CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Five bikers were found dead Sunday in a recreational vehicle at a Tennessee speedway and a festival organizer said fumes from a generator were to blame.
Three men and two women were found in the RV at the Clarksville Speedway about noon and there was no sign of foul play, Clarksville police spokesman Jim Knoll said.The head of Bikers Who Care, the charity that organized the event, said he heard someone shouting that all of the people in the trailer were dead. The event festivities came to an abrupt halt as ambulances arrived.
"This is a tragic accident," Bill Langford said. "It's horrible."
Langford said the bikers' group was like a close-knit family and he knew the people who had died. He identified them as a married couple who had 8-month-old twins. He was a truck driver and she was a school teacher.
The others who died were another couple and a man who worked with one of the men. All were from the Clarksville area about 40 miles northwest of Nashville.

a few years ago, we lost our power....we had a young family visiting and they slept downstairs and it was very humid and hot....so we set up the generator just outside so we could run a big fan for them....
but I couldn't rest....I told my husband that I was afraid that fumes would be created downstairs where this family with 3 little kids were staying so we marched downstairs and had to turn the fan off and the generator....it was sweltering but at least no one was hurt...

For us non RV owners what makes the generator so likely to create fumes inside other than improper or faulty ventilation? Please share more on this topic—anyone!
No motorcycle. They have this event every year on the third weekend in September.

Carbon Monoxide is a sneaky killer.
So sad. We used to have a camping trailer with a heater, that ran off propane. We always kept the sliding window on the door slightly open just so fumes wouldn’t have the chance to build up.
I recall a year or two ago that a guy died inside a TENT while using some kind of propane heater....

Thing is, she's usually right to worry.
Don’t gasoline powered generators make a racket similar to a lawn mower? With only minimal muffling? So it can’t be too close to a habitable area anyhow.
Putting it under the trailer (like to shelter it from rain) would be asking for trouble.
Always a good idea to use carbon monoxide detectors indoors if there is any fear of penetration of fumes. The detector (working properly, with good batteries) will catch the situation and sound its alarm well before the concentration of monoxide fumes is enough to kill. But unlike a smoke detector you can’t just shut it off and wait and see if there is any noticeable sign of fire. You have to act quickly to avoid being poisoned.
Some propane and kerosene heaters are made to achieve complete enough combustion that the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is very little. Some have their own monoxide detectors and will shut off if excessive monoxide accumulates.
I wouldn’t know specifically, but there was a couple that died this way several years back at the local Vietnam Veteran reunion here.
I would have to go with the ventillation though. Old camper furnaces could rust out, mouse nests in vents....
