Soetoro.

I wonder if she got paid not to be at work?

Rush Limbaugh looked up this woman’s mini-resume online at the National Zoo website. She has a lot of private sector experience, so I find it hard to feel sorry for her.

She got the job TWO years ago, when Hussein’s hiring blitz at the federal level began. No more money means she has to hoof it out in the private sector like other folks who DO NOT LIVE sucking on the taxpayer’s teat.

A federal employee who is on the verge of losing her job

Good.

A lot more need to follow her, and soon.

The American Taxpayer is tired of paying to employee people at pay ratesand in numbers higher than private industry.

We're tired of paying people to work less.

We're tired of the huge packages of perks they manage to get.

We're tired of their endless job security, regardless of how feckless and incompetent they are.

We're tired of their golden parachutes.

We owe these overpaid and underskilled people nothing. They need to put down the pork and come out and compete in the real world with the rest of us.

Too true.

She should understand that the only true job security resides with being able to vote on your own benefits and raises.

After a career in the Air Force...I came to work a decade privately, and eighteen months ago...finally became a government employee (the reasons aren’t worth mentioning).

I’ve sat through various reviews from a distance over looming budget crisis periods. It’s become almost a comedy of sorts...to watch the organizational leadership play with the budget office, and figure out where they can carve off $500k, a million, or whatever. I would imagine that on a quarterly basis...there’s at least 300 man-hours wasted on this carving game for just our organization.

You are correct....there is this priority list and promises made. Labels are attached like essential, emergency-essential, and non-essential. No one would dare question the number of GS15’s or SES’s throughout the entire organization. What is curious is that I’ve watched this in private industry and know that they don’t really waste alot of time on cuts. They know precisely where their muscle is and where their fat is.

She and husband have enough dough to be building their own house? Very few Americans can afford it these days. Must have been that secure Federal job she scored? The party never ends in DC

I do give her credit for slaving away in the dreaded private sector in the past. She has a lot more real world private sector experience than the Kenyan pos.

Very good post! You go to DC and you will find most Federal agencies overstuffed overstaffed with women and blacks and gays over and above their proportion in the population. Way beyond any fair notion of affirmative action.

Not to mention that civil service tests are dead killed by by affirmative action. You want to get hired by a Federal agency you “got to know someone”. I would not be surprised if you have to pay for a job sometimes the way you do in Democrat hack dominated cities like Boston, New York and Chicago. The going rate for a judgeship being $5000...must be $10,0000 these days

These people are idiots. The economy is tanked and they spend money like confetti.

What was the rush on building a house only three years into a job that probably takes 10 years to be vested?

If her finances and obligations are out of control, why blame the President or anyone else?

My first job ever was in a steel mill and the money was great. However, layoffs were a fact of life.

The other union employees all lived way beyond their means. New cars, boats, vans, motorcycles, annual (or more frequent) vacations, bigger home than necessary, etc. They saved absolutely nothing and spent everything they made. When the layoff came they all carried on like idiots. Who told them to go out and get themselves into such debt? I will never understand that mentality.

I had tons of money stashed, bought my first car cash and got back into school.

Where was she when I was young and struggling... where was she when my family lost 3 homes and one business in Katrina or when I opened my home and took them ALL in until we could rebuild... where was she when I was repairing government equipment for free after Katrina... did she reimburse my expenses? Did I ask for help? No! Screw this whiny woman and her whiny president. WE HAVE TO STOP THIS ENTITLEMENT MENTALITY... WE NEED TO CUT THE NUMBER OF FEDERAL JOBS IN HALF!

So this whiny moron and her husband are building a house in the WDC area. Assuming they live in the outlying suburbs a 1500 foot attached townhouse costs between $400,000 and $600,000. Cry me a river. She is an obvious PR setup for nobama’s so-called town hall. Someone should investigate her circumstances and follow her in the future.

when I hear people talk about govt jobs, there is always this pretense that they feel the job is “secure” and “guaranteed” with “good benefits”.. like somehow the money for the jobs comes from fairy dust and magic butterflies. That mentality has to be challenged and changed because the reality is that at the govt, you are employed at the will of the taxpayers or whomever occupies the office of authority at the time.

Let’s not forget military. We’ve been minting LOTS of military-preference candidates to fill up slots where they’re not the most qualified. Despite my support of service personnel, we should be hiring the best available for postitions, not using skin color, gender, military service, disabilities, or other such traits to boost up candidates who are not as qualified.

You are right on target about the administration, though. Administrator costs are generally way out of line, and that goes for many levels, from federal down to local school districts.

Thank you for posting that.

I was discussing this with a co-worker recently...we were amazed to find the same position paid DOUBLE at the federal government as compared to the state government. (The state pay was about 2/3 the pay of the private sector for the same position--with, believe it or not, worse benefits.)

But despite that increase in federal positions, many positions have been eliminated in order to open up even more than that 10 percent showing...lots of nice plum positions for favorites of the left, while other positions are still being cut from the federal level.

In and of itself, I see no problem with a person asking the President for advice in that situation.

Look, as much as we like to hate government employees, a large number of them are just trying to support their families and pay their bills like the rest of us.

It does appear that rather than look online (as Rush suggested) at other Smithsonian openings that she’s there whining, but, still...

I have more problem with Obama’s reply.

yes, I am fortunate.

I was discharged and the next day they called and said I needed to come back NOW, as I had a blood infection (they gave me) that will kill me. Instead, I went to Texas that day and was in hospital 9-days where I received professional, clean, attentive care in a wonderfully comfortable environment.

The VA hospital system is the future of government-run health “care.” We need to fight that at every step and in every legal way.

Dennis, Dennis. It is painfully obvious that you do not understand Diversity.

Lemme splain. Your department has a staff of 5. In DC Diversity means the staff is 4 black women and one gay black fellow. At least 2 of the positions must be filled by a person who can read and write. It is OK if one reads, and the other writes.

Outside of DC, Diversity means that 2 of the black positions can go to an Hispanic and a mentally handicapped applicant, preferably a transgendered "Asian."

I hope that was helpful.

BTW, I would bet that the animals have also been registered to vote in DC by ACORN. Check the voter rolls for Leroy Simba, José Tucán, María La Boa, Pete Parrot.
