Fleischmann Watches Online Rossi Coverage
Marianne Macy

1 INFINITE ENERGY • ISSUE 98 • JULY/AUGUST 2011

The internet has been a major source of information on
the evolving story of the history-making possibilities of
Andrea Rossi’s E-Cat. One viewer in southern England took a
keen interest in watching newscast coverage of Defkalion’s
June 23 press conference in Athens, surfing websites to read
different analysis, reading newspaper stories, looking at the
websites of Rossi’s representatives, Defkalion and
Ampenergo, and watching a video specifically addressing
questions about the Rossi technology that was created and
posted by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Brian Josephson,
professor emeritus at Cambridge University. That viewer was
Prof. Martin Fleischmann, at his home in Tisbury, England.
When asked, “Are you happy about this?” Fleischmann nodded
and laughed. “Very happy,” he replied.
Fleischmann enjoyed the YouTube posting of Josephson’s
“Andrea Rossi’s E-Cat Nuclear Reactor: A Video FAQ”
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8eIhth8Iw8). Another
version, which includes a transcript, is also available at
http://sms.cam.ac.uk/media/1150242. Josephson produced
and posted the 16 minute video, working with Judith
Driscoll, Professor of Materials Science at Cambridge
University and visiting faculty member at Los Alamos
National Laboratory.
Josephson answered questions about the video by email
from his home in England.
How, when and why did you decide to create this video?
It was Judith’s idea, in fact. For quite some time we’ve been
wondering what could be done to wake people up, especially
after the announcement of the Rossi reactor. She said,
“What about making a video?” I didn’t think an ordinary
chat would quite do it, and came up with the idea of a scripted
Q&A, which might appear to be questions from someone
curious about it. To some extent it is realistic because much
of it replicates past conversations we have had. We did the
videoing on June 4; and I put it all together using iMovie
HD, with the first version being completed and uploaded on
June 21. There was some interest in getting in with it before
the Defkalion press conference. Some music from my daughter’s
band’s first CD provided just the right background, and
EV World approved the use of the Bushnell clip.
What reaction have you observed, or received, about it?
Many positive, but it is ignored by the people who should
know about it. The YouTube version is set up to allow moderated
comments. I’ve only disallowed one, which was very
incoherent.
Have you any way of tracking the number of hits on it?
On YouTube the number of views is shown below each
video, and on our media server there is a statistics tab which
shows the number of views each day and the total. As of July
5, YouTube showed the number of hits as 10,362; 47 have
registered liking it versus 2 against. Our own site has had
2,115 hits.
What is the difference between the two versions?
On our site, we are able to update uploads, and that version
was improved quite a bit technically. [Editor’s Note: The
YouTube link noted herein is this improved version; the hit
counter noted herein refers to the original YouTube posting
of June 21. Both versions, which differ only slightly, are
available.] If you want to embed the sms.cam version, there
is no automatic mechanism, but I have included the code
you need for embedding with the transcript.
Do you anticipate that the numbers will increase as it
comes closer to the October demonstration of Rossi’s 1
mW plant, or other benchmarks?
It may well increase as knowledge of the existence of the
video spreads. It seems it has been embedded in a number of
sites already.
Will you do another video?
I shouldn’t think on this subject, but there are other controversial
matters that we might decide it would be appropriate
to do a similar kind of thing for.
Any additional comments?
Nature at least cannot plead ignorance in their defense, as
some time back they contacted some of the key players following
an email from me. The people they contacted were
Mats Lewan (the person who covered the E-cat for NyTeknik)
and Sven Kullander (chairman of the Royal Swedish
Academy’s energy committee, who participated in one of the
tests). It would be interesting to know exactly how Nature
came to decide it was “not of interest to their readers.”

If Rossi’s effect is real, Pons & Fleischmann will get the Nobel Prize (as long as they’re still alive)

A poorly made video by a gentleman who seems to be “all over the place” in his explanation.

Lacking any clear demonstration of the equipment or the process it employs, it's impossible for me to believe it.

Are there any videos of the actual “machine” working properly, in front of other scientists, who can see positive results?

I dunno. I shy away from videos because they’re loaded with spyware junk.

"A poorly made video by a gentleman who seems to be “all over the place” in his explanation."

