McConnell: Not a single Republican will vote to raise debt limit (Then don't pass anything)
cbs ^ | 7/14/2011 | Stephanie Condon

President Obama is still trying to hash out a deficit reduction deal as part of a Congressional vote to raise the debt ceiling, but Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell suggested today that the president ultimately won't get any Republicans to work with him.

"I bet there won't be a single Republican vote to raise the debt ceiling at the end of the day," McConnell said in an interview with conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham. The remark was in response to Ingraham's reference to a new Gallup poll showing that the plurality of Americans oppose raising the debt ceiling.

Mr. Obama and his economic team have warned of "economic catastrophe" should Congress fail to raise the debt ceiling by Aug. 2. Republicans, calling it irresponsible to raise the debt limit without fiscal reform, have insisted on massive spending cuts in exchange for their votes.

McConnell told Ingraham that there's no question the debt ceiling will be raised somehow. "If anybody seriously doubts that the U.S. is going to renig on its credit for the first time in history -- that's just not going to happen," he said.

Furthermore, the Senate leader said he's still interested in reaching a deal with the president "that cuts spending and makes a difference for the country."

However, McConnell said, Mr. Obama's interest in including revenue increases in the deal has left Republicans with two bad choices: "either sign onto a bad deal that raises taxes or go into default and allow us to have co-ownership of a bad economy."

McConnell acknowledged that the "back-up" plan he unveiled yesterday comes down largely to a political move. The plan would allow Mr. Obama to raise the debt limit without any Republican support.

-- I wonder whether the author and her editor are really this stupid? --

Yes, they are that stupid.

Assume, for sake of argument, that the average intelligence of the public drops to that of a dog. At that point, the average IQ would still be "100."

renig (alt spelling: renege) has nothing to do with "negro" or "niggardly".
1540–50; earlier renegue < Medieval Latin renegāre, equivalent to re- re- + negāre to deny

You give up too fast. I am amazed how people like you simply say that all is lost and that is the end of it. FR is 99% people who know we have lost. FR has very few people who know how to win.

If you vote to give Hussein unchecked power to raise the debt limit, then you ARE voting to increase the debt limit....and, if the current plan remains, you’re getting nothing but an empty promise of “later cuts” in return.

That is stupid.

So in his mind he just said “Hey, let’s let Obama raise it without any votes needed. Voila!” This is how senators solve problems.

This would be world-class rope-a-dope, but Zero has all the subtlety of the Charge of the Light Brigade, coupled with the leadership qualities that resulted in the Battle of the Somme.

Mitch if you and the cronies in the stupid/evil party give the Kenyan commie the power to raise the debt ceiling then the GOP has done just what you said they wouldn’t.

McConnell on Ingraham Show:

Quote 1: “ I bet there won't be a single Republican vote to raise the debt ceiling at the end of the day,” McConnell said in an interview with conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham. The remark was in response to Ingraham’s reference to a new Gallup poll showing that the plurality of Americans oppose raising the debt ceiling.

Quote 2 “ McConnell told Ingraham that there's no question the debt ceiling will be raised somehow. “If anybody seriously doubts that the U.S. is going to renig on its credit for the first time in history — that's just not going to happen,” he said.

This interview is a couple of days old but the above shows a big problem with Republicans better than I can explain it, NO Republican will vote for it BUT it will get raised somehow?? This doesnt look good.

Personally, I believe the GOP needs to tell Obama to put his plan in writing as after his budget was voted down 97-0 Obama has done zip except to make a speech. The CBO was asked what Obama meant and to score it. The head of the CBO stated we can’t/don’t score /put dollar figures to/on speeches. So, we know obama has done zip again. That is old news. I have been highly pissed with Mitch ever since he came up with this idea. Senator Corker was dead on when he stated the Senate would not make the tough choices. It is time that we vote out these spineless senators along with zero.

How about he is negotiating. This is a classic way to negotiate especially when you have the upper hand. One day you will appear to give in to your opponent. The next day you will say that you never agreed to what you said the day before.

What you are essentially saying is that McConnell is the same kind of lying, conniving, manipulative poseur as the Abomunist of Desolation. Not a very reassuring thought. If what you say is true, any 'victory' won will be pyrrhic, with devastating costs to us.

