Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.
Appearing on NBCs Meet the Press, Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

Newt was once a champion of conservatism. It’s kind of a shame.
What we NEED is a law that says if you don’t have insurance and cannot otherwise pay, no healthcare provider (doctor, hospital, etc.) is obligated to treat you.
I’m not supporting Newt, but let’s not distort what he said. He isn’t exactly backing obamacare. Not even close.
He’s just gone flat off the deep deep end. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a political figure who has been so brilliant and yet so looney in the same lifetime. It is indeed a character problem. Could be a brain tumor too. (and I’m not trying to be flippant - I mean it must be something physiological or chemical).
Newt has turned into Scott Ritter. Rahm Emanuel’s private eye’s must have really gotten the goods on Gingrich.
Wow! That was a short campaign. Bye Newt
I think we should be glad he is revealing himself so early in the race.
I’ll sure vote for this conservative.....//NOT//
Good bye Newt. No chance.
Sorry Newt, I really respect your intelligence but that is the kiss of death. YOU’RE OUT!!!!!!!!!
adios noot
He may have been doing more than just sitting on that couch with pelosi.
Would Newt support a “one wife” for life mandate? It does appear Newt’s trying to get the Democrat nomination.
Gingrich should run against Obama.
In the Democrat Party primaries, where he belongs!
No more RINOS!
If the GOP nominates a RINO stay home as I will!
Rather the evil you know than a Rino implementing the progressive sociomarxist agenda anyways!
Is this an AZConservative satire?
We wish!
TEA anyone?
I’m going to support your statement on Mr. Gingrich. He has made some bad calls in his home life, but he has been very powerful in his political life. He is a very smart man, and I want to see the debates. Don’t let everything here detract you.
That and four buck will buy him a Happy Meal. He’s just another ruling class elitist. Piss be upon him.
Did you read the article?
He refused to criticize RomneyCare, and makes it clear he supports a federal government solution to healthcare coverage. The details vary, but what he's describing would be similar to Obamacare.
Three political “seppukus” in one week.
1. Mittens
2. Huckster
3. Newt
The Shogun’s executioner must be getting tired.
It is a shame when a” conservative” voice wants to shred the constitution.. Bye Newt
FUNG!!
Why don’t you wait for that debate. Let’s see how he answers.
I want to hear him in debate.
Clintons, along with all the Libs, attacks on him back in the 90’s changed Newt.
I would actually feel better about him if a brain tumor was discovered, this announcement is crazy, political suicide, talk.
Neuter Newt.
I Like, has a nice ring to it, LOL!
I rest my case.
"Gingrich replied he would not make it an issue in the campaign and said he agreed with key aspects of Romneycare"
New Flash, Newt. The minute you said it, it became and will remain an issue.
The man has lost whatever was left of his mind.
Yes it is rather close, in accepting the unconstitutional premise of the individual mandate. That represents a faulty view of individual rights under the Constitution that we cannot reward by election to the WH. Newt just ended his candidacy. IMHO.
God only knows, I get a cold and Newt dumps me
Let him talk. The Nation doesn’t lose capital because a man wants to share what he knows.
No, Newt was a champion of conservatism in most things, but never an across the board champion of conservatism. Newt is reasonable when he's dealing with keeping the government from expanding into something new, but he was always more inclined to try and make existing programs more efficient or a less intrusive solution than getting rid of them. Years ago he was talking about everyone having to buy insurance and what sort of subsidies some would need to do so as well as how tax cuts would free up personal money to make it less of a burden.
I always wondered if that was a ploy to get independents to vote for conservatives. Unless he makes a huge deal out of denying he's for Obamacare and spells out a really new approach to everyone being insured, I guess we'll finally know it wasn't a campaign ploy or technique.
Newt - the new McCain, Rat’s best friend, and media darling wannabe of the MSM.
Shame on Newtie— but remember, this was the guy who was going to ABOLISH the Depts. of Commerce and of Education in 1994— LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE. Anyone else wondering why Newt, Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Mitch Daniels, Huck and other assorted LOSERS are being floated by the MSM for Present?
Newt should take his “3rd Way” politics to another country!
I’ve heard enough “talk” from asshole politicians who want to toss our freedoms out the window.
I don’t want this jackass anywhere near any “debate”. I want him to step out of the picture and let someone who actually properly comprehends the constitution to debate others who properly comprehend the constitution.
Well, that was fast. I thought Newtie would at least get through the First round of Jeopardy before pouring gasoline on himself and lighting a bonfire. “I’ll take Sucking Up To Obamacare for $1,000, Alex” was not the smartest choice.
No. But he's backing one of the most egregiously unconstitutional aspects of it.
And the odd thing is, I don't recall his backing this approach back in 1992-94.
It's as if he has independently decided to "take the middle ground" and "try to make government work" -- when none of his constituents want it to "work" in this fashion.
From the time of his announcement, it only took Newt -- what, 72 hours? -- to prove he was unqualified.
Newt and HIllary have seen eye to eye on the (unconstitutional) individual mandate for two decades now. ....and probably a lot longer. He’s done. And so is Romney.
YOU wait for it. This morning he called Paul Ryan an extremist and a right-wing radical knowing full well what effect that would have on Ryan’s expected candidacy just days before Ryan will announce whether he is running for the senate. newt is long, long gone.
He is so far out of it that whatever he EVER did that was Conservative has disappeared from the political landscape, and so should he.

But I doubt it - she's got a thing for Twinkle Toes
That is what it is....the goons blackmail anyone who goes against their Marxist agenda and destroy them unless they change their positions......... The only way this doesn’t happen is if they can get NO dirt on the person....Newt was easy prey.....Rush L. was not quite as easy.....McCarthy left himself wide open with alcoholism....Whittaker Chambers would have been completely obliterated if it wasn’t for the microfilm in the pumpkin patch.......
The Commies do the Alinsky on everyone who doesn’t swallow the koolaide...and the only ones who are immune are very, very rare. You can even make good people look awful when the mainstream media lies and is nothing but agitprop.
They have been doing this since the Federal Reserve was founded and they have completely controlled the press and magazines and Foundations and through that all education except the Christian schools. Even those have been destroyed with Marxist ideology to a large extent—especially the Liberation Theology schools which are nothing but “demonic” Marxism.
LOL...you got it. At the rate these “1st-tier” losers are self-immolating, Palin may adopt the Reagan strategy and not announce until November. The frugal momma grizzly, saving her dough for the real opposition — Zerobama and his commie minions.
