Why won't Mitt Romney make his tax returns public?
CSM ^ | 10/26/11 | David Grant

Posted on 10/26/2011 10:35:46 AM PDT by freespirited

Rick Perry wants Mitt Romney to cough up his form 1040s (that’s the US individual tax return document). The Romney camp demurred, saying they would consider doing so next year. (Remarkably, Romney has NEVER released, even during his governorship of Massachusetts.)

Why won’t Romney do it? Speculation, from liberal group ThinkProgress and others, is that Romney pays a way lower tax rate than many Americans because of his extensive financial investments, from which income is typically taxed below that of regular income. One left-leaning analyst speculates Romney paid an effective tax rate as low as 14 percent on his $6.6 million to $40 million in income. (The range is so wide because of the imprecise nature of Romney’s very limited disclosures.)

To put that in perspective: In 2011, a married couple filing together would have to make under $69,000 to have their top tax rate be 15 percent. Uber-rich Warren Buffett says he pays 17 percent in taxes....

if predictions about Mitt Romney’s tax situation are true, he would have to go in front of ordinary Americans at every debate, town hall and rope line saying he was looking out for their interests while paying a vastly lower amount of his substantial wealth in taxes.

Perry - who paid 23.4 percent of his 2010 income of a bit north of $200,000 to the federal government - is no doubt hoping Romney’s tax return would write the attack lines for him.

“What say you?”

I say that’s one I hadn’t even thought of!

All I know is any gazillionaire lawyer-politician pushing 70 has a lot to hide, and there’s no way he can win the general election in this political an economic climate.

So it’s OK if his company can profit off the sale of the land .

Sure. Why shouldn't it be OK for people to profit from the sale of land?

I said they should be reviewed by an independent auditor, and an opinion rendered regarding the completeness and legality of their taxes. The actual details of everyone’s financial lives, if legal, are nobody else’s business.

Likewise, a candidate’s medical history should be private, excepting that each candidate should get a report by an independent physician, with that doctor’s opinion about their fitness for office. If there are any specific concerns (like Cheney had with his heart condition) it is OK to discuss that, but the whole details of the whole medical history are nobody else’s business.

The CSM should be dogging Obama about unreleased information.

We know that there have long been rumors of dual standards concerning compliance with the Word of Wisdom, the Witness, and the Law of Tithing for prominent LDS members ... one set of rules for the Chiefs and another for the Indians if you will.

“The actual details of everyone’s financial lives, if legal, are nobody else’s business.”

The Federal income tax return does not necessarily provide all the actual details of everyone’s financial lives.

What makes you think the democrat opposition does not already have Mitt’s tax returns and the details of his financial life, ready to use it to destroy any chance we have of dislodging the democrats from the executive branch?

Medical records are not a part of our discussion. You just put that there to distract from the point.

I suppose the opposition does have stuff like that. That doesn’t make it right.

And no, I put it in there to draw a comparison about personal information.

It is possible that you are on to something here. If Mitt Romney is given a temple recommend despite not being qualified for failing to fully tithe, it will be embarassing to someone.

I'm not Mormon so I don't know how the temple recommend process works precisely. Is the candidate just asked if he is a full tither or does he have to provide documentation? If the candidate is just asked and Romney isn't qualified for the privileges he received, then two possibilities jump to the forefront. One, Mitt was not truthful in his response. Two, Mitt was truthful and the LDS "Church" or its representative bent the rules for Mitt. Either way it is embarassing for Mitt. In the former case, it just another example of his problem with the truth. In the latter case, Mitt is going to have a hard time convincing people that he didn't know that he was receiving favored treatment.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the legalism of the LDS "Church" undermined the candidancy of its first serious Presidential candidate?

I don't care who the candidate is, I'm sorry showing tax returns ever became part of the political fabric.

It's no one's damn business what anyone else makes or pays in a free society.

Yes the Mormon hierarchy is very much like the OWS

These rules for thee but not for me

While the common peons in Mormonism have to be taxed errr pay union dues errr pay club dues errr tithe 10% to buy their way into the mormon after life errr prove their worthiness or something...

The top 1% of Club Mormonism members get great beenies like free housing, free meals, free trips, free travel, etc and discounted or no yearly dues, temple recommends with no interview...

If bishop Romney has too show his tax returns the “faithful” will get to see that because of his

“royal” Mormon family
family name
political ambitions
proximity to the “white horse throne”

He doesnt have to cough up errr give the required 10% plus that the 99 percenters do...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

An OTS might be needful

Occupy Temple Square...

I’m quite sure that Mitt is taking the charitable deduction on his income tax...he probably doesn’t want anyone to know of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that are going into mormon church coffers....or perhaps he isn’t paying the required 10%?

As much as I abhor Mitt Romney, this “release your income tax records” stuff is a nuisance that detracts from platforms, open examination of leglislative records, and intentions for the new position from being front and center.

The only thing I want to know is if he’s current on his taxes. There are literally DOZENS of MILLIONS of Americans that do not pay any income taxes at all. Should we call for their records too?

Mitt Romney has been running for public office for 6 years. In the mean time he has had no visible means of support. So how does he do it? Inquiring minds want to know!

NO visible means of support. Hmm... (No wonder he had to put his dog on his station wagon roof during a vacation)

I’m sure it ranges from some BIG things — like 10% going into the coffers of the Mormon church...to SMALL things...

(Who knows? Mitt probably gets a “bonus” as a Marriott Board of Director for each porn movie rental purchased by guests...wants to avoid disclosing “other Marriott income” beyond the annual $25,000 & stocks from the porn-industrious Marriott)

Highly unusal for a presidential candidate NOT to release his tax returns. Americans deserve to know where the potential commander in chief makes his money. Everyone sure wants to know about Newts income...Romney is hiding something.
Serving as president is not the equivalent of working at Walmart...he is representing every citizen in this nation...should lay all his cards on the table. I am sick of Mittens getting a free pass.