Well, the gentleman in question is a Nobel Laureate in Solid State Physics, not a videographer. But, guess what, "Lattice Assisted Nuclear Reactions" is fundamentally a phenomenon in solid state physics, so I think his expertise is probably better than yours (or mine, for that matter) about the subject.

"Are there any videos of the actual “machine” working properly, in front of other scientists, who can see positive results?"

Several. Go to the "Videos" page of Google and use search terms (Rossi "Cold Fusion").

Or, you can copy/paste this link:

Occam sez if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

And Rogaine hair restorer, if it really worked well, they wouldn’t need to advertise it.

TV’s Ronco used to plead, “But wait, there’s more!” I ain’t waiting. I suppose there’s more Rossi E-Cat coming, but I ain’t gonna chase after it and beg for info.

"Occam sez if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Note the word "probably". Sometimes "Occam" is wrong. But I don't use "Occam" to make judgments. I prefer data.

I don’t want to hear any more about what Britain is doing. Who cares? Why is it relevant to the U.S.

While I cheer Rossi’s E-Cat, it appears that it is exploiting a phenomena that is still not adequately understood. Nobody will be able to really make progress in fully exploiting what Rossi stumbled on to until we have a sound theoretical basis for what exactly is going on inside Rossi’s reactor.

You prefer data. As do most. As does William of Occam.

Got any?

You prefer data. As do most. As does William of Occam.

William of Occam was interested in a parsimonious explanation, not in reams of data.

As to the meaning of data: A device from which the initial electrical input has been disconnected that continues to produce >410C steam for many hours is producing lots and lots of data. Technical specifications about how it's constructed and the materials used in its construction are not data. Notations about measurable changes in the output of the device over time are data. The explanation of the underlying physical phenomenon, though, is not an example of data, though it may be supported or not by data. And someone's explanation of the underlying physical phenomenon may turn out to have no basis in fact, but that still doesn't mean the phenomenon does not or cannot exist.

Occam sez if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
***No, that aint what Occham sez.

“Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily.”

It is perceived to mean that the simplest explanation is the best.

Here is where Occham will prove Cold Fusion to be real:

Let’s say your objection to those 14,000 observations is that the operators don’t know calorimetry well enough, even though everyone who does these experiments is aware of the objection. Let’s say the chances of making a calorimetry error are 1/3. The chances of EVERYONE involved making substantial error is 1/3*1/3*1/3... 14thousand times... making it (1/3)^14000. The mathematical cutoff point for the impossible is typicall (1/10)^50. That makes you off by billions and billions, by thousands of orders of magnitude.

So let’s introduce a new Occham Impossibility Magnum (OIM), which is 10^-50. In a more-or-less typical cold fusion theory, KP Sinha describes how 100 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE are shaved off modern physics equations. That would be 2 OIMs.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2743039/posts?q=1&;page=112

Naturally, the physicists huff & puff about how someone like KP Sinha is a charlatan because of those 2 OIMs. But in that huffin’ and puffin’ they overlook 70 OIMs.

“Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily.”

***Not true. For thousands of years, mankind used fire although no one had a “sound theoretical basis for what exactly is going on inside”. And it was the Wright brothers who brought us across the threshold of manned flight by their experimentation, not by their theories. Rossi acts a lot like the Wright brothers.

Thanks for the link. For anyone else who wishes to view it, here is the live link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4JUJhkpc3I

This video is 41 minutes, so I’m off to watch it in it’s entirety.

As for my comment that the video is poorly made, I stand by it. The obvious fact that he is smarter than you or me doesn’t change the quality of the video.

Well, I watched the 41 minute video (subtitles and all) and I am still unconvinced.

I hope I'm wrong. But seeing the device, aluminum foil wrapped around several parts of it, I have my doubts.

And Rossi, explaining that he doesn't know why it works like it does, just that it does, isn't helping his case much.

Guess I'll just have to be content with the coming comments questioning my intelligence and credentials.

;^)

***The Wright brothers once commented that trying to unravel the secrets of flight by watching birds was like trying to learn magic by watching a magician. Rossi is a magician, and he doesn’t appear to need help for his case.
So, trying to learn the principles behind the E-Cat by watching him in action is gonna be tiring & relatively unproductive for the inductive reasoner.
