Perry tells NH no to border fence

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

No, they don’t work. That’s the false political rhetoric that you’ve swallowed - it’s the false conservatives’ alternative to the Obama koolaid; the only difference is the color.

I actually don't like the fence myself. Something totalitarian feeling about it. It also would be probably devastating to wild life down there to be cut off from the river too.

If a candidate mentioned those things but said he was willing to quadruple the border patrol and ICE,set up hundreds of dedicated immigration courts for speedy deportations, and build enough detention centers to hold 10,000 at a time, and pay for it by taking from the Dept of Ed, Energy, HHS, and EPA budgets, then I'd vote for him.

But Perry's not saying that because he doesn't oppose the fence because it's a fence. He opposes it because he's a typical globalist, open border type.

Well me too. I was referring to the map, not to anyone’s skin color. Tan equated to fewer illegals, red to more.

“Feds say immigrants using torches and bungee cords on border fence”

COLUMBUS, N.M. — Illegal immigrants armed with torches, hacksaws, ladders and bungee cords are making it around a section of the border fence hailed as the most efficient way to stop them.

In the 10 months since the section was put up, the only method federal agents haven’t seen is a tunnel — “Yet,” said Victor Guzman, the supervisory Border Patrol agent responsible for the stretch of close-together 15-foot cement-filled steel poles planted 3 feet into the ground.

Agents responsible for guarding the stretch of border in Columbus “almost immediately” started seeing cuts in the fence. The towering gray-and-rust-colored posts are marked with bright-orange spray paint in areas believed to have been breached, Guzman said.

Guzman, who has worked in the area for nearly a decade, said agents have found holes cut with acetylene torches, hacksaws and plasma torches, a high-powered tool that uses inert gas or condensed air to quickly cut through steel and other dense metals.

“We see it once or twice a week,” Guzman said of the holes along the 1.5-mile stretch of fencing about 80 miles west of El Paso, Texas.

Officials monitoring cameras in the area have seen at least one group using a massive ladder to scale the south side of the fence. The group tried to drop into the United States with bungee cords before agents caught them.

But it’s not just illegal immigrants worrying the Border Patrol. The fence is starting to settle into the ground and gaps between the posts are widening. In one spot, an average-size woman could wedge herself through one of the gaps.................

The open borders crowd will happily and knowingly lie just to keep the argument going. The longer the argument goes on, the longer nothing is done.

Like all RINOs, they’re nothing but lying manipulative, bottom feeding, scum, completely unworthy of respect.

The old liberal standby.

Fences? Yes, in our time the totalitarian aspect of fences was done by leftists.

I'm not willing to see an animal eco-system as large as South Western Texas decimated by being cut off from water when shooting a few dozen Mexicans can serve the same purpose as a fence.

Guess we're racist as well.

Yeah, because my posting history shows me to be so sensitive to racial issues.

But it's all pie in the sky. A government willing to build the fence would be willing to put thousands of guards on the border without the fence in the first place and then we wouldn't be having discussions about fences.

The problem is that every powerful institution in the US wants mass immigration here. The FED churns out papers in favor of it, the corporations, the politicians, the bureaucracy all want mass immigration. It's been this way since the first large wave of immigration since the 1840s.

The regular people have always been against it for the most part. They opposed the waves of Irish. They were ignored. They opposed the waves of Asians, they were heeded for a while then ignored. They were opposed to the waves of Southern and Eastern European immigration and they were ignored until 1924. Then the flood gates were opened in '65.

We've have 41 years total of sane immigration restriction in this country.

We have a deeper problem than fences. It's elite attitudes toward migration.

They build a fence one day, and the next year the state department will hand out another million B2 visitor visas. You'll wipe out the West Texas wildlife refuges and still get the Mexicans.

This country has never been good at nationalism.

Can you imagine what all these ‘border-crossers’ are costing US taxpayers?

PEDRO'S MULTIPLE IDENTITIES RIDE THE US GRAVY TRAIN An illegal alien w/ wife and five children violates our borders. He gets a job mowing lawns for $5.00 or 6.00/hour. At that low wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax, so each year, he files an Income Tax Return to get "EITC---earned income credit" of up to $3,200 scot-free. He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent. He qualifies for food stamps and no deductible, no co-pay free health care. His children get free school breakfasts and lunches. The kids qualify for monthly SSI checks, faking ADD; the illegal and his wife get SSI if they fake being aged, blind or disabled; SSI qualifies them for Medicare. Plus illegals don't worry about pricey items like car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance, and qualifies for relief from high energy bills.

Earned Income Tax Credit (meant for low-income US workers) is available to immigrants who obtain legal work status. But the law allows immigrants to claim EITC for up to three years prior to obtaining that status. Workers simply file a tax return for the years in which they were not legally eligible to work in the US. The most widespread abuse stems from the requirement that children live with the worker for more than six months of the year. IRS does little to verify the claim. Many immigrants claim non-existent children, or claim children who they’ve left behind with relatives. Those with two or more children and income below $32,121 could get as much as $4,008. It is estimated that illegals got $22 billion EITC refunds.

All of that is collected with one identity. Evidence shows "impoverished" illegals buy fake documents for several thousand dollars to establish multiple identities.....all cashing govt checks....all of them voting.

Illegal Jose Madrigal, the Washington state rapist, had some 30 identities.

Given the way the argument has gone so far, it won’t be long before someone declares that an American would have committed the crime if Pedro hadn’t.

Apparently we’re supposed to forget the old open borders arguments and act like they’re new ones.

Haven't you heard? Perry will lead us like lambs to a new immigration policy......