Oh we know how to win allright.

We just don’t know how we can elect a Congress that has the balls to do it.

As for McConnell he is saying not one Republican will vote to raiuse the debt limit ,but we will vote to give Obama a blank check to do it himself.

Yeah: THAT’s gonna work well.

I think he has lost what little mind he has left.

I’m totally with you on this one. The GOP needs to come up with their deal and put it out there. They need to stand behind it and let the chips fall where they may.

I believe my country's future depends on NOT raising the debt ceiling during the remainder of Obama’s term.

If the ceiling is not increased, the budget is immediately balanced, & Obama will be forced to ration revenues to cover debt servicing, entitlements, defense, & everything else.

If he fails to service the debt, the US is in default. If he fails to send out entitlement checks, seniors, the poor, & the Left will revolt. If he fails to pay the military, the military might revolt. Certainly, many Americans would be outraged if any of this happened.

If you look at the numbers, we have sufficient revenues to cover debt servicing, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, & defense, but not much else.

So, Obama can continue to fund these items, but that leaves him with MASSIVE CUTS in bureaucratic gov’t such as EPA, Education, Obamacare, & many other functions that are totally unnecessary or are better performed at the state/local level. Thousands of bureaucrats would be laid off or fired. Obama will have to chose whether to fund the Justice dept. or ACORN & the like. The glaring waste of money will become immediately apparent & ended just as quickly.

There is no question that this will be chaotic for Federal gov’t & citizens. Hard choices will have to be made now, not 10 years from now(never). The markets may INITIALLY react negatively, but I believe will go positive when investors realize the bureaucracy & waste are severely curtailed.

But, we are already in the Obama Chaos & it gets worse by the day. Soon, there will no reversing the damage. When we REALLY default at some future date, & it is sure to come, we will be hard pressed to ever fully recover. Four more years of Obama is sure to bring us to unavoidable default & world chaos.

There are 2 HARD truths here that trump everything else:

1. Obama is not going to preside over a contrived default & the resulting world economic chaos if he has the money to service the debt. This would seal his fate as the worst president in history, & enrage the rest of the world. Obama would be the biggest welsher in the world. He loves himself way too much to do that.

2. If the debt ceiling is raised, the money will be used to reelect Obama & maintain the incredibly failed leadership in Congress. You can hem & haw about associated spending cuts & a BBA, but the money will go to maintain the status quo, which is the last thing we need. (Note that nobody is talking about what the extra trillion or 2 will be used for beyond servicing the debt.)

“This whole thing sucks. If a deal isn’t made, Republicans will get blamed. I know that the Democrats don’t want to do anything but raise taxes and spend, spend, spend.”

I watched Boehner yesterday on Gretta while putzing around the shop, and it was clear that you are spot on. Obama will not put any thing on paper, and he keeps changing his toon.

Obama knows he helped destroy this already fragile economy (sorry, but both parties have been spending like drunken sailors for 12+ years), and he knows that it will affect him in 2012, so he is trying to pin this on the R’s destroying the economy. Negotiate? He won’t even put anything on the table. They don’t want a deal. He wants to campaign on how we were on the “road to recovery” and then the R’s came in and destroyed the markets. Will it work? Not with us here, but who knows about swing voters with the media on his side.

The R’s should go home, pass a budged, that specifically calls for funding the basics, like interest payments, SS, medicare, the military, call it temporary, and defund everything else until the president puts a plan in writing that they can debate on.

This is why politicians have no business in politics. They negotiate out of fear of their local constituents, instead of negotiating for the good of the country. Plus, most politicians have no business background and have never negotiated anything harder than trying to get a few more bucks out of a campaign donor.

I am not giving up FRiend... I am making contingency plans... to deny who and what these republican leaders are is to be a fool. All that I am saying is that we all must be prepared for our own backup plan. History proves that mcconnell and boehner are both liars and progressives and cannot be trusted by their words alone. Giving a scorpion a ride on your back and expecting that scorpion to not bite you... is just insanity. Ignore my words if you wish... but you do so in the face of overwhelming evidence that what I say is true... and you have to look no further back than the lies of the last continuing resolution.
