Obama to Kansas to Evoke Teddy Roosevelt

OSAWATOMIE, KAN. -- President Obama will give an economic speech in Osawatomie, Kan., Tuesday at a location the White House says it was very specific in picking and was meant to stir echoes of President Teddy Roosevelt.

Roosevelt spoke in the very same town more than 100 years ago on Aug. 31, 1910, where he presented his vision for America and the coming 1912 election.

Sound familiar?

That's by design.

Roosevelt gave what was called a "New Nationalism" agenda, talking about regulation on special interests (even using that term), and calling out for welfare, human rights and a greater role for federal government.

At the time the remarks, given to more than 30,000 people, had a wide-range of reaction, even some calling them "Communist and "Socialist," according to the Kansas Historical Society.

Others lauded it as a great address.

"This New Nationalism regards the executive power as the steward of the public welfare," Roosevelt said.

Not meaning to digress but to poinr out Churchill who was around in TR’s time and emerged somewhat later also supported eugenics and “selective breeding”. Consider the times and background of TR. The Delano’s, and feudalist exploitation used by his peers like Carnegie,Rockefeller , Vanderbuilt.,and Pullman toward their employees. These people were ruthless.

Socialism/ Marxism did not rise out of conditions we have today but out of conditions which existed during that era.

Didn’t KS vote for Wilson in 1912? It may have switched to Hughes in 1916.

Very appropriate considering the fact that Teddy was a rabid progressive.

So true but largely forgotten. And he was followed by Woody Wilson, the ultimate progressive, sort of like an Obama with brains and knowledge.

They would have done lasting damage to the country but that had to wait until the ascension of FDR.

No, KS voted for Wilson both times (albeit with pluralities). 1912: Wilson-39%; TR-33%; Taft-21%; Debs-7%. 1916: Wilson-49.9%; Hughes-44%.
