"The Undefeated" is not about Sarah Palin, it is about YOU ["If this hockey mom can do it..."]

"The Undefeated" is not about Sarah Palin…it is about YOU

Posted on July 29, 2011 by Kevin DuJan //
2008 Vice Presidential Campaign, 2012 Presidential Campaign, Action Items, Polarize This!, Purple Team - Palin, Sarah Palin

My boyfriend Justin and I drove up to Milwaukee to see “The Undefeated” on Wednesday.

It’s hard to get Justin to anything politically-related because he bores very easily, especially if charts and graphs pop up and someone starts talking about energy resource development or the minutia of legislative maneuvers in various states. Justin likes playing World of Warcraft, listening to music on his iPhone, and screwing around on Facebook.

But, Justin supports Governor Sarah Palin very much, though he knows shockingly little about her or her time as Governor of Alaska.  I had to trick him into seeing “The Undefeated”, however, because the movie’s not playing in Chicago and the closest theater showing it was at a mall in Waukesha, about two hours away from us.  There is, however, a spy-themed restaurant in downtown Milwaukee that requires a secret password to get in and has waitstaff who role-play like it’s a Cold War safe house…so getting Justin psyched for a road trip to eat there easily included a stop at the Mayfield Mall to see “The Undefeated”, since of course I timed our trip to get us to Wisconsin while the Safe House was closed between lunch and dinner shifts.

You betcha.

The theater was quite full for the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday. Peeking in other movies that were playing, “The Undefeated” had as many people watching it as Transformers, Horrible Bosses, Bridesmaids, and other Hollywood films did.  The difference was that in “The Undefeated” the audience didn’t just sit there staring at a giant screen absorbing loud explosions and silently taking in special effects.  In “The Undefeated”, audiences were cheering Governor Palin’s political speeches and thinking about what they could do to defeat both the Left and the Cocktail Party GOP establishment in their own ways, following the example of a small town hockey mom who decided one day to do just that on her own.

“The Undefeated” is nominally a documentary about Governor Sarah Palin, but it’s really about YOU.

Justin was glued to the screen throughout the whole movie, which I’ve never seen happen.  He didn’t update his Facebook or text message once during the screening, which is something I’ve never seen happen before.  He asked me a lot of questions during the movie, about who different people like Andrew Breitbart and Tammy Bruce were. He had no idea who Meg Stapleton or Thomas Van Flein were, but came away from the film admiring them.  The movie held his attention and really made Justin think about how terrible the GOP Cocktail Party establishment really is and how much those fools enable the Left to destroy our country.

I have no idea what the film’s director intended when he set out to make this movie, but this is the impact “The Undefeated” had on Justin.  For me, it was the shot of adrenaline I needed to rev me up to do everything I can for Governor Palin’s presidential campaign, because I believe she is truly the best hope we have of rescuing this country from the Left and putting America back on the right track again.

Whenever I hear Governor Palin speak, I think about being back in grade school learning about various historical figures who were there in moments when America needed them most.  Some are fictional, like Johnny Tremain, from a novel that inspired a younger me to wonder what I would have done if I was alive during the American Revolution.  The nuns who taught me in Catholic School had a lot of very creative lesson plans, so our classes were forever putting on skits or reading creative writing essays assigned to us where we had to imagine being Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Mercy Otis Warren, Martin Luther King Jr., or other determined, passionate, American heroes. Just as these people rose to the challenges of their times and stood formidably in America’s corner when needed, so does Governor Palin.

We are in a period of immense crisis, when America is very truly being attacked from three clear sides: the Left, which wants to destroy the country as we know it and transform the United States into a third world heap; the Cocktail Party GOP establishment, whose genetic stupidity and obsession with media-attention and false-praise commit these self-centered fools to do the Left’s bidding as often as possible, regardless of the detrimental effects on our country; and external forces like George Soros, who in James Bond villain-style just want to watch the world burn, for the fun of it.

After seeing “The Undefeated”, Justin couldn’t believe how many times Governor Palin called the Left out for what it’s doing to America.  He cheered every time the Governor was shown taking on the GOP Cocktail Party establishment.  Though the film didn’t mention Soros specifically, it did briefly address the September 2008 Lehman Brothers financial meltdown Soros engineered as an “October Surprise” to secure the election for Obama.  Justin knew Soros was behind this and asked why no one in the media or the Republican ranks has ever talked about what really happened that September and how people like Soros were involved.

