Bachmann's Vaccine Panic
gastongazette.com ^ | 9/18/2011 | Steve Chapman

Cancer treatment has made great progress in recent decades, but the tragedy is that so much of our effort to combat this scourge is just that: treatment. Once a disease appears, there is only so much that can be done. It would be far cheaper, more effective and less traumatic to prevent it.

A vaccine for cancer would be a triumph for public health. Did I say “would be”? Actually, it is. Such a vaccine exists for one of the biggest killers of women. But Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is against it, and she’s not alone.

Two different vaccines block transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes 70 percent of all cervical cancer in this country, as well as most anal cancers and some cancers of the throat, vagina and penis.

Each year, says the National Cancer Institute, more than 12,000 American women are diagnosed with cervical cancer alone, and some 4,000 will die of it. That’s not counting the genital warts HPV can cause.

It’s a nasty but very common bug that the world would be better off without. Universal inoculation would be a huge step toward eradicating it and the suffering it causes.

But there is a big impediment to its use: HPV is sexually transmitted, which makes the vaccine controversial — especially because to achieve maximum effectiveness, it has to be administered before the recipient becomes sexually active. And in this country, 6 percent of youngsters have sex by the age of 13.

That’s what I was thinking. The reaction to cancer is probably worse.......

She was an IRS “attack” lawyer, or so I’ve read. If so, destroying lives means nothing at all to her. Is this true that is what she was? Just wondering if I heard the truth.

Who's forcing anybody to anything?

Except, well, to get polio vaccines and smallpox vaccines etc.

From 1988 to 1993, she was an attorney working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Those aren't mandatory either, in the sense that every state has opt-out for all so-called "mandatory" vaccines.

It’s going to turn on her, if Bachman keeps pushing it. Time for her to start (back) in on foreign policy, economy, etc.

fYI, I have no dog in this race.....yet. Bachman needs to be careful not to lose my support by seeming shrill.

You come across as a 'Tammy Bruce conservative'. Sorry, but you people don't get to decide who is conservative, who is ethical. First, you wouldn't know the meaning of the two words, second, your heads are so far up Palin's arse you're totally oblivious to the real world.

Put simply, so even you will understand: Bachmann LIED.

Withhold judgement on Palin please. It’s not quite accurate to say that she isn’t running

The same mentality that says it’s appropriate to start putting up Christmas decorations on Nov 1 is responsible for candidates feeling compelled to announce years ahead of the elections.

I would love there to be a candidate with as much fire as Palin to be apparent already but none seem to be.

So much for personal attacks being bad, lol!

Yes, I’m a a Tammy Bruce LESBIAN - isn’t that what you are really trying to say? Or are you afraid that if you do say it, I will push the abuse button? I won’t, don’t worry.

I don’t believe for a second that Bachmann lied. Having been to debates and rallies I know how people come up to the candidate, shake their hand and offer their own personal experiences. I’ve done it myself.

The sad fact is, I don’t even support MB for President - although I like her very much. I simply defend her as a good Conservative woman against the truly vicious Perry supporters.

Beleive hearsay MSM newspaper articles and TV reports are YOUR own risk, my anti-Perry FRiend. None is scientific evidence of the Gardisil link you and the falling Ms. Bachmann so want to find.

Having asked this question of many of the more rabid Bachnuts, none of which have been able to deny (except one), did you or did you not have your children vaccinated to enable them to attend school?

This is hilarious. Thanks for posting it!

However I doubt this issue will have much effect on Perry’s campaign for President.

Bachmann has screwed up the issue royally. And Mitt Romneycare is jealous that he didn’t think of this first. If he had he surely would’ve put HPV vaccinations into Romneycare!

Bachmann most assuredly did lie about this issue. It is clear and present in the transcript from the debate. Bachmann spoke about the “innocent girls who were affected” by Perry’s executive order.

The only problem: that executive order never went into effect.

So Bachmann lied by omission.

Wait a minute, she is running for the top job in the US. If we can’t discuss what appears to be a pattern of lying or manipulating data for political gain then this board would be useless.

This isn’t American Idol where the various fan groups attack each other to help their favorite out or run all over the internet “protecting and defending” their candidate. That is so juvenile. This is about electing someone who will make decisions that affect all of us. If she can’t be trusted to use good judgment in this area how in heck do we trust her with the big decisions?

She’s got some real issues of not being able to take the advice of her advisers which might explain why she goes through so many.

As of this minute she’s not in the race and she’s still a paid employee of Fox News.

Do I think we need to not allow antibiotics to be administered?

No but neither do I think antibiotics be MANDATED by the government.

Medical treatment should be between you and your doctor. The risks vs benefits explained (informed consent).

There have been people who have died on the operating table while having tonsils removed

The patient or guardian had to sign informed consent to the procedure after the risks vs benefits were explained. This is an excellent example of the individual hiring a Doctor and personally agreeing to treatment. No government mandate and your health is your personal private business.

Gardisil is different because the government mandates that you have to have it. The Doctor is now an agent of the government not your personal consultant. The Doctor has no incentive to individualize patient care. In fact the Doctor because he depends on government for his license actually now has a conflict of interest when it comes to explaining why you need the vaccine.

This is typical of the vaccine debate both sides polarize the issue. But the fact remains that Perry has no problem with government mandates the only issue seems to be whether someone can make a good enough argument. This is why we have TARP, Quantitative easing, it's why we are in the foreclosure mess. It seems that Perry has a low barrier to forcing people to do things against their will. So how many government regulations will he agree to because it 'benefits society'. Isn't that why the EPA is choking our economy right now? Isn't that why Obama dumped 500 million into a solar company with no chance of succeeding? Isn't that why we will print money to prop up Europe?

Government is the opiate of the masses. We think have the government do it and it will fix everything.

If that were true then Obama would be the greatest president ever rather than the worst.

The problem with Perry is that he sees government as a solution to a problem so where is the difference between him and Obama. Unless it's I get a liberal government that let's me keep my gun?

.....If she can’t be trusted to use good judgment .....

Judgement? judgement?

She had no rational thought in the effort. She was ruled by emotion, by fear, by feelings. She is shown to be unfit to lead

"She lied" might be technically correct, but here is the transcript, in case anybody wants to discern the point she is attempting to make.
BACHMANN: I'm a mom. And I'm a mom of three children. And to have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong. That should never be done. It's a violation of a liberty interest. That's -- little girls who have a negative reaction to this potentially dangerous drug don't get a mulligan. They don't get a do- over. The parents don't get a do-over. That's why I fought so hard in Washington, D.C., against President Obama and Obamacare. President Obama in a stunning, shocking level of power now just recently told all private insurance companies, you must offer the morning-after abortion pill, because I said so. And it must be free of charge. That same level coming through executive orders and through government dictates is wrong. And that's why again we have to have someone who is absolutely committed to the repeal of Obamacare and I am. I won't rest until it's appealed.

BLITZER: Let's let Governor Perry respond. Was what you signed into law, that vaccine for 11 and 12-year-old girls, was that,as some of your critics have suggested, a mandate?

PERRY: No, sir it wasn't. It was very clear. It had an opt-out. And at the end of the day, this was about trying to stop a cancer and giving the parental option to opt out of that.

Query. Was Perry's statement "No, sir it wasn't [mandatory]. It was very clear. It had an opt-out." a lie? Misleading by omission?
