Is GOP missing chance to grow? (Hispanic vote)

...“You would be surprised at how many Republican Latinos there actually are in the state of Nevada. There are quite a few of us,” said Alex Garza, a Hispanic Republican activist. “I think the numbers are there; we just haven’t organized as well as the Democratic Latino organizations.”

The potential political power of Latinos is an oft-told story in Nevada and elsewhere, though any happy ending at the polls usually is enjoyed by Democrats.

...During the Republican presidential candidates’ nationally televised debate in Las Vegas last month, they were asked how they would speak to the Latino community. Newt Gingrich suggested that Latinos didn’t need to be singled out as any different from any other ethnic group. But Rick Santorum suggested Latinos should naturally gravitate toward the Republican Party because of shared faith-based values.

That message resonates with some Latinos.

“The Republican Party has very, very strong family values ... Latino families in general believe in the family values as well,” said Jose Hernandez, an accountant who serves as a youth pastor at his evangelical church with a mostly Latino group of 18- to 30-year-olds he counsels.

“My youth that I teach, obviously I’m teaching them Biblical principles and stuff, but then outside, I introduce them to the subject ... and by doing that I’m actually getting people to start coming around and thinking that the Republican agenda actually has better options than President Obama and the Senate,” he said. “If they’re learning good Christian values, they will vote Republican.”

Catching the youth is key any effort to gain support in the community. Nationwide, every month, 50,000 Latinos turn 18 and become eligible to vote.

Cantu and Garza say the party is working on it but could use funding and assistance from the greater Nevada GOP...

I'm sure that Obama didn't say these things to La Raza:

Gov Rick Perry spoke to LaRaza about the drug cartels, shared responsibility of border security and that it is Washington's responsibility to secure the border -- that the Federal government should support the military, deliver the mail and secure the border -- and they aren't doing their job. [HE RECEIVED a lot of applause] He spoke of the money Texas spends securing the border, that it must be sealed and then we can sustain legitimate commerce...He told about protecting the sanctity of the vote and strengthening our shared values, family, faith, hard work -- they are TEXAS values and we should unite as citizen's of one Nation under God and concentrate on what unites us. He told his Cuervo joke and they found it funny unlike the Liberal Latino Leaders Give Perry Lukewarm Response (or more likely they'd heard it before)

Nov. 18, 2011:

NEW YORK—Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry says President Barack Obama and his administration are responsible for policies that have endangered agents patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Texas governor made his remarks while picking up an award from the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation.

Perry said lack of funding and “bureaucratic bungling” in Washington have made the border less safe.

He singled out one program in particular, Operation Fast and Furious. The arms-trafficking probe run by the Justice Department allowed AK-47s and other weapons to leak into the black market.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2809552/posts

“To say that the border is safer than ever is to turn a blind eye to the very real dangers of federal and state law enforcement,” Perry said. “Even worse he sweeps aside the fact there is bureaucratic bungling that has made the border substantially more dangerous. Through the ill-conceived operation know as “fast and furious,” for instance, our own federal government provided more than 2,000 firearms to some of the most dangerous criminals in North America, many of which are still unaccounted for. Federal law enforcement officials deserve an attorney general who displays the same courage and sense of responsibility with which they serve. And America deserves a president and a Congress willing to give law enforcement officials the support they need to truly support our border.”

http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/89626/perry-at-law-enforcement-lunch-blasts-the-border/

...”Perry, who was at the Waldorf Astoria event to receive the group’s State Service Award, often laments the dangers presented by drug cartels and describes parts of the border as “a war zone.”

On Friday, he reiterated that sentiment, saying, “Mexican drug cartels are a clear and present danger to America.”

Perry got an enthusiastic reception for his proposals for smaller government and for his assertion that members of Congress who use privileged information in stock dealings should be treated like criminals.

“Any congressman or senator who’s used their insider knowledge to trade, to make money in the stock market oughta go to jail, period,” he said to applause.”

NRO: “Perry Criticizes Administration Over Fast and Furious”

....”Perry pledged that if elected, he would increase by thousands the number of border patrol agents on the border, and use “aviation assets” to provide real-time information to those on the ground. “We must secure that border,” he emphasized.

Perry also touted his new “Uproot and Overhaul Washington” plan, particularly its elimination of lifetime terms for Supreme Court justices and its plank to cut congressional members’ pay in half and push for a part-time Congress. “In our home state, our legislature meets for 140 days, every other year,” he argued, noting that if a nation, Texas would be the world’s 13th largest economy.”...

