There's Something Very Weird About The Herman Cain Sexual Harassment Scandal
Business Insider ^ | 11/04/2011 | Grace Wyler

Posted on 11/04/2011 6:45:59 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The Republican race has officially been hijacked by the Herman Cain sexual harassment controversy, and the furor shows no signs of dying down. Everyone in Washington is now trying to decide whether Cain is more like Clarence Thomas or Bill Clinton. Or maybe even Anthony Weiner.

But the media firestorm has overlooked one key fact: We still don't know what Cain actually did.

New details emerged Thursday night about the two unnamed women who Politico originally reported had accused Cain of making "sexually suggestive" remarks and "improper" gestures toward them while they were employees at the National Restaurant Association sometime in the 1990s. The new reports provide some clarity to the scandal, mostly by providing information that differentiates the two original accusers:

According to both stories, one of the women was paid a $35,000 termination settlement after Cain made "unwanted sexual advances" at an NRA event in a hotel, apparently after a night of heavy drinking. The NYT reports that Cain asked the woman to come up to his hotel room, and made repeated advances even after she declined.

Politico reports that the second woman reached a $45,000 termination agreement with the NRA to settle harassment claims against Cain. She is the same woman Cain was referring to when he recalled that employee had "falsely" accused him of sexual harassment after he "made a gesture saying" she was the same height as his wife. She is also the same woman who has requested to release an anonymous statement through the NRA that would "counter" Cain's statements, while leaving out the details of the incident.

But in the end, the new revelations raise more questions than they answer. In fact, the Cain harassment story has actually gotten more vague and confusing as new details and allegations emerge.

I hope you’re right, Ron. I really do. I want Cain to win this thing. I don’t see anyone else on our side who I like better.

But I’m worried about his missteps. The fact that those missteps aren’t yet backfiring doesn’t fill me with a lot of confidence.

I’m sorry.

And it’s not quarterbacking. It’s called having an opinion. Is that permissible, or are we only allowed to cheer and applaud?

So you agree Cain has been maliciously and unfairly attacked with bogus claims, yet all you can muster is “he should have handled it better”? Good don’t vote for him. Maybe we’ll get lucky and get a scumbag candidate who is good at covering up real crimes.

“Curious that the supermarket tabloids haven’t paid any attention to this story.”

It appears that the supermarket tabloids have higher journalistic standards than Politico, NY Times, Washington Post, etc...

Huh. Who knew???

"sexually suggestive" remarks and "improper" gestures......Cain made "unwanted sexual advances"....apparently after a night of heavy drinking.

Just love how the story keeps evolving, no bias here.

I’m not advocating voting for anyone other than Cain.

Am I not allowed to criticize his campaign?

Is there only room for cheers and applause on a political discussion website?

I want Cain to win.

I fear that he won’t.

His actions as a candidate have me worried, even though the results, so far, are looking good.

Nice try but absurd nonsense.

What we are talking about is a sleazy attempt to slander and destroy a leading Conservative candidate. There is NO evidence that Cain did ANYTHING. Your assumption of guilty based on nothing but accusation is utter nonsense.

I accuse you of being a paid Romney campaign staffer pimping a paid for Romney smear against Cain

Prove me wrong

Ah but that right YOU demand a presumption of innocence. Odd how you are arrogantly refusing to grant Cain that same basic right.

So quit assuming the slanders true and provide even a single shred of evidence to back up the anonymous sourced accusations.

I think this is about the 4th story I've read about this, and each one has different versions of what the was said and done. Reminds me of the game we used to play as kids. You whisper a phrase to the one next to you, they pass it on, and then you see how much it changed by the end of the line.

You are allowed to criticize anything. An everyone is allowed to question why you spam every thread with the same comments while refusing to listen to anyone who point out the errors in your criticism.

Let’s move on to serious people who can win the office. This is a major distraction and it is time to move on.

I agree completely. On with Cain! Forget this hatchet job. The hell with Perry, Romney, Rove, and all the other RINOs. Let's vote in the one true conservative outsider from Washington. YEEEEEHAWWWWWW!

Smear all the way . . . but who is behind this: The D’s or the R’s?

With that said I am happy to see the MSM handle this charge just like they jumped on the Edwards affair, Clinton bimbos and Obama’s history. Oh, wait . . . I guess they missed the memo when the name has a (D) behind it.

s/off

Yep...there is indeed something weird going on with this story. I have a “weird” theory: Cain had his people get this story to Politico.

I know, it sounds a bit wacky...But play along with me. Cain is a smart guy. I don't think a lot of people realize just how smart he is. If you were Cain and wanted to win...had very little $$$, little name recognition, no govt experience...you would have to come up with SOMETHING to get into the public consciousness. So, Cain...knowing that those incidents of sexual harassment WOULD come out....and knowing that he did nothing wrong...in fact that the 2 women look to be slime-balls (just guessing on my part)...and KNEW that MSM and the Dems would jump ALL OVER THIS....

Well, look who's in the news? Cain. Look who is ahead in the polls? Cain. Look who is getting $$$ donations every day? Cain.

He's a smart guy...I think he's a lot smarter than given credit for.

Well, just my theory. I kind of like it!

You keep repeating Rumor, hearsay and accusation are NOT evidence.Yet your candidate seems to be doing the same.

Cain himself says that although he can't prove it, racism probably played a role in whoever spread these stories about him.

Herman Cain is defending himself anew and -- without evidence -- blaming presidential rival Rick Perry's campaign of being behind the disclosure of years-old sexual harassment allegations against him.

So you're content that your candidate seems to be advancing rumor, hearsay and accusation without evidence?

Perry is worthless. But unless Cain can give cold hard facts to either the racism claim or the Perry claim, he's just as guilty as what he's accusing others of.

The guy looks like toast right now. Serious charges and it appears wide spread.

And you don't think this isn't going to happen to the next front runner?

We appreciate you concern but you can keep it.

Confidentiality agreements go both ways.

The NRA can’t release the info without the permission of the woman. The woman can’t release the info without the permission of the NRA.

Cain has no controll over either one. Apparently, Cain doesn’t even know what is actually in the agreement, and nobody legally can even tell him.

At the moment, who knows what either the women or the NRA wants to do. I’m not sure there even is a way to “get it out in the open”.
