California Governor Jerry Brown and Democratic lawmakers have struck a deal to close their estimated $15 billion budget deficit, including provisions to force online retailers like Amazon.com to collect sales tax from customers.
The bill also includes two other bills that were also passed by the CA State Legislature that would require online retailers that have corporate subsidiaries & distribution centers in a state to collect sales tax from customers, along with another bill that clarifies when other kinds of physical presence require a sales tax to be collected.
The three bills were combined into one and sent to Brown's desk earlier this month.
The budget deal reportedly struck by Brown & Democratic lawmakers Monday was brokered without support from Republican lawmakers, but the Democratic legislators may be able to provide enough votes to get it passed, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Other parts of the budget reportedly include an extra $12 fee for automobile owners to register their vehicles, and a new firefighting fee for residents in areas prone to wildfires.
The budget deal reportedly could pass as early as Tuesday.

"Gov. Jerry Brown said Monday he was abandoning hopes of striking a bipartisan budget deal on taxes and instead would push through a spending plan solely with the support of Democratic lawmakers."
A sure sign of tyranny is when the leader can impose taxes on the people at his whim and without the consent of the legislators. (It’s called taxation without representation.)
Jerry your a Dumbass try balancing the budget by cutting of all the money spent on Illegal Aliens.
Good luck with that. Amazon will just dump any affiliates in California to ensure that they have no physical presents in the state. More job losses for CA.
Looks like California on-line retailers will be looking to move to Texas. That will really help the budget. Guess that’s why they’re called libtards.
When democrats are in charge, you get pelosi-type government.
Amazing that they think that an Amazon tax will bring in a cent of revenue, instead of losing businesses to other states.
Exactly...
The car fee does not go into road improvement. We are now paying an additional 12.00 for the retirement funds.
Basically we pay more for people NOT to work in this state then to work.
That's why...
How long have you lived in CA?
Jerry your a Dumbass. Try balancing the budget by cutting of all the money spent on Illegal Aliens.
Calif is proof that the liberal cultural, economic and political philosophies don't work.
That’s liberals for you: laying awake at night thinking of ways to get into people’s pockets.
Elect a senile, 60’s radical who was buddies with Jim Jones and every union and Marxist he can cuddle up to and you get this...
Cap and Trade
Amazon Taxes
Illegal DREAM Act
Uncorking Prop. 13 for commercial properties
They will not stop paying the useless bureaucrats for life, ever. They will starve business to pay for unionized morons and illegal invaders’ lunches and Section 8 housing.
Brown is an abject and utter failure...but CA thinks it’s too big to fail and the US Government will bail out all its union and illegal (future Dem voter) aliens out...
Jerry YOU ARE or YOU’RE a Dumbass. Try balancing the budget by cutting OFF all the money spent on Illegal Aliens.
Fixed it.
NO NO NO. The law passed FORCES online retailers to have a footprint in California to specifically collect and process the taxes. The end result will be Amazon and a host of other online retailers denying sales to any California resident. If you sell here, you must have a footprint. Bye bye Amazon.
Next move, Google’s response, will they have to shut down their search engine in CA to avoid paying taxes on the advertizing click throughs? Not sure how that is written into the law.
Isn’t that regulating interstate commerce?