Wow! I know that Sharron Angle lost the Latino vote in Nevada, in part, by telling a large group of Latino youth “You look Asian to me.” If the GOP does not make a concerted effort to reach the Latino community, which does have some basic Conservative values, we will be the minority party from here to eternity.

I know how to reach the Latino vote.

Let’s build a wall between United States and Mexico.

That’ll do it.

The article mentions the Sharon Angle comment (probably why she lost).

Gov. Rick Perry is calling for a conservative ascendancy and it is directed to ALL American voters. If the Dems get this block they will win in 2012 and then that will be all she wrote for the U.S.A. If the Dems can pull in enough American Hispanic voters - teach them to be dependent and anti-conservative/anti-free-market capitalists - they will own them like they own the black vote.

And for the "LaRa Rick" crowd, it took Gov. Perry 6 years to get PHOTO-voter ID in Texas but he did it.

And check out these numbers:

...”Perry then played to the crowd as best he could, and mentioned the Latinos he’s appointed to office, including Secretary of State Esperanza “Hope” Andrade, Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Director José Cuevas.

“That is the right job for that man,” Perry said in reference to Cuevas’ name. The comment drew some light chuckles.”.....

Many people have remarked on the interview linked below.

The man Rick Perry appointed Texas Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson -- a good example of the caliber and character of leaders Gov. Perry surrounds himself with – unlike Obama who appoints and defends appointments such as U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

The GOP will never get a majority vote. GW Bush sold us out completely for a short term gain at a massive long term loss. He flooded the nation with immigrants for cheap labor for his buddies, and leaving us with people who will vote Democrat for the next 50 years.

Remember 2010.

2012 will be ours (WH, House of Rep, Senate, State Houses, Governors) if we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot.

The “Hispanic vote”, like Hispanic people, are a lot more diverse than the “media” would have you believe. They are at least a vote that CAN be gained, unlike the blacks where any non-Dem is istantly marginalized/lynched by the bought-and-paid-for leadership. While blacks continue to live on handouts from the white Dem masters, some Hispanics are moving into the middle class and voting accordingly. They are also more family-oriented - Hispanic Dems in NY prevented Governor Paterson from passing “gay marriage” a few years back. Some Hispanics are permanent wards of the welfare state, while others are hard-working capitalists; they allow “diversity”, and aren’t owned by a few high-profile house slaves as the blacks are.

The most significant factor often ignored is the tension between blacks and Hispanics; they are hardly a “unified coalition of color”.

30 million illegals create nearly 50 congressional districts by their mere presence. (Census counts) We can talk a big game about shrinking government but it doesn’t mean much if we increase the numbers of democrat voters.

The fact is that the hispanic vote is no more monolithic than the white vote. There are plenty of American hispanics that will vote republican anyway and going out of our way to pander doesn’t impress them.

I suggest the forum read the article and not believe your comment. It seems you, like a few other who have just flocked to this thread, want to drive conservatives to the Democratic Party ballot. Interesting.

Rubio holds the same position as Perry.

GOP Hispanics will not turn out for Romney:

That's -- I'm running for office, for Pete's sake, I can't have illegals. [video clip] -- Mitt Romney, GOP presidential debate - October 18, 2011 - Las Vegas, NV

Rudy Giuliani asked Mitt Romney the same question in the 2008 CNN debate that Rick Perry asked him during the CNN 2011 debate -- Mitt lost it both times.

Nov 28, 2008 CNN-YouTube Debate: Sound familiar? [LOOK who interrupts whom!!]

Funny Accent Mitt Romney, discussing reports illegal immigrants did landscaping at his home: It would "not be American" to check workers' papers simply because they have a "funny accent." [acknowledges need for giving health care and education to illegals]

Sound familiar? Mike Huckabee, replying to Romney's criticism of providing college scholarships to children of illegal immigrants: "In all due respect, we are a better country than to punish children for what their parents did."

At the same debate: John McCain: "We must recognize these are God's children as well. ... I will enforce the borders first. But we won't demagogue it." June 13, 2011 –CNN Debate:

GINGRICH: “No, but let me say this, John. No serious citizen who's concerned about solving this problem should get trapped into a yes/no answer in which you're either for totally selling out protecting America or you're for totally kicking out 20 million people in a heartless way. There are -- there are humane, practical steps to solve this problem, if we can get the politicians and the news media to just deal with it honestly.”
