CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich told a South Carolina town hall on Monday that as president he would block federal funds to any city that "declared itself a sanctuary" for illegal immigrants.
Gingrich, fresh from a key endorsement from an influential New Hampshire newspaper, is on a three-day swing through South Carolina, an early primary state that his campaign has dubbed his "southern firewall."
"No American president has the right to side with foreigners," Gingrich told a crowd of hundreds at the College of Charleston, after reciting a list of 16 countries that he said had filed friend of the court briefs in a Justice Department lawsuit against South Carolina's new immigration law.
The law, which goes into effect on January 1 barring an injunction from a federal court, requires police officers to check the immigration status of anyone they stop or detain for another reason and makes it a felony to knowingly transport or harbor undocumented immigrants.

Newt, you are out to lunch on spending a dime on the US/Mexico Border.
The problem is not the 2000 mile border, but the lack of hostility to illegal aliens once they cross the border.

So it looks like the foreigner in the White House will protect illegal foreigners by January 1, 2012. Big deal.
NOTHING is stopping legal residents from performing CITIZENS ARRESTS on anyone they choose to racially profile.
BTW, they would only be enforcing the existing laws that make it a Federal Crime to be in the USA illegally. Sort of a Mexican-go-home “Southern Firewall” program.
A lot of illegals left family in Mexico or elsewhere so don’t even give me that crap about breaking up families. As for the knife wound sure treat true emergencies, but ONLY true emergencies. Life and death emergencies.
I’m well aware that most are getting paid under the table. Those hiring them and paying them under the table should be heavily fined. I think I mentioned heavily fining all that hire illegals in my previous post and that means ALL, not just corporations but private individuals as well.
Forget about sanctuary cities, we have become a sanctuary country.
Thats wishful thinking, you will still need to deport them.
However, it is a big FIRST step, and that your right on. Never the less, full deportation will be needed, many of these folks will join gangs and rob and steal and commit crimes. This whole "peaceful illegal doing the work americans won't do" is bull, alot of them are hardcore gangbangers.
Deportation plus what you have stated, are not even the whole bag, you'll still need heave enforcement at the border, and serious penalities for those who hire illegals and pay them off the books (honestly, many illegals now are off the books, which is why programs like e-verify have holes in them).
Not without going through Ricardo’s cold, dead body. He’ll never let his precious illegals be discriminated against by heartless Americans.
The wealthy growers prefer Guatemalans over Mexicans to work on their plantations, where they raise mangos, bananas, coffee, and dozens of other crops in the fertile, steamy ambiance of southern Chiapas. Echoing U.S. employers claims about Americans, these finqueros insist that Mexicans will not do the hard work of planting, cultivating, and picking.
Sound familiar???
Many already belong to gangs and or rob, steal and commit crimes.
No one is perfect. No one. Not a single one of us has led a completely blameless life. We've all said something that we wish we hadn't. We've all lied, cheated, or stolen. We've all done or said hurtful things. Imperfection is a reality of the human condition. We know and accept that we are flawed. We realize that our parents, brothers, sisters, friends, and neighbors are flawed. If we accept this as true, why do we expect more from our potential elected leaders?
Every day, you can turn on the cable news, or go to your favorite news or blog sites, and hear all about the Republican presidential candidates and how imperfect they are. We all know about the sexual harassment allegations against Herman Cain. Most agree that these charges have probably been completely fabricated. That being the case, we are then subjected to constant criticism of his campaign's handling of these allegations. Now we get to hear all about his flubbing of a question on Libya. The mainstream media has force-fed us clips of Rick Perry having a bit of a brain freeze during a debate. We know all about Newt Gingrich's past marital problems. He appeared in an ad with Nancy Pelosi, and he's criticized Congressman Paul Ryan. We hear these attacks daily from both sides of the aisle. These stories are designed to convince us of something that we should already know: no one is perfect!
The media is setting us up. They're lying to us. The lie is this: we must have a perfect candidate to defeat Barack Obama in 2012. Conservatives more and more seem to buy into the lie. They buy into it and get discouraged. They don't see any of our candidates as perfect, and they see Barack Obama's re-election as inevitable. If the progressives can get enough of us to believe that the defeat of conservatism in 2012 is a foregone conclusion, they can keep us home on November 6. What many American conservatives need is a good, cold splash of reality.
I know Newt's got baggage and he has a long history in DC but in this case, IMHO, that's a net plus as to how this might play out. He's a really good politician and so perhaps I'm becoming jaded and cynical in my old age, but it seems to me that you just cannot get around the NWO system that is in place handicapping the races. The Council on Foreign Relations keeps this process locked up. Newt's an old time member there and for that reason alone, in the past I'd never consider him as a possibility on the #1 or #2 spot. Now I would consider him a viable candidate for either. I'd pay money to watch him eviscerate Obozo in a debate. Remember something: Ronald Reagan was not a member of CFR. He was not a globalist. But he understood the reality of the system and while he did not dance to the tunes, he still knew all of the musicians! He knew that in order to get elected and push his agenda for the short term, he'd have to toe the CFR line for their long term agenda. Face it, you and I aren't going to stop this. "So it is written, so it shall be done." This process is going forward on a timetable finalized and controlled by the Lord. Period.
I'm very much afraid that while Cain is up to the task of leadership, the wiley coyotes that inhabit the Hill are just too implacable and deadly for a political neophyte. Hate to say it but those old dogs won't try that crap with Newt, because he is arguably the deadliest old Lobo of the bunch. Having been Speaker of the House virtually guarantees he won't fall into anybody's traps political or otherwise and that's what we need. His debate performances have been nothing short of brilliant (Cain, too) but more and more Newt just looks Presidential. In avoiding the obvious setups to rag on his fellow candidates as the MSM has set them up time and again, Newt comes off as the only "adult" in the room.
True, whats not being said, and I understand why, is that, for these types of criminals, deportation might not be best (in that we deport them, and they come back again), we might need prison for repeat offenders, those who commit crimes, and get deported and return, a few prison sentences, will serve as the ultimate deterrent......
Excellent post and you’re right, “ Newt comes off as the only “adult” in the room. “ I strongly believe that he is the man that we need right now.
Cheers......

