Cain Wants Illegal Immigration Issue Shifted to States
The Corner / The National Review ^ | 11-27-2011 | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 11/27/2011 6:51:43 PM PST by TitansAFC

Herman Cain indicated today that he does not agree with Newt Gingrich’s position on immigration.

“The way I would deal with those that are already here, which has been my stated position: empower the states to deal with the illegals that are already here, not some, big, grandiose, national one size fit-all. I believe that the states should be empowered to deal with the illegals that are already here,” Cain said CNN’s State of the Union this morning.

In response to whether that meant the states could allow illegal immigrants to “be put on a path toward legalization and toward citizenship,” Cain answered, “It would be up to the states as long as they did not break the federal law.”

But when Crowley used the word “amnesty,” inquiring if that it meant it would be “okay” if the states granted “some sort of amnesty to those who are already living here,” Cain vehemently denied he supported amnesty.

“I’m not saying that at all,” he said

“Secure the border for real,” Cain continued, speaking about what his plan regarding illegal immigrants is. “Promote the path to citizenship that’s already there, and the path to citizenship that’s already there doesn’t say anything about amnesty. Thirdly, enforce the laws that are already there, but make it easier for companies to be able to enforce the laws. And fourth, empower the states. Don’t give the states any special things to do, just empower them to do within the law what the federal government is not doing.”

Nor is this stuff lost on the Democrats.

This will be Saturday Night Live, Leno, Letterman, debate questions, and it will come to define Herman Cain.

“Mr Cain, the Constitution says that Congress is in charge of naturalization, but you are calling for states to have authority to grant citizenship and immigration status. Would you like to explain to the American people if it would have been better to propose amending the Constitution before you announced this plan?”

At least Cain isn’t recommending a local board comprised of a member of LaRaza, Joe - the owner of Joe’s Lawn Care, an ACLU member and the local Unitarian minister.

Ah, but the week’s still young..who knows what Cain will say next. No one.

Not even Cain.

Morgan did with abortion and adoption vs. keeping the child in the family.

I am so sick of this canard, although you've added an even more dishonest twist with your "splice the anwers to two different questions together again". Piers didn't do ANYTHING of the kind. Nobody misquoted Cain in that interview, they were all Cain's words.

And it had NOTHING to do with adoption. Cain explained exactly what he THOUGHT Morgan was asking, and what he was answering, and it had nothing to do with adoption.

On the other hand, it is always a good idea to try to get the transcript, because it COULD be a partial quote in this particular article.

Of course, this answer does SOUND like Cain, who often punts the hard questions by claiming he'd leave it to the states, even when that makes no sense.

” Opinions, opinions. He correctly identified the pathway to citizenship he talks about is the one that currently exists as law. Why create something new when we already have the laws, that are not being enforced, to be enforced.....” <<<

No one is arguing against enforcement of current law. Not Perry, not Newt, not Bachman, not Romney and not Cain. What Cain SAID..... was a complaint about the nomenclature! His own term was not to be referred to as “amnesty”, but “ selective something-or-other”. I forget what he called it, but it was a rhumba version of EXACTLY what Perry laid on the table. Nuff said.

It's amazing how Herm Cain has turned some good people into liberals. Sheriff Joe, Monica Crowley, me and anyone else that sees right thru him. Oh I forgot, today I am also a racist. Cain doesn't need a new job, he is already a very powerful man.

That’s a great video. I love the security guard / police officer in the background who is listening to Cain’s every word. And when Cain is done talking, the security guard is nodding in agreement with what Cain said.

If you read the ruling, the court says that deportation was an option and that it was legal to deport the individual instead of giving them free education, but if they were allowed stay the had the right to be educated. They point to decanas v. Baca, if is important to point out, there was no decent in decana v. Baca. The odds of it getting over turned is slim to none.

First, I doubt Cain actually meant citizenship — he just says things without thinking, and without understanding what he means until later.

Still locals or states, you can’t have people’s legal residence in the country decided on a piece-meal basis by extra-legal panels. Gingrich’s plan is absurd — you can’t tell an illegal they are deported in one town, and can work in another town. And you can’t have each state deciding whether an immigrant is allowed to work in the state or not.

Either the immigrant is legal or illegal. If they are illegal, they need to be deported, we can’t have sanctuary states like Cain seems to be setting up. If they are legal, you can’t discriminate against them on a state-by-state basis, treating them as 2nd-class citizens because legal residents are protected by the 14th amendment.

That does not excuse the fact that Cain is okay with millions of illegals getting amnesty if some states decide it.

What are you talking about? You are the one who posted the specific snips from the article, and you personally snipped this one, which says he is NOT for amnesty. Do you not know how to read your own snips??

But when Crowley used the word “amnesty,” inquiring if that it meant it would be “okay” if the states granted “some sort of amnesty to those who are already living here,” Cain vehemently denied he supported amnesty.

“I’m not saying that at all,” he said.

When Democrat Harry Truman made the phrase “the buck stops here” famous, who would have imagined that we’d have our own Republican presidential candidate decades later practicing “passing the buck” whenever the questions get a little too tough for him to handle? Whether the issue is foreign affairs and he tries to get by with “I will discuss the options with my generals and listen to them” and “depending on priorities” or the issue is immigration and he resorts to and “let the states decide,” the end result is that Cain can't seem to put together a thoughtful, coherent answer that doesn't 'pass the buck!'

Seeing Cain embracing passing the buck even before winning the GOP nomination is a sure sign of weakness, and it is a strategy doomed to fail. In Cain’s world, it’s OK to have bureaucrats decide - state by state - whether to deport people or allow them to remain stateside ("amnesty," or whatever word he prefers to use).

And even if adopted, 50 states with 50 individual bureaucratic systems giving inconsistent decisions invites a legal nightmare. Welcome to endless lawsuits making all sorts of claims based on equal protection. The buck sure didn't stop here!

“Unlike Newt who can’t wait to create more laws that will never be enforced.”

And Newt is fully aware of that. He has been totally supportive of illegal aliens and has worked for the past 25 years to ensure that the country’s immigration laws won’t be enforced.

Wrong numb brain, he can order them, the illegals not to be released and who appoints immigration judges.