Golly, Senor Ricardo might even get a monogrammed sombrero to match the monogrammed serape Mexico gave him.

Senor El Perrynista receives a monogrammed serape from Coahuila Gov Enrique
Martinez as a token of appreciation for enacting the Texican Dream Act
(tax dollar giveaways to illegals).

=======================================

REFERENCE Perry signed on to McCain/Kennedy amnesty as early as 2006.

The ‘Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006’ is clearly pro-amnesty.......states that it sought to ‘allow long-time illegal immigrants to gain legal status’. Perry and other border state governors, two Dem liberals and RINO Arnold "You Gonna Haf my Kid" Schwarzenegger, signed a letter asking Congress to pass it.

Making life in America very uncomfortable and difficult for illegals? No welfare, food stamps, healthcare and, most importantly, no jobs.

Enforcing those provisions will cost a LOT more than a fence. Further, the process for distinguishing illegals will make life more difficult for Americans. Finally, there is an incredibly effective means already available: A bounty system, with heavy penalties for false arrest. Between a fence and a bounty system, illegals would be gone within two years. Oh, and while we are at it, have the military promise to shoot any plane, boat or vehicle crossing the border without authorization.

I'm damned tired of using illegal drugs to allow the Fed to keep printing cash.

The title of the article is, not surprisingly, misleading. Perry's for "strategic fencing" where it makes sense. Specifically he cites its effectiveness near metropolitan areas but that's not all he's for nor all he's done.

There is no fence now. Let's see how a fence works then we'll get back to you.

What do you mean there's no fence now?

There's more than 100 miles of double fence. And you know what? It's only somewhat effective. Perry knows this. Anyone living near the border state knows this.

A fence for fencing's sake for the whole 1,900 miles across mountains, deserts and waterways make sense as a union boosting make work project and as a black hole of federal funding.

In 2007, the price tag for just 700 miles was placed at $50 billion excluding both labor and land acquisition costs. CRS 2007 numbers)

I'm in San Diego where we have the double-fence. It has been helpful but it's no magic bullet and that's Perry's point.

On top of those still climbing the fence, we have sophisticated tunnels pop up: tunnels with electricity, air conditioning, even rail cars. Here's an example in Nogales a couple weeks ago.

Speaking of the fence in San Diego, it took forever to get it across an area called "Smuggler's Gulch" because of "habitat" environmental battles! I suspect under Perry or any of the EPA-critical candidates, such obstructions and delays would be sharply reduced or eliminated.

Using federal funds to achieve the best bang for the buck on border control is responsible.

If it's a fence, it's a fence. If it's drones, choppers and spotter planes, it's those things. If it's boots on the ground, it's boots. That seems to be Perry's philosophy: use the best tools for the task.

Remember, it's all academic if we don't have the right Congress. Congress has to authorize the funds. Congress has to authorize the fencing. Congress has to allow exceptions to environmental law.

Perry's signed bills against human trafficking (HB 1372, 4008 & SB 11 of '07), on increased border security (Rangers on the border; HB1 of '07), for tougher employer sanctions (HB 1196 of '07), on document fraud (HB 126 of '07) and signed Voter ID. Source: http://www.txcc.org/illegal-immigration & Reuters (Voter ID signing)

The bill didn't just pass, he really did send Rangers to the border because Texas couldn't get the National Guard it asked for: Texas governor sends Rangers to Mexico border (2009) and he's called for 3,000 more border patrol on the Texas-Mexico border and another 1,000 from El Paso west to San Diego.

He's also mentioned aerial assets on the border:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says Predator drones should patrol Texas border (2010)

On the Mark Levin Show last week, Perry repeatedly opposed the federal Dream Act as amnesty while defending Texas' right to have an in-state tuition program which he said requires 3 years residency, graduation from a Texas high school and being on the path to citizenship.

As you all look through the list on your purity tests, ask yourselves, what other candidate is running with a long record and actual action on immigration/border issues? Romney? Bachmann? Palin?

About a week ago, when Romney was in NH for a town hall, he said he's for a fence, employer sanctions and against in-state tuition. The question was about illegals already here which he dodged. Does anyone believe Romney's to the right of Perry?

What about Sarah Palin? She says she's for a complete fence and supported SB 1070 but what did she do in Alaska? She didn't tackle sanctuary cities, like Fairbanks, in her own state.

For those who say Perry's for amnesty because he's consistently supported a 24 month guest worker program requiring taxes paid and no citizenship offered then Palin's for amnesty. Not just because she supported McCain's policies in 2008 but because in 2010 told O'Reilly she's for a guest worker program for all 12 million illegals.

Numbers USA gives only Bachmann a B-, Cain a C- and the other candidates, including Palin, a D or worse.

That means the ones with the best "immigration" policy from Numbers USA's view, Bachmann & Cain, will be candidates you must take on faith. Neither have an executive record on immigration (or other issues) to back up their campaign rhetoric.

One more time ~ Perry has a very consistent policy that favors interests with an interest in Mexicans over interests with an interest in Americans.

This is also consistent with "crony capitalism" ~ it's something of which its time has come AND GONE!

We don't want a pathway to citizenship ~ that already exists, and we don't care if Mexicans get educations, but without a student visa, it's pretty clear they're not doing it legitimately. BTW, other foreign students, particularly those from Mexico, are required to obtain medical insurance inside the United States BEFORE THEY ARRIVE.

If Texans want to spend money on these people give them a scholarship to a university IN Mexico.

You really, really need to take a course in basic logic. I spend my days fighting the federal and NYS governments to protect individuals and small businesses from the depredations of the IRS and the DTF. Go figure.
