Rick Perry gave a preview of his tax plan to the Western Leadership Conference in Las Vegas Wednesday ahead of its official unveiling next week.
Perry said his plan will center on a complete overhaul of the tax code - a move he says will create jobs and jumpstart economic growth.
"It starts with scrapping the three million words of the current tax code, and starting over with something much simpler: a flat tax," Perry said.
In his remarks, Perry took a dig a Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who came under fire in 2009 for failing to pay self-employment taxes while working for the International Monetary Fund.
"I want to make the tax code so simple that even Timothy Geithner can file his taxes on time," Perry said.
Perry's speech did not elaborate on the specifics of the proposed flat tax, leaving that instead to his speech next week in South Carolina.
But he did offer some broad strokes about other elements of his plan, including an initiative to increase American energy production, and cutting down on Congressional earmarks.
"But let me be even more clear: my plan ends earmarks for good," Perry said. "It's time to bring tough medicine to Washington. No longer will policy be set by K Street, it will be dictated by Main Street."
Perry also touched on a notion that has been popular on the GOP campaign trail: cutting back on government regulations.

So once again, Herman Cain said what he was FOR while everybody else was just saying what they were against, and now we’re finally hearing what the others are for.
?????...before the month is over,Perry will announce while President, if elected, he will personally stand guard at the border to help stem the flow of illegals.....
I am sorry, but I think it’s too little too late. Nothing can turn this around for Perry as long as he clings to his position on instate tuition for illegals.
He could maybe sqeak by with debate performances like the last one, but he is persona non grata to conservatives as long as he continues to support the tuition brake for illegal aliens. He either caves or it’s over.
And I was just about to skip the next debate in favor of the Comedy Hour.....but this is just going to be too good to miss.
Flat tax is a great idea.
May be coming too late for Perry.
Better if proposed 2 months ago.
That toothpaste just won't go back in the tube for me......just call me heartless!
“a move he says will create jobs”
No no core values, no leadership, broken moral compass.
Based to the way he, the Lt. Gov and Speaker of the House picked winners and losers in Texas, he has a lot of nerve talking about financial favors. About like him hitting Romney over lawn help. Flaming hypocrite needs to get the log out of his eye...
True, many people would be like you, but many people obviously have no problem with flip flopping judging by Romney’s support.
The problem is, if he doesn’t flip, everytime he starts to make some points on Romney, Romney will simply bring the tuition issue back up.
Whatever Perry tries to do to mollify conservatives will not mitigate his checkered past (demrat, Gore shill and global warming shill). Nor will it mitigate his appalling illegal immigration stance and his signing hate speech legislation into law.
Therefore, I give this press release a firm tripple yawn.
This is typical Perry. He has no original ideas of his own, and is nothing but a career politician with no principles, but thinks that he can climb on the Tea Party bandwagon by adopting conservative ideas which have been circulating in the movement literally for decades.
This plastic hair Ken, like the other plastic hair Ken, can sit down, shut up, and go HOME!
GREAT! Let us see the details.
If you go to the article, you'll see that besides the flat tax plan, he also proposed giving in-state tuition rates at Texas colleges to residents of Iowa and New Hampshie.
I do think this is great.
The center of the campaign is now tax reform (thank you Heman Cain, for this if nothing else).
The more this gets debated, the more likely is is to be enacted by whoever gets elected.
Seek here is an article from an old Navy buddy of mine retired Super Chief, lives in Dallas. Have fun.
Perry...??? The guy is not ready for prime time. He’s a West Texas hick that staggered through A&M and had the good fortune to be the Lt. Gov. when Bush resigned to head for the White House. He is a hero around here because most of the voters here are as stupid as he is. A lot of folks here like him because he talks like us and he totes a pistol, also like us.
Texas is a funny place, politically. The real power is not in the Governor’s mansion... It’s with the leaders in the legislature. So, the Gov. can sleep through a couple of terms and get the credit if things go well.
Another thing about Perry is that he considers himself a Texan first and a Republican second; also trait of a lot of pols here. Remember he was a Democrat before he was a Republican but if you ask him, his political philosophy has not changed. This state is full of Democrats who don’t believe in gun control, abortion, welfare or anything else the Dems espouse. They vote Democrat because, “My daddy was a Democrat, his daddy was a Democrat and I’m a Democrat! They are for the small man!” Even now with a Republican majority in most of Texas it’s hard to get anyone to admit that they are a Republican.
He has no business running for anything outside Texas. At any rate, after his recent debate performances his run should be just about over. He is getting a few pats on the back for shouting back at Romney but his grasp of national issues is lacking and folks will soon figure that out. He should be back home where he belongs pretty soon. We don’t have a prayer of electing another Texan, thanks to George Bush.
What’s that old saying about the big fish in a small pond?
