Roger Ebert responds to controversy over Twitter comment about Jackass star Ryan Dunn

Film critic Roger Ebert says admitted was 'probably too quick to tweet' when he posted a message about Jackass star Ryan Dunn, who died in a fiery car crash yesterday morning. The 69-year-old wrote that 'friends don't let jackasses drink and drive' shortly after the star's death prompting fury from Dunn's friends, including co-star Bam Magera.

Taking to his blog today, the 69-year-old, who has won a Pulitzer Prize for criticism, offered his condolences to Dunn's family and agreed his brazen statement were untimely.

'To begin with, I offer my sympathy to Ryan Dunn's family and friends, and to those of Zachary Hartwell, who also died in the crash,' he wrote.

(snip)

'I do know that nobody has any business driving on a public highway at 110 mph, as some estimated or fast enough, anyway, to leave a highway and fly through 40 yards of trees before crashing,' he wrote.

'That is especially true if the driver has had three shots and three beers. Two people were killed. What if the car had crashed into another car?'

Ebert's statement today comes after Jackass star Bam Margera was left outraged by his tweet.

I remember him as one who couldn’t keep his hand off his own crotch in Jackass 3.5. Maybe Weiner will replace him.

Zachary Hartwell, the passenger who was killed, was a recently married Navy SEAL who served 3 tours of duty in Iraq.

No sympathy. Ebert shouldn’t feel like he has to apologize for what he said.

Agreed. If he felt the need to fire something back at those who were "offended", it should've been along the lines of "Okay, I'll retract my statement and offer a contrite apology - just as soon as the forensic investigation proves me wrong."

I despise Ebert as much as the next guy, but he was right on this one. I’m still laughing about his “hilarious” jabs about Rush wearing a “sumo” sized shirt. Such a wit, coming from a guy who used to weigh a metric ton.

>>> “who has won a Pulitzer Prize for criticism”. He won because the awards committee loved Ebert’s support for Michael Moore and his fictional “documentary” on Bush and Afghanistan

Ebert won his Pulitzer Prize in 1975, the first critic to win the award. The birthers would say that just proves how well planned the conspiracy is.

I’m sure the Pulitzer prize awards committee still loved Ebert in 2003-4 for his praise of Michael Moore. A leopard does not change it’s spots.

P.T. Barnum -- or maybe it was H.L. Mencken -- was right.

Don't tell me you follow Roger.

Just stay well behind him and out of the way when there's a dessert spread in front.

He posts all sorts of interesting stuff on a variety of subjects on his Blog/FB page. And about 99% of it is apolitical.

Best post of class!

His BAC doesn’t matter that much. Everything we have seen makes it clear he went beyond the limits of real life physics.

He held his “I am immortal” 16-yo mentality into adulthood. And we may never know how many kids got hurt or even killed following his sick and stupid example.

Reality caught up with him and now his life is of no meaning but his death is an object lesson to youngsters (and, God help us all, “admirers”) — stupid dies when stupid does.

Rules and laws are real. Many generations of culture sacrificed to develop them. He and all his kid-exploitation media buddies love mocking the old rules.

Well, Mother Earth is very tolerant, but Father Physics can only take so much .... !

May I return the compliment? — that is a truly excellent and concise observation!! :)

(I may use that Mother Earth/Father Physics contrast in the future. Of course, I will do so with no attribution whatsoever ;) )
