‘Sen. Tea Party': DeMint Drives Conservative Directon on Debt & Deficit (A True Patriot!)
The Blaze ^ | Scott Baker

Posted on 07/30/2011 7:36:57 PM PDT by broken_arrow1

WASHINGTON (AP) — He calls himself Sen. Tea Party.

That almost says it all about Sen. Jim DeMint‘s role on the nation’s political scene in these nervous days of debt limit warfare and pre-election posturing.

But unlike the fractious movement as a whole, DeMint is specific and focused on what change, exactly, he wants: passage — not just a vote — of a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. Without it, he says, no consideration should be given to raising the nation’s borrowing limit. Even, he says, if the country runs out of money for paying all its bills after Aug. 2.

The larger problem for DeMint is the government’s $14.3 trillion debt, the equivalent of $46,580 for every man, woman and child in the U.S.

“That is the threat, not a debt ceiling, but the debt,” the South Carolina senator told a tea party audience this week at a Capitol Hill rally.

DeMint’s preference for conservative principles over compromise — and his success last year getting tea partyers nominated over some GOP party favorites in last year’s elections — have vexed Republican leaders. Some in the GOP complained that while DeMint’s activities may have won like-minded conservatives several seats in Congress, they also enabled Democrats to keep some vulnerable seats and maintain their majority.

His insistence on a balanced-budget amendment as part of any debt deal was the inspiration for several House Republicans — some of them also from South Carolina — to force Speaker John Boehner to pull his own debt-ceiling proposal and amend it to their liking so it could win passage in the House Friday evening. Within two hours, the Senate rejected it. Six Republicans joined all of the majority Democrats in doing it.

Only in government is it a bright idea to raise the credit limit when the entity becomes even more insolvant.

This is the bottom line difference between a sane caring person over finances and survival, and some irresponsible investor on drugs... err... I meant government.

You’re way out of line. The men you reference risked their lives to birth this country. DeMint has risked nothing. By putting DeMint on the same level of the Founding Fathers you diminish their accomplishment. It’s like calling the people who died on 9-11 heroes. They were not. They were tragic victims—nothing more. I’m tired of people being placed on platforms they have not earned.

It matters not what DeMint says. It matters what he’s actually done, is doing and will do. Aside from words, what has DeMint done to earn the genuine conservative label?

Again, the GOP is more interested in being like the cool boy good look tyrant in power, wanting to be part of the club feeling immune from Naziesque fiscal attrocities, instead of looking at reality.

This is political short sightedness, because these idiots still cannot figure the "read my lips" trap they are setting for themselves. Democrates want them to be blamed, in the future, for being part of it, mark my words.

I dunno, the media is out to hang anyone threatening the immunity of the man-child in charge.

It’s the whole menagerie of the sort of judges, politicians and cops in America that which wants its tyrant tenure of “too big to fail” maintained, over the rest of us, joining that cool kid club immune from criticism.

The laws of murdering are virtualy in the books as we speak.

I guestimated it was about $160k for the average family a while ago.

We have every reason to hold the DC tax and spenders in contempt.

Washington, Jefferson and Adams would likely have called DeMint onto the field of honor for a duel if they didn't outright call for a charge of treason. The idea that the constitution needs to be amended to require congress to act responsibly in making appropriations would be completely and utterly alien to any of the founding fathers.

Borrowing for a war is understandable. Borrowing to give that money to others as a gift would outright horrify them.

Congress needs no such rule to do their job. And every single one who fails to do their job should have the common courtesy to resign their positions to open the seat for people who will treat the public’s money as being the precious hard earned dollars that they are.

Unfortunately for you, there's something called reality. Congress most definitely needs such a rule to do their job. Considering the fact that there isn't one is what has us in this problem in the first place.

Also, if you want people to understand you, please stop using such archaic terms as 'common courtesy'. Especially relating to the government.

Reality is the place where people live and spend at least conceivably within their budgets. They do not year after year spend 33% more than their income and then decide, at about the third year, that gosh, there should be a law telling them that this is a stupid idea and don't do it.

There are valid reasons for the government to borrow money, and this has been the case for the entire existence of the United States. Only in the 1830's did we reach our low watermark of around 35,000 dollars in debt. We have expenses that it makes sense to pay over time, and we do that. A balanced budget amendment would not trump this prerogative of congress to authorize borrowing for the national need, only make it open season to create new and complicated taxes to further destroy our economy.

Reality does not change when a toddler throws a crying fit in the store. His want and desire is that candy or treat. Making a rule saying that toddlers can't buy candy bars won't fix that problem.

Look, we haven’t seen heroes in DC for decades and whether you like it or not someone sticking to principles over politics and business as usual works for me as heroic, given the era we’re in of cave in, corruption and fiscal collapse. BTW, which bot are you?

DeMint is a thorn in the side of the RINO republican establishment as well as the Democrat socialist machine. He has started and maintained the Senate Conservatives Fund, which I have donated to previously in 2010, and plan on supporting again in 2012.

Although DeMint may have some prior political baggage, he also has regret and now expresses a conservative epiphany - which most others in the party have never had. He brought us the likes of Rand Paul, another true patriot, who has only America's best interests at heart.

I absolutely don't like Romney or Huckabee, and because of Perry's past affiliation as a former democrat, I think he may have some political baggage.

Perry may not have been the best conservative at times, but he has done little harm here in Texas, which is a big plus. I would vote for Perry if he is the Republican candidate in 2012, but prefer Michelle Bachmann or Sarah Palin, or any other true conservative (not Huckster).

Otherwise, if Romney is the 2012 RNC candidate, I would be forced to vote 3rd party write-in. Even if Obama is leading, I absolutely will NOT vote for Mitt Romney, which is the same flavor of BS as McCain was in 2008.

- Just who do you endorse?

-- Congress needs no such rule to do their job. --

If it had a rule, it would not follow it. It fails to abide by the constitution on an everyday basis.

See too 31 USC 1103.

Sec. 1103. Budget ceiling

Congress reaffirms its commitment that budget outlays of the United States Government for a fiscal year may be not more than the receipts of the Government for that year.

The only laws that Congress follows are the laws of physics. At some point, the financial house of cards that Congress has created will come crashing down.

I don’t spend a lot of time buying or reading political books. My favorite was Mark Levin’s (I have a signed copy). But I think I’ll buy Jim’s book. He’s MY senator (I’m in SC) and it seems like something I should have on my book shelf beside Mark’s book.
