SWAT team launch dawn raid on family home to collect unpaid student loans [O's Dept of Education]
The Daily Mail ^ | June 8, 2011

A father was dragged from his home and handcuffed in front of his children by a SWAT team looking for his estranged wife - to collect her unpaid student loans.

A stunned Kenneth Wright had his front door kicked in by the raiding party at 6 am yesterday before being dragged onto his front porch, handcuffed and led to a police car with his three children.

He says he was then detained for six hours while officers looked for his wife - who no longer lives at the house.

Mr Wright was later told by Stockton police that the order to send in the SWAT team came from The U.S. Department of Education who were looking for his estranged wife to collect defaulted loan payments.

Speaking to ABC News 10, a visibly shaken Mr Wright described what happened when he was woken by a banging on his front door.

He said: 'I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers.

Dressed in his boxer shorts, Mr Wright says he rushed downstairs and was about to open the door when it was kicked open.

An officer then grabbed him by the neck before dragging him out onto the front lawn.

His 3, 7, and 11-year-old children were also removed by officers and put in a waiting police car.

'He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there,' Mr Wright said.

'They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatising my kids.'

Mr Wrights three children, who were also led to the car with him

“It was a criminal investigation.”

What is the FBI for?

Hot Air Update:

Update: The television station that first reported this has updated their story to note that it wasn’t a SWAT team, but the federal Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The OIG disputes that the issue was a default, but refuses to explain further:

"A U.S. government official confirmed for News10 Wednesday morning federal agents with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), not local S.W.A.T., served the search warrant. The official would not say specifically why the raid took place. He did say the search was not related to student loans in default.

He went on to say OIG is a semi-independent branch of the U.S. Department of Education that executes warrants for criminal offenses such as student aid fraud and embezzlement of federal aid."

Er … that’s not much of an improvement. Armed federal officers broke into a house and placed themselves and the occupants at risk for a potential case of fraud or embezzlement? For someone who no longer lives there? I’ve changed the headline to reflect the changes in the original reporting, but this does nothing to change the ridiculous nature of this intrusion into a private home.

In another place and time, they’d have been they'll be pushing people into cattle cars.

Fixed the "tense".

Wow...the Dept of Ed has the power to send a SWAT team after people?
next each cabinet post will have their own private army.
Not even the Nazis were that bad.

Bullcrap. There has to be more to this story than an unpaid student loan.

I looked up the how/when/why of this....the law establishing the Dept of Education was ammended in 2002, to allow their Inspector General Division to carry weapons....

...2002.

All of our ruling class are slowly and quietly stealing our liberty.

Why didn’t the alleged libertarians in congress squawk about this?

Probably it was tacked onto something, and nobody even read the bill.

And in 2002 the Republican party controlled the House of Representatives and the White House, and would have controlled, had Jeffords not jumped, the Senate, correct?

Why don’t they send SWAT Teams to Goldman Sachs building or General Electric or the home of Timothy Geitner or even better the current occupants of the WH?

The only problem is, I don't see any of this changing if we have a Republican in the White House. The Paramilitary Organizations will just have a new boss, and will keep on doing the same old crap.

there is a very important message here for the citizens of the USA. The only thing that matters is power. Take it, keep it and use it. Nothing else will matter.

Assault is assault.

The woman wasn’t even there.

It is reasonable to expect that - even if the government were right - which they are not in this case - that they would excercise EXTREME discretion before assaulting an innocent man and his children in their home.

The chain of command need to be fired for cause, brought up[ on charges, and treated like the reckless asshats that they are - by definition - for this fiasco.

If somebody is breaking in your door, shoot first and ask questions later.

Wrong response to a team of armed police, SWAT, etc. -- you'll end up dead and not one of them will even be wounded. I have a surefire way of preventing kicked in doors and gunfire if one should be kicked in.

Mentioned idea to retired military commander who agreed and then said I was crazy. One should not be living in such a way as to have one's door kicked in. However, if one is doing something that might lead to a kicked in door, a way exists to stop it (especially the next time -- you won't be there, but the newly recruited armed force (previous armed force will not be there either) will not kick in the door in that area).

It is coming here. It is only a little way down the road, say, at the most, 5years. But be patient, it is coming.

In November 2012, we have one last chance to peacefully delay it for a while[I use the term delay beliberately because the forces of evil never rest]whether we can do it or not remain yet to be seen.
