Poll: Rick Perry loses the tea party
Politico ^ | 10-04-11 | Alexander Burns

The new Washington Post/ABC News poll confirms what the Florida straw poll showed last month: Rick Perry is bleeding support from activist conservatives.

In the national survey, Perry’s share of the GOP primary vote has fallen to 16 percent – a tie with Herman Cain and 9 points behind Mitt Romney, who draws support from a quarter of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Continue Reading

Ron Paul is in fourth place, with 11 percent, followed by Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich tied at 7 percent. Rick Santorum takes 2 percent and Jon Huntsman takes half that.

The apparent explanation for Perry’s decline is what you would expect: immigration and debates. Dan Balz and Jon Cohen:

Perry’s support for the Texas policy of providing in-state tuition to the children of illegal immigrants appears to be a significant problem in the GOP race. About two-thirds of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents say they are less likely to vote for a candidate who backs such a policy. Among tea party supporters, nearly eight in 10 say this position is a negative factor. …

In early September, Perry had a 3-to-1 advantage over any other candidate among those “strongly” backing the tea party, but his supported has plummeted from 45 percent to 10 percent in this group.

Yes, we know that..but the illegal alien tuition thingy killed him. Calling us HEARTLESS’ was another.
Not to mention that the dufus brain embarrassed the entire State of Texas with his three Debate "performances". I stuck with him until after he blew the second Debate. After the third Debate I said this guy really is the empty-suit I've thought he was all along. Happy Trails Ricky!

Go Mitt!

Can’t wait for Mr TEA party himself to win the primaries.

(sarcasm off)

LOL, that’s why there are debates. The more issues are raised, then the more skeletons come out of the closet. I don’t seriously hate Perry like I hate Odumbo, but he fumbled the football at the 10 yard line.

So close..

Fair or not, Perry exudes a frayed, sweaty, burnt-out aura. Like he just ran several miles in his suit. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s real, esp. in front of TV cameras.

[As for] “Romney does” [look like a winner,] I didn’t say that, but some polls do. Yes, Perry has Tea Party support, but it’s on the wane. As I said in another post, I like Perry, would gladly vote for him, and he’s many times of magnitude better than the present disaster in the WH.

“Pile On Perry”

Nothing is piled on Perry. All the things that have been brought up were due to his actions. Maybe people are just mad because it was so easy. He made it that way. He hasn’t even had 5 percent of the “pile on” that Governor Palin has been through. No pity from me for sure.

I would NOT vote for Romney or Perry under any circumstance.

Ditto. I thought I could vote for Perry in the general, but no way....he is so liberal that he puts Romney to shame....I would not vote for either one of these liberals.

What do you do if Sarah decides not get in and Cain loses traction to Romney? What is your Plan B? Four more of Obama? Well, if you like what he’s done to our military and the defintion of marriage and decimation of private enterprise - he’s your man. Glad I could make you laugh because four more years of obama and we’ll all be crying.

Texas Primary is March 6th.

Couldn't pick a better day, the 175th anniversary of the final battle at the Alamo.

Contrary to what I've read on these threads, I expect Perry to still be in the race. He's being written off way too early.

Not a big fan of his, but Rick's been a decent governor, and he's a tireless campaigner.

Thanks for this. According to this chart, Bachmann is our best bet for immigration reform. She is heads and shoulders better than Perry (according to the chart).

Well last time I was “forced” to vote for McCain, but this time I refuse so I will write in one on the four candidates who I approve of and are 100 percent conservative....Bachmann, Cain, Santorum, and Palin. Any one of them would be a huge improvement over Romney and Perry. If Perry is President, we might as well have Obama. I feel the exact same way as if McCain was President. No much difference between Perry, McCain or Obama....all three are liberals. I won’t vote for another liberal again EVER.

but Rick’s been a decent governor,

So let’s just keep him in Texas if he is so good. I think he would be a disaster for the entire U.S. but Texas seems to love illegals so Perry is perfect for that state.

I saw Perry in the third debate and it was painful to watch, to say the least.

He's gonna have to raise his game significantly in order to make a contest out of it.

I hope we don't have to "settle" for Perry, although obviously any GOP candidate would be preferable to Romney, who I simply won't support.

If the GOP establishment successfully foments Romney upon conservative voters, then the Party does not deserve to win the White House, IMHO.

I'm still hoping and praying that Sarah Palin enters the race, as she is my first choice by far. Second would probably be Herman Cain. IMHO, patriotic passion, integrity, and leadership count for a lot more than political experience.

In state tuitions/out of state tuitions - someone is making up the difference. In state tuitions are subsized by someone. Is it the taxpayers of the state?