Justin still doesn’t understand the media is 100% in the tank for the Left, and works aggressively to push the Left’s agenda.  He also doesn’t fully understand why the Cocktail Party GOP establishment behaves the way it does, or why it’s pushing limp, soggy sandwiches like Mittens Romney or Tim Pawlenty for the 2012 presidential nomination…with the media’s great assistance.

“Why does the media want Mittens to be the nominee so badly and why do Republicans let the media pick their candidates, when the media wants Democrats to win?” Justin asked in the car on the way to dinner.

“Because the Cocktail Party GOP establishment doesn’t care about winning elections, and in many cases is happier losing.  Losing means they don’t need a plan for when the election is over and they don’t have to take on the responsibility of fixing the problems we’re facing.  They can just have their cocktail parties and fundraisers, wear nice suits and look important, and court the media’s fawning adoration by signing up for anything labeled “bipartisan” no matter how much whatever this is hurts the country”, I explained to him.

“Why do people let the Cocktail Party get away with this?” Justin asked.

I have never been able to answer this, because I have never — and will never — understand it.

But Justin’s an example of someone who only nominally pays attention to the news and who thinks most political discussions are boring. He also forever believes that someone else is taking care of whatever needs to be taken care of, so he doesn’t need to worry about it.  He assumes that Republicans and Democrats are different, and that if the Democrats are doing something bad that Republicans will stop them because that’s what Republicans are there for.

Justin has not spent much time at all looking at what the Cocktail Party GOP establishment is really all about or how it conducts itself in power.

I doubt many people who don’t read political sites all day, every day, have taken the time to really ponder this.

By watching what Governor Palin has faced through the years going up against the Cocktail Party GOP establishment, and enduring the full-bore attacks from the Left since 2008, it’s very clear just how difficult fighting these anti-American villains really is at the end of the day.

Look at all the battles Governor Palin has engaged in…and won…never losing her fighting spirit because she loves this country so much.  You can’t watch her in “The Undefeated” without feeling her patriotism wash over you, to inspire you to get up out of your seat and do whatever you can for the Resistance too.

While there’s nothing in the movie that supporters of Governor Palin don’t already know (if they have read Going Rogue and have been following her closely on Facebook), seeing her story up on the screen and hearing her words through the years as she consistently took on the Left and the Cocktail Party GOP establishment in equal measure really is inspiring on a personal level.

If this hockey mom from a small town could do it…then so can you.

Maybe you aren’t going to become a mayor or a natural resources commissioner or a governor or a presidential candidate yourself, but there’s no reason you can’t do SOMETHING in your own way to drive the Left nuts and rattle the Cocktail Party GOP establishment.

Just like Governor Palin did, starting back to when she was a private citizen like the rest of us…and continuing into her post-governorship role as a private citizen again.

Two days after seeing the movie, Justin is still asking questions about what he saw up on the screen.  He wants to know about all the bad things the Cocktail Party GOP establishment does and why Republican voters tolerate that garbage.

I have never seen Justin this tuned-in regarding politics.  It’s amazing, actually.

So while “The Undefeated” is not perfect, and it’s clear it was put together on a very limited budget, it’s a marvelous success in that it truly does inspire viewers to think about what THEY too can do to help America the way Governor Palin consistently has.

At it’s heart, the movie’s not about Sarah Palin…but it really is about YOU and what YOU feel when you see the Governor on the screen, hear her words ring loudly and clearly, and hopefully answer her call to get involved and join the Resistance too.

See this movie however and wherever you can…and take as many Justins of your own with you too!

THIS is the kind of response that we should hope to get from "dragging your friends" to see "The Undefeated," IMHO!

From one of the comments posted after this article:
...Justin's reaction is significant. I think the Justins of this country are the most important targets of The Undefeated.

There are confused and uninformed moderates who hear some vague buzz that Sarah is radical, stupid, and whiny.

Since they aren't political junkies, they have no facts to counter these charges and they're just as happy to believe them as to question them.

