For twenty years long before 9/11 the danger of terrorists armed with surface to air missiles shooting at passenger planes has been the secret fear of many top political leaders. In the late 90s, a terrorist network was nabbed trying to bring them into Newark Airport, but the airline industry and the government have done nothing to equip passenger airplanes with any defense against these always deadly missiles.
Now Barack Obama has committed the ultimate sin: He has let 20,000 surface-to-air missiles escape from military depots in Libya. According to ABC News U.S. officials had once thought there was little chance that terrorists could get their hands on many of the portable surface-to-air missiles that can bring down a commercial jet liner. But now that calculation is out the window, with officials at a recent secret White House meeting reporting that thousands of them have gone missing in Libya. An estimated 20,000 of these portable, heat-seeking missiles have gone missing from unguarded Army weapons warehouses.
Senator Barbara Boxer, of the Senates Commerce, Energy, and Transportation Committee said that matching up a terrorist with a shoulder-fired missile, thats our worst nightmare.
And now, thanks to Obamas carelessness and his unnecessary decision to intervene in Libya, it may be our future reality.
ABC News describes the missing missiles as four to six-feet long and Russian-made, [they] can weight just 55 pounds with launcher. They are accurate within a range of more than two miles. That a terrorist could sit on a boat off JFK airport and shoot down a passenger plane as it ascends could now be a real possibility.
In the Iraq War, during the run-up to the 2004 election, there were reports of unguarded US military depots from which insurgents allegedly stole thousands of explosives. The story broke in the week before the election and Kerry took down all his other ads and focused on this issue, first reported in the New York Times. By Election Day, it was proven that the report was bogus, adding to Kerrys woes. Now, faced with this massive blunder and security threat, we hear nothing but the sounds of silence from any of the mainstream media except, to its immense credit, ABC News.
We need to assign a top priority to hunting down these missiles. In Afghanistan, our troops jumped through hoops to corral all the Stinger Missiles left over from the Russian War. This potential leak of these dangerous weapons is vastly more threatening. Obama needs to face this issue squarely and publicly. And we all need to learn the cost we may pay from having elected a rank amateur as president
The missiles the Russians said they sold were were Strela type, and can be sold as vehicle launch and manpad. The claim I heard was that the Strela missiles that were sold were not manpad versions, but vehicle launch. That goes along with the arsenal that Libya keeps.
I don't think manpad missiles would be a good deal for Libyan troops. The units that would have training to use them are too valuable to use for AA duties. They could use much more effective ZSU-23 AAA or Gecko firing SA-8 missiles for air defense.
As far as ordinance, 20k missiles is not a big deal. New ZSU variants have Strela launchers.
Manpad missiles have been in circulation from the 1970s. No US commercial aircraft has even been reported as shot down, even though the claim has been made and denied.
Time for some critical thinking. If they had operational, portable SAMs, they would have used them against NATO.
My thoughts exactly. If they had 20,000 of these things there would have been at least a few NATO planes hit.
I was speaking in terms of the concept and not the exact application. Don't be condescendent, at least not on purpose.
Not that gadfly gadaffi is a rational man, but why would he have 20,000 MANPADS? I think he was more worried about rebellion than he was about lowlevel airplane and helicopter attacks. 20,000 would be a waste of resources. I’m guessing that our government knows a few missiles got away. All that yammering the Democrats did about Iraq could come back to haunt them. This way, they can lie and say, “Yeah, but there was so many missiles. I mean who could keep track of 20,000 of them?”
Pity no one got a clue after the Lockerbie bomber deal.....
In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way. Franklin D. Roosevelt
Those who have eyes can see what is happening. Herman Cain sees it. He has our vote, too. Even if we have to write his name on the ballot. I know that is supposed to be counted as a vote for the opposition but we are making our stand. We are on the side of Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
>>> IIRC, the US CIC only controls US military depots. Or so I thought. <<<
If you’re going to attack a country to facilitate regime change, you’d damn well better have a plan to secure or destroy their military stores to prevent them from getting into the wrong hands.
If this report is true, then Barry owns it!
No one could screw up everything this badly by accident. No one is that inept. A child could do better.
He's now armed the terrorist with everything they need, as well as arming the criminal enterprises on our southern boarder. Iran is sending war ships to our eastern coast. He's surrounding us with our enemies, while weakening us from within.
This mans hate for Americans has no end!
Well, it's the only way to stop Republicans from taking over in a landslide in 2012. Even now, democrats are trying to come up with a way to stop it. Politically, they can't.
SC suggesting - suspend elections due to national emergency (using jobs as an excuse, but something bigger just might work!)
If it happens - we know it was no accident. He's surrounding the U.S with enemies, and the MSM is protecting him while he does it. The democrats are eerily silent about it all.
Which could explain why Gore blatantly tried to steal the 2000 election. I can't help but believe they knew it was coming, but didn't alert Bush hoping he'd panic screw it up. They stopped him from entering the White House as long as they could, hoping it would happen before he actually got in the door. Clinton would have had to stay - "for the sake of the American people."
The left was wayyyyy too depressed because it didn't happen on their watch. For me, that was a flag. It wasn't about the victims - it was about them politically.
OCTOBER 2004 late : (LEAK ABOUT 380 TONS OF MISSING HIGH EXPLOSIVES FROM IRAQ’S AL-QAQAA FACILITY WAS THE WORK OF THE IAEA’S MOHAMMAD EL BARADEI {see EGYPT}, WHO SOUGHT TO HELP THE JOHN KERRY PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN-— See IAEA CHIEF MONITOR MOHAMMED ABBAS)———————————”INSIDE THE RING : THE GERTZ FILE: Notes from the Pentagon,” October 29, 2004 http://www.gertzfile.com/gertzfile/ring102904.html
Well , then they can blame it on algore , because he supposedly fixed that problem .
The entire Libyan campaign was a poorly thought out distraction of a dictator we had under our thumb. Now we’ll get jihadists with oil and missiles.
Thanks to President Obumble.
Ahhh. The smell of a Muslim spring.
I've always thought Oboma was out to finish the job his muslim brothers failed to do on 9/11 - he's "destroying wonderfully."
I recall an attack on an Israeli airliner in Kenya a while back using the things. Also, there was an attempt against a US military aircraft in Saudi Arabia. Terrorists do get ahold of them from time to time.
More Gunwalker?
SEAL Team Six? It would have been an awfully lucky shot with an RPG, but an easy one with a SAM.
Strela is not effective against fighter jets flying higher than 6000ft ceiling. We do not know how many were fired against choppers or surface targets.
According to some reports, good news is that looters forgot to take batteries rendering missiles useless. I'd look for those who want to buy batteries for them.
It bears repeating, so I did!
Scarier still.... are we opening a new chapter in the "Big Black book of Communism" ? Tyrants have been willing to go to extremes to stay in power. And almost without exception, their plans included many elements put in place for "the good of the masses".
