Official Calls For Riverside, 12 Other Counties To Secede From California

RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Is the state of California about to go “South”?

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone apparently thinks so, after proposing that the county lead a campaign for as many as 13 Southern California counties to secede from the state.

Stone said in a statement late Thursday that Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties should form the new state of South California.

The creation of the new state would allow officials to focus on securing borders, balancing budgets, improving schools and creating a vibrant economy, he said.

“Our taxes are too high, our schools don’t educate our children well enough, unions and other special interests have more clout in the Legislature than the general public,” Stone said in his statement.

Somewhere in there is an idea that I like. Maybe it's time that the blue counties and red counties went their separate ways.

This I would LOVE to see happen. Cali needs to be split. Reduce the power of LA/Frisco libs and the problem practically solves itself.

Bet the idea would have the support of every red state in congress too.

I have proposed that several states split for years. Western Pennsylvania should secede from Philadelphia and that area, Eastern Washington should secede from Seattle/Tacoma, Eastern Oregon from Portland, and several other states dominated by a large city full of liberals and unions.

I understand the desire, but I have to point out that Counties don't have the standing to succeed from states. States succeeded from the Union because they are/were sovereign states who joined the union. Counties are not sovereign, they were formed BY the State.

Sorry, I hope my legal OCD doesn't put a damper on things!

The nine Marxist Bay Area counties would be dead in a week if Eastern California counties cut off their water and hydro generated electricity.

California's largest economic product is agriculture, and the nine produce only part of the wine production and little else.

Counties can secede from a State, but it's very difficult (see Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1).

I don't think you would love to see this happen. We would have 4 liberal senators instead of 2. We would have two liberal states instead of one. LA/SF is liberal but so are other large areas of the state. Don't assume that these are the only liberal areas. The disease is widespread throughout the state. Sacramento is also very liberal and San Diego is getting more liberal all the time.

Anyway it's not gonna happen. Southern California cannot survive without Northern California Water so this is much to do about nothing.