Except that a man who will lie to his wife... er, wives... and violate the oath he took when he married, he will lie about anything and everything. Newt is a self-aggrandizing narcissist just like Obama. There is no “there” there.
Who cares what he says, when he cannot be trusted?
I challenge you, in full context, to show anywhere that Newt advocated amnesty. You may perceive it as such but your perceptions are misguided by your zeal to eradicate the entire problem with just one fell swoop. Just like all of the other problems the politicians have brought upon us, this one is going to take a while to undo as well and there is no silver bullet in the chamber ready to fire.
The closest thing is to do it in steps as he has proposed by starting with securing the border first, then, get the existing immigration laws back in favor of the legal immigrants and not a life support system for immigration attorneys. Only then for the ones who don't leave on their own accord, review each case with a kind of citizens tribunal to determine the veracity of getting those who have been productive and assimilated a temporary means of staying productive while they go to the back of the line to obtain citizenship. Those who do not pass the tribunal will be deported, period.
Do I care for Newt's big government ideas along with all of the other good ones? Not on your life and that is the primary reason I am a Cain supporter. Because he does not have the J Street alliances to pull at his judgement on what's best for this country.
And therein lies the problems with his proposal but he is not the sole arbiter of what will be come law. We also need a whole new crop of legislators as well.
Remember folks, we are electing a President, not a King! The real source of the laws we want lies directly in both houses of Congress so lets not accept blinders to the possibility of a Republican White House that has to deal with the likes of Boehnor and his mostly impotent gang.
We have a field set for the White House and constantly haranguing out one or the other will be a net loss if we also do not start doing the same for each state's representatives. I know multitasking can be an issue with some, but we also need to start ramping up our supporting needs to a new administration.
I know there are state forums here so lets start to use them the same way we are doing here to get the best possible team to wrest the helm away from the Establishment.
