Anita Perry, campaigning for husband Rick Perry in South Carolina, suggests he's been "brutalized" by the media and the GOP because of his faith. Perry is the most religiously expressive candidate in the Republican field. He hosted a seven-hour Christian prayer rally in August in advance of entering the presidential race. And at last week's Values Voters Summit, he was introduced by a Dallas Baptist pastor who said rival Mitt Romney is not a Christian and Mormonism is a cult.
Perry has suffered several extremely bad weeks, stumbling in the debates and losing the coveted endorsement of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who's backing Romney. Here, in emotional remarks at a South Carolina campaign stop, Anita Perry said:
"It's been a rough month. We have been brutalized and beaten up and chewed up in the press to where I need this today. We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party. So much of that is, I think, they look at him because of his faith. He is the only true conservative - well, there are some true conservatives. And they're there for good reasons. And they may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose."
Here's the full 15-minute appearance -- a remarkable, emotional address threaded with religious references in which at one point (about 3 minutes in) she nearly breaks down, then (8 minutes in) makes the comments about the brutal campaign and later recalls someone who told Perry his political troubles were a divine test: "God is testing you because he wants you to know when you're in the White House, how you got there." It was a public show of emotion, not unlike Hillary Clinton breaking down in tears

If Perry is smart hell get his wife away from the microphones. Unfortunately, he isnt.
It's brilliant actually, it's trying to redirect the conversation away from Perry's debate performances and falling numbers and back on religion. The "you don't like Rick because he's religious" strategy is much better than "you don't like Rick because of all of these other things" strategy.
Did anybody expect her to go out there and say "Rick's numbers are falling because you don't like his debate performances, his record, groups that he's addressed, comments he's made, ties he's had with people doing business with the State of Texas, etc."???

Cheesy I know, but RP has more than once said his wife would be a major influence on his healthcare policy. Been there, done that. I am tired of unelected, unaccountable spouses driving policy. Period.

How is it brilliant to go from calling your base heartless to having your wife call them bigots?

I'm not kidding when I said this was a misdirection campaign by Perry's staff -
now Perry is out there attacking the media.
Having his wife try to make his problems about religion and him trying to go back on the offensive against the media is brilliant. It's a one-two punch to try and distract people from talking about his appearances, record, and falling numbers. I don't like the guy, but I've been wondering when we'd see this side of his campaign.

Bottom line:
Perry and his campaign team/organization are NOT ready for prime time.
Perry should NOT have allowed himself to be introduced by somebody like the preacher.
His team should have anticipated the painted rock topic, and been ready with the story and the dates.
Perry’s responses and the time it takes to get them, are just not getting the job done.
And I haven’t mentioned his debates, which are another complete subject.
I hoped he’d be the real deal. But both he, and his team, are not quick or agile enough on their feet.
And his wife claiming the media is doing it to him, because he’s a Christian, doesn’t convince most onlookers. He’s the candidate.
Can you say: Fred Thompson?
Perhaps Fred’s and Rick’s wives made them run, against their best instincts.
So how does a guy resolve that? He doesn’t give it all he is capable of.

It’s revelatory that Anita Perry is barefaced about her and hubby’s inate “feelings.” I love the part where Anita whined——then broke down and cried.
The Perry’s are the face of the “take no responsibility crowd”-—usually lurking in liberal circles.
Blaming Perry’s disintegration on everyone else but Perry is noteworthy.
Perry’s poor debate performances, his slapping down those who disagree with him, his sucking up to illegals with tax dollars-——his camaraderie with Islam, La Raza and Mexico......
We are supposed to forget all that.
Perry’s exalted opinion of himself —— repeated over and over——is all that matters to these two whiners.

She's trying to rally Christians to Perry, and rintense had it right: As I said to another freeper, its always 24-48 hours post debate to do damage control.
I don't think it'll work, but they are running out of things to do and trying to appeal to Christians might help him a slight bit. All that money backing Perry hasn't helped him in the polls one bit and all that money didn't help him in the debate the other night.

And now there is the ad produced by an arm of the TPE that attempts to compare his struggle in Texas to that of Walker in Wisconsin. Lots of opportunity for blow back there as well.

I thought your post was meant to be ironic!
This is a pr disaster, take my word for it.
She’s behaving like Angela Lansbury in the Manchurian Candidate!

What else do they have left? If Perry was polling a lot higher, it would be dumb as hell for Anita to bash anybody within the GOP over religion.
But they got nothing! $17 million can't buy you poll numbers, can't buy you a debate performance that wins you followers. They are running out of time, because low poll numbers ain't going to fill your campaign coffers.

>>God wants Rick Perry to be the president. Anyone who says otherwise is heartless.<<
I remember not a few here at FR vilifying Palin and her supporters for even insinuating that she may have been called of God. We will here from them shortly Im sure. Crickets.

Looking through the news on TV, it’s getting a lot of national media attention.
To: Liz
Well the behavior of his wife doesn’t exactly fair well for a potential first being composed.... But at this juncture they both see the numbers for Perry have fallen substantially, and politicians do have huge egos, so I suspect this is part of licking their wounds until the next round.
Still you never can tell how things will pan out at this juncture in the election cycle. Cain’s the new man of the hour and like Perry risen to the top....but very interesting is to see Newts popularity rising...and that at a slow yet steady pace. I have a sense he’s going to rise higher but likely not with all the drama displayed as we’ve seen thus far.

People need to calm down with the down and dirty attacks on Perry.
I would prefer to see Newt with all his imperfections win just because I think he can articulate to the people the things that need changed in order to get this country back in the business of making money but if Perry is the candidate I will support him.

After watching some of the coverage tonight, I definitely agree with you that it's bad for her to criticize Republicans and a lot of things she said in general, but the timing today with her husband deliberately reviving a two week old issue that was dead last week, and just two days after the debate, is too much of a coincidence. They are definitely trying to shift the blame for his numbers to anybody but him.
