Police: Man Strangles Wife, Cat, Claims Assisted Suicide

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. -- According to police, a central Indiana man said he was helping his wife commit suicide, but is facing not only a murder charge but also a charge of cruelty to animals after police found the woman and her pet cat strangled in a Kentucky hotel.

Over the weekend, Lonnie Daughtery was found in bed with his wife. Police said they both had multiple injuries but his wife had been strangled.

Elizabethtown police said the couple was supposed to check out of the Holiday Inn Express on Saturday, but when they didn't, that's when police discovered the crime scene.

Michele Daughtery, 56, and the couple's cat had been strangled.

Lonnie Daughtery, 37, remains in jail, charged with murder in the death of his wife and cruelty to animals in the killing of the couple's cat.

Lonnie Daugherty had both a cat and cougar relationship. Thinking Elizabethtown authorities might drop the murder charge if Lonnie Daughtery pleads guilty to the more serious cruelty to animals charge.

His wife was terminally ill with cancer and had only a short time to live. She watched her mother slowly and painfully die from cancer, and didn’t want to go that way.

From what the investigators are saying she tried to end her own life and it failed, her husband then finished it for her. Everyone who knows them all say they loved each other deeply, and that if he did this is was because she made him promise to.

As far as the cat goes I haven’t got a clue what the hell that’s all about. Maybe they follow the old Egyptian beliefs and thought Fluffy would help her in the afterlife...
