The world grain inventories were already depleted from truly terrible weather in 2010. Now we are seeing even worse weather so far this year. China is experiencing its worst drought in 50 years. The government says this weather is decimating a major grain belt, and it is leaving livestock without water. Fish farms have been ruined. Who knows the long term effects? More than 4.3M people are having trouble finding drinking water. Actually this last is a much bigger problem throughout China, which has a long term drinking water problem. The Chinese have released extra water from the Three Gorges Dam to partially alleviate the drought downstream of the dam in the Yangtze drainage basin. If there is no rain by June 10, the Chinese will lose the ability to do even this. Not to be outdone, Europe is in the midst of its worst drought in 44 years.

Another element to figure into the economic conditions we face. More inflationary pressures on our food supply.

Not to mention the loss of farms, farm land, and livestock in the south. Remember all the land that was flooded to save Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

China is in big trouble. The two most basic commodities are food and water. If you don’t have enough of either, people die. No consumers, no workers, no military, no economy. Just lots of thirsty, hungry people who are rioting because they have nothing left to lose.

Starvation in China = revolution.

That’s bad news in Beijing at the Politburo but good news for everyone else from Seoul to Manila.

You hate to think about profiting from things like this, but I suppose the opportunity is there.

Food and water, it doesn’t get any more basic than that.

Yes, and there will be big surpluses of corn again, for about the 50th year in a row.

Just how much corn has been planted this year, with all the wet weather? Any reports out there?

The ChiComs government knows they need to lose 400,000,000 to 500,000,000 people in the next 10 to 15 years for the country to become a healthy again. If they can get that number from weather realted problems the ChiCom government will survive. If not, there will be civil strife!

“But the U.S farmers are busy planting CORN for Ethanol.”

Not this year. At least not in Iowa where they only have 11% of their crops planted due to heavy rains & flooding. Normally by this time of year they are 90% planted.

The smart farmers that sat on their corn last year will clean up in 2011.

I'm from central Mo. and the farmers are having a hell of a time trying to get their corn crop planted because of all the wet weather.
