When the architects of apartheid South Africa were drawing up their urban plans, they paid special attention to the highways. In the seaside city of Cape Town, for instance, the white rulers pushed tens of thousands of blacks and people of mixed racial ancestry out of the cities and into squatter camps several miles outside the city, in a barren wasteland that came to be known as the Cape Flats.
The government then built highways from the city center out to the flats and beyond. The idea was simple. In the event of an armed insurrection by the black majority, the South African army, controlled by the white minority, would be able to rush out along the highways with tanks and armored personnel carriers to crush the rebels.
Furthermore, when the government deigned to formalize the squatter camps and build proper homes for the residents, they also made sure to ring the camps with a Byzantine network of roads that encircled the population. There was one way in and one way out, and this too made it easier for government forces to crush would-be opponents. The flats were designed to be a sort of prison -- an open air prison, to be sure -- but a prison nonetheless.
The history of the white man's oppression of black people was the subject of a recent conversation I had with a professor at UCLA. His name is Boyd James. He's originally from Trinidad, and he speaks with a deeply resonant, Caribbean-inflected accent.

No doubt. A much more novel -- and equally productive, I daresay -- conversation might have been over the recent oppression of white people by blacks. Considering the levels of black-on-white crime, the parasitic nature of much of black "culture," the double-standard myth of "equality" that favors blacks over whites, the steady erosion of white values as ineffective, marginal black values are promoted, and the position of blacks as moral superiors in today's world, that conversation might have yielded something more than an impression that this author and this professor were just rehashing a worn-out theme.

Then tell us why blacks were making gains (slowly) into the middle class during the 50’s & we didn’t have all this violence until after the welfare state became firmly embedded in society.

In the 1950's a black man was more likely to be married, have a job and go to church regularly than a white man.

A good starting point is to look at the history of Africa.
Show me their civilizations over the last 5000 years. They didn’t happen. Central America/ south America had incas, Mayans, Aztecs... you can go into the jungle and see their ruins today, but, Africa does not have ANY evidence of one excepting perhaps a brief “great” Zimbabwe.
I have to believe that the white man oppressed them then too. (Actually, the muslims were very active there)
