Study draws link between gun carriers and risky behavior

As Wisconsin heads toward lifting a ban on carrying concealed weapons, researchers at the University of California-Davis have turned up some unsettling information about those who may take advantage of the law.

In a study using 15-year-old data -- the most recent available -- published online in the journal Injury Prevention, the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program says those who carried concealed weapons or who had confronted someone with a gun were twice as likely to be heavy drinkers than non-gun owners. Gun owners who drove with loaded weapons were four times more likely to hop behind the wheel after drinking "perhaps too much," and those who didn't travel with a gun were twice as likely to drink and drive.

The study, released last week, came up with these conclusions by analyzing telephone survey results from 15,000 people in eight states. It comes as Wisconsin heads toward adoption of its own concealed carry law, which will make it the 49th state to legalize carrying loaded, concealed firearms, much to the consternation of some local officials.

The Senate passed the controversial proposal last week, and the Assembly was slated to take it up today.

Gov. Scott Walker is expected to sign the bill.

>Goodness this is pure bull hockey. I don’t currently, but when I used to carry a concealed weapon.....I was ALWAYS at my very best behavior. The classes I took made it very clear that carrying a weapon brought with it great responsibility....and that made me VERY careful never to even be rude while carrying. So, I’m inclined to think this is nonsense. Also, most states run full checks on someone before issuing a permit. IF a person had a “risking behavior” personality, it would have showed up in arrest records, etc.

I think the opposite is true. Persons who carry tend to be more responsible members of the community.

“An armed society is a polite one.”<

So true. I have one bud who is a 5-dan Karate champ, who happens to be a CCW. His explanation to liberal dimwits is this “Ok, forget I have a gun. I enter another dojo with 2 martial arts masters. Your logic is because I have a gun, we are violent people and shoot each other. Well, by that logic, shouldn’t we martial arts masters just beat each other to a pulp? Of course not! How do I know what level of training the other masters have? We are actually more composed and cordial with each other. No one wants to make the wrong move or you will really see someone get hurt.”

I NEVER drink when I'm carrying. I know how much I would be crucified if I was involved in something while having a blood alcohol level above 0.000

I’m surprised that they didn’t mention that 100% of people who drink and drive were inside of a VEHICLE!!! And 100% of them were SEATED behind the WHEEL!!!! We can only come to the conclusion that vehicles CAUSE drunk driving and that being seated behind the wheel DOUBLES the chances of being a drunk driver!!!! SHOCKING!!!!

More people die of aids then they do gunshot wounds. I think UC Davis’ research is a bit misplaced.

I once read that 30% of car accidents are because of drunk driving. That means 70% of the accidents are caused by sober drivers.

Hmmm....

Bullsh!t - they're talking about all people who carried concealed and/or pull a gun on someone .. not on people with Concealed to Carry licenses.

These are two TOTALLY different classes of "gun carriers" - given that the group includes every criminal that carries a gun.

I am amazed that they didn’t somehow work in a correlation between carrying a gun and global warming.

Buncha amateurs, you betcha.

The study is not of "legal" gun owners but includes criminals, gangbangers, etc. Not surprising statistics.

In a related story, a study conducted by The WKU Man - Right Thinking Conservative American Institute found a direct connection between Leftist anti-gun sentiments, and homosexual behavior.

Fifteen years ago most states did not allow citizens to carry a firearm. So, of course, most of the “concealed carry” persons were thugs and gang members in the inner city who do all sorts of bad things like drink heavily and drive under the influence.

Yup, that’s what I was thinking. Far greater chance of anti gunners being fags, We need statistics

Jeez, that’s easy. More states allow their citizens to carry concealed firearms today than 20 years ago, therefore concealed carry has caused globull warming!

You have to give it to the idiots—they never stop!

I don’t think I’ve read anything this absurd in a very long time.

Goodness this is pure bull hockey. I don’t currently, but when I used to carry a concealed weapon.....I was ALWAYS at my very best behavior.

We have a winner!

A generally law-abiding person, exercising the Right for self protection, is not one to wave the firearm around, especially in areas where such carry might invite trouble with police. It is a weapon of last resort.

You don't go looking for trouble, maintain a low profile (instead of being drunk and waving a firearm around, which in most states with permits, will get your permit yanked in a heartbeat!).

Drunken behaviour in a state where there are no permits or you don't have one is just asking the police to search you and find your firearm, which means a whole new level of trouble.

Gun owners who drove with loaded weapons were four times more likely to hop behind the wheel after drinking “perhaps too much,” and those who didn’t travel with a gun were twice as likely to drink and drive

Is a sorry attempt to attribute pathological behaviour to gun owners whether they have a gun with them or not. Actually, it is a discussion of the behaviour of drinkers, since not all gun owners drink.

Someone is desperate for their share of the 'junk science grant fund', and I guess the global warmists have been eclipsing them until of late.

But I thought whenthe concealed laws in Texas were passed blood was going to run in the streets, and all that crap. Well national statistics show such a low rate of problems with responsible gun owners that this study will not pass muster. In fact the general public has more to fear from 95 year old grannys with depends than gun owners. BS.

It's called non-compliance. You call a far let fringe moonbat who wants America disarmed so an enlightened progressive can take power (I know, a little late with Obama in our White House, but they mean with no limits at all on their Dear Leader), and the freak will say he carries a gun all the time and shoots at random targets when he's drunk, along with anything else that makes him sound insane. They are shaping the responses with their answers, just like moderates who despise Obama will rank him an F in every category even in the communist's few strong areas in which the druggie objectively deserves a D.