In fact, it's not important that large numbers of liberals or confused moderates watch The Undefeated; it's more important that the weak-tea Republicans who do watch it and who currently dismiss Sarah as having "too many negatives" will see it and begin to reluctantly reverse the buzz.

The Undefeated, to me, is about reversing the buzz.

And if (please God, WHEN) Sarah announces, a lot of people will watch in On Demand or on DVD to see what she's all about, and the buzz will become a roar that will drown out the Palin-hatred.

I would have loved to have seen this on a large screen in a filled with a mix of supporters and doubters. I would love to be standing and cheering at the end.

I hope it makes it to a few theaters in some NE locations before it goes to PPV.

And if (please God, WHEN) Sarah announces, a lot of people will watch it On Demand or on DVD...
...which is a good thing, because the folks marketing this amazing film certainly seem to have BUNGLED their "limited theatrical release" strategy on the BIG SCREEN.

From my frustrated rants about the DISMAL results so far, on THIS thread:

Friendly Reminder: "The Undefeated" opens today in SLC, Charleston, Cincinnati and Columbus

-- snip --

As of this morning, "The Undefeated" is currently playing in a GRAND TOTAL of four theaters -- nationwide.

Click here for the most current list:

theundefeated.cinedigm.com/tickets.html
As we feared, "The Undefeated" is NO LONGER SHOWING at the fourteen OTHER theaters
where it was originally introduced -- on 7/15, and 7/22. :(

-- snip --

The plan, apparently, was to spend VERY LITTLE MONEY on "traditional marketing" --
and instead depend on "social media" and "local networking."

And THAT strategy has clearly NOT been very effective --
after an initial promising spike in ticket sales on opening night.

Bingo!
That is STILL the best way to experience this extraordinary film, IMHO.
Right now -- barring a MAJOR CHANGE in the current marketing strategy -- it appears that the only way for this to happen is for local "grassroots" organizations to "go rogue" -- and screen "bootleg" copies of the DVD in churches, masonic halls, etc. -- rather than inside the AMC theaters, as I had hoped.

You would have a hard time finding a filled theater, even during opening weekend the per screen average was 52 people.

The goal in a limited release is to pick and choose the cities the movie will show in in order to maximize it’s profits. As an example if somebody was making a movie about how wonderful gay parents were they might open the film in San Francisco and New York. After a limited release movie does well in the targeted cities the company releasing it can then go to other theaters and say, “This movie is making X amount of dollars per screen. You should show it too!”

That was the plan with The Undefeated. The marketing company picked fairly large market, fairly conservative cities to open in on the assumption that the film would do best there for an initial roll out. The problem is the movie tanked. Any way you slice it. It tanked.

What makes you think he picked that method? Maybe he was forced, because the theaters wouldn’t book it.

The major flaw in their theatrical release strategy so far (IMHO) has been in the TIMING of their new showings.

We had THREE WEEKS notice before the grand opening in Orange, CA.

And, we had roughly 250 people at the 5 pm show, and 300 (sold out!) at the 7 pm show.

We had THREE DAYS notice before the opening one week later in Ontario, CA — about 75 miles away.

And, we had roughly 10 people at the 6 pm show, and 20 at the 8 pm show.

Same movie. Similar part of the country. Similar demographics/political breakdown.
Hmmm. I wonder if there is any connection between ADVANCE NOTICE and ATTENDANCE. ;)

If they’re not going to ADVERTISE the damn things, they will have to give us MUCH MORE TIME — to get the word out through “non-traditional” channels.

Maybe he was forced, because the theaters wouldn’t book it.

They were probably not FORCED by dastardly theater owners -- but perhaps they were INFLUENCED by the political timetable of a potential Labor Day announcement.

I can see them sacrificing short-term THEATRICAL success for long-term POLITICAL results.

Getting the DVDs out in time for her big announcement is just about the **only** explanation for their otherwise "bone-headed" actions to date.

Really, what does sold out mean to do and the need for another screening to provide for the overflow?

This was posted by a person named Kevin DuJan and it was posted at Hillbuzz, so I think it might be a good bet that Justin's "gal" is Kevin.
