Poll: Rick Perry loses the tea party
Politico ^ | 10-04-11 | Alexander Burns

The new Washington Post/ABC News poll confirms what the Florida straw poll showed last month: Rick Perry is bleeding support from activist conservatives.

In the national survey, Perry’s share of the GOP primary vote has fallen to 16 percent – a tie with Herman Cain and 9 points behind Mitt Romney, who draws support from a quarter of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Continue Reading

Ron Paul is in fourth place, with 11 percent, followed by Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich tied at 7 percent. Rick Santorum takes 2 percent and Jon Huntsman takes half that.

The apparent explanation for Perry’s decline is what you would expect: immigration and debates. Dan Balz and Jon Cohen:

Perry’s support for the Texas policy of providing in-state tuition to the children of illegal immigrants appears to be a significant problem in the GOP race. About two-thirds of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents say they are less likely to vote for a candidate who backs such a policy. Among tea party supporters, nearly eight in 10 say this position is a negative factor. …

In early September, Perry had a 3-to-1 advantage over any other candidate among those “strongly” backing the tea party, but his supported has plummeted from 45 percent to 10 percent in this group.

While I believe the law is wrong there really is no cost to the law. Tuition could be the same for in-state and out-of-state, it is an artifical price increase. So it does not cost anything in money.

More importantly allowing an illeagal in does reduce the number allowed at the school, so it actually takes a slot away from someone most likely a US citizen.

This is the real problem with the law.

They don’t get a reduced tuition from anyone else! They live in the state and they pay the same as the rest of the students who live in the state. When Texas students go to Princeton, Yale, Harvard, etc., they pay out of state tuition. If illegals living in Texas go to those same schools they would, also.

Interesting. He hasn’t lost this Tea Party supporter, or my Tea Party supporting family. Actually, in the last month, he’s picked up votes amoung my family and friends-coworkers. That’s odd.

He never ‘lost’ me. He never had me to begin with.

Neither does Romney/Obamney.

All of these people who are supporting Romney on here need to remember that he probably can’t beat Obama in the general and their support will help to ensure the completion of the Ayers/Soros agenda

Actually all of the people supporting Perry on here need to realize that Perry's demonstrated incompetence as a National Election campaigner pretty much guarantee he would self destruct in Oct 2012 thus handing the 2012 election to 0.

It easy to win in Texas with an R next to your name. It is a whole lot hard to run nation wide. Perry simply is not ready to run nationally.

Rather continue to worship the cult of Perry, Freepers better wake up to the fact that Perry is DOA. Continuing to back him to the last bitter ditch like some of you are is what is helping Romney.

Quit blaming everyone else for Perry's incompetence as a campaigner. Wake up and face the facts.

That’s exactly what this is - just the way they sneaked McCain in the backdoor last time.

If you knew what you were talking about instead of having typical knee-jerk reactions, you'd know that I don't worship at anyone's "cult." I've been supportive of a few of the candidates here.

My big thing is "Anyone but Romney." (Or Ron Paul, but he doesn't have a chance, thank goodness.)

But for those of you who support Romney, I really have no respect. Perhaps you should pull out of his cult and take a closer look at things.

I liked him at first also. He lost me at the outbreak of his in-state stance and then abandoned me at “heartless”....

Right now, I don’t have a dog in this race. One or two potentials, but they just might screw up like Perry. Romney and Paul are definitely out. Cain was up, but now I’m wondering. I wish Bachmann were doing better....will just have to wait and see how things go.

I do know however, there are four candidates I won’t vote for: Romeny, Paul, the liberal plant Huntsman, and now Perry.

I would be very surprised if the Texas Colleges and Universities do not get any Federal Tax dollars at all. Similar to that for K-12 that localities get. Very surprised. So this isn't a 'no harm - no cost' law. It is another tax and a disregard for immigration law.

a disregard for immigration law yes and as my post said it takes away college opportunities from others to the benifit of illeagals. But the feds pay by number of students not where they are from.

Perry is Romney Lite. He merely reflects a different facet of the same corrupt GOP Establishment. Perry is the Fiscal Moderate/Social Conservative wing ala Bush while Romney is the Liberal wing ala McCain/Dole. Different sides of the same old coin.

If writing comments critical of this or that candidate on here could destroy a political figure both 0 and Romney would be toast right now.

Perry took down Perry. NO one is to blame for his implosion but himself.

You can go around insulting the people who don’t agree with you all day, but your Ron Paul is never going to win the nomination.

MNJohnnie,

You're not seeing the forest for the trees. Unless Cain can continue his climb to the top and bump Romney out of the lead (and raise more money than Romney or Perry) ---

We're gonna nominate Mitt Romney with these tactics.

I would rather have Perry, Cain, Bachmann, or Santorum.

You can hate on Perry all you want, just be mindful of the result. Then again you may be a Romney supporter for all we know. You've never said.

You also said Perry cannot run a national campaign.

That's almost laughable. Where you and others are mistaken, is that Perry is probably the BEST campaigner on the trail. He can fire up supporters and raise money second to no one.

His area of weakness is in debates. But debates are much different than being on the road with your sleeves rolled up, raising money and gaining support.

This is where you have it wrong, and fall just short of lying about the matter. And you're clearly in someone else's hip pocket and smearing Perry every opportunity you can get because he threatens your darling candidate - whoever that is.
